EDGAR Bar & Kitchen at The Mayflower Hotel
With our welcoming patio, open-air dining room and upbeat sidewalk bar, we pride ourselves as much on the quality of our products as our vibrant atmosphere. An in-house meat cellar showcases an artisan charcuterie program while fun signature cocktails complement dishes like charred globe artichokes and beef tartare. And then there’s the steak. Local prime angus 60-day dry aged steaks and 30-day salt packed beef tenderloin are the robust stars of an encore-worthy show-- which is the best steak in the DC area.

The Urban Butcher is an outstanding place for dinner. We heard a lot about it from our Son who has been there several times, but this was our first visit to celebrate my wife’s Birthday. From the moment we entered the restaurant, we were warmly greeted by the front attendant. We were promptly seated at our table and service began immediately. Our waiter (forgot his name) was there only one week, but you would swear he owned the place. He was very personable and informative and provided superior service for our dinner service. He even gave us a tour of the cooler aging room where the meats are aged, a very interesting experience. All of our steak entrees were incredible, some of the best rib-eye I have ever eaten. We can’t wait to return!
Urban Butcher knocked it out of the ballpark. The steak and charcuterie were very high quality, the execution was spot on, and the vibe is fun.
No value food for the money
The food was very expensive and not very good at all. Ordered steak and fish and pasta and everyone didn’t like it. The service was horrible. They forgot a whole dish then rushed it out and didn’t finish cooking it. I do not plan to go back and would not recommend it.
Great place for beef and lamb as well as charcuterie.
We ordered the Meat Mountain, which is an incredible bargain. We had enough meat left over for two more meals for two. The aged steak was the best beef I've had in the U.S. Be sure to tip extra--the Meat Mountain is served on a cast-iron mini-stove with charcoals to keep the food warm. It looks extremely heavy. Bless the staff who carry it to and from tables.
Love the new, revised menu. The original was good but loved the simplicity of the updated version. Lavender mojito is always a favorite. Chef's table assortment was very tasty though I did miss the labeling of the items on the board. Tuna ceviche was delicious and very well seasoned. Had a bite of the hubs Mac and cheese which was a beautiful twist on a favorite - cheesy but not gooey. Hubs enjoyed his food (can't remember how its spelt) and my bronzini which is often a favorite missed the mark with very little seasoning and no filler since I was led to believe it would be stuffed with jalapenos and some starch. All in all it was good. Still one of my favorites. BTW, love the new decor in the cosy room.
The food was good, and the service was excellent. They were able to accommodate a table for 7 in the back where it was much more quiet. The doughnuts alone are a reason to go.
All our steaks were underdone, they delivered the meals at different times, and the service was terrible.
The Urban Butcher has a good variety of meats for the hungry! It also has side dishes and entrees that can be shared and eaten by those who are not into meat. We recently celebrated a birthday, and the only thing to mention is that we had a bottle of champagne to share and those at the end of the table didn't get a taste, as the server stayed at the head of the table most of the time. Other than that, we had a great time!
Great drinks !!!
Great fish for a meatatarian restaurant. Well done overall. Its loud—we had to speak up the whole time, but all of the dishes, sardines, artichokes, branzino, were delicious.
Steak was not flavorful and tasted old. Service was friendly but overall too expensive for the food.
We were seated quickly because we got there at 5 pm. We chose the pre-fixe dinner for $35and got the butcher board for an appetizer. It was different but good. Thank goodness there was pickles and olives on it because that was the only vegetable we had while we were there. I got the Lamb neck Tagliatelle and had to search for the meat among all pasta. The green peas were mushed like baby food and very unappetizing. My husband got the steak and fries and said it was ok but asked for more ketchup for his fries, which never came. The only dessert they have, donuts with Nutella whipped cream, tasted like funnel cakes. The Lavender Margaritas were interesting.
The tenderloin is to die for and the lamb saddle was scrumptious. The side selection is good but too sparse. And if you love meat but don't want a whole pound your selections are limited. Basically, two.
The food was amazing! I’m really happy that they’ve added a crab cake on the menu.
Date night with my wife. Service was fair at best. The wait staff was nice but very impersonal..it really took much to much time to serve our entree and the desert course was not delivered properly.
Food and drinks were great! The pork was superb! The service was lacking. It took forever to even give our order and that was only because we flagged the waiter down. We would recommend this restaurant for the food, but I truly hope they step up their service in the future. We went during restaurant week and had 3 courses: salad, meat mountain, and donuts. Our reservation was for 7:30. We had to wait at the bar for 20 min and it It took over 1 hr from arrival to get the salad. Overall, we were there for about 3 hrs.
We tried this restaurant on restaurant week, and overall, the food was fair but the waiter was incompetent. We opted for the meat tower and advised the waiter we do not eat pork, and asked if beef can replace the pork. He responded in the affirmative. After a wait of 35 minutes the meat tower arrived and it included the pork. We advised the waiter of this matter, he apologized, and asked if we wanted a new meat tower. In view of the time it took for the first order, we declined and asked if he would remove the pork and add some beef. Some 30 minutes later, after we have finished our meal, the waiter came with chicken sausage as a substitute. He could not explain why the kitchen sent chicken instead of beef. To add insult to injury, he added the chicken as a side order to our bill. When we advised the manager of this fiasco, he just shrugged his shoulders and offered a meaningless apology.
Service very slow. Way to noisy, had to yell to have a conversation. Had run out of all the lamb.
Great quality food! The dry aged steak is absolute perfection-I have recommended this place to lots of people for this steak in particular. Service has been consistently good and the renovated ambiance is a nice funky modern twist. Will continue to be one of my fave downtown silver spring spots!
Our reservation was for 7:30, but go there at 7:10 a little bit early. There was no a host at the entrance so we walked in looking for an employee until we found one. He immediately apologized and explained that they just got really busy. Afterwards, He found our names in the list and offer us if we would like to seat by the bar until our table was ready. We agreed and ordered the lavender margaritas which were delicious. We didn’t seat at the bar but at a high table for two by the bar and in front of the kitchen. They offered us if we would like to stay at the table and have dinner which we agreed. The first course was a wonderful fresh salad with greens, strawberries and mandarins. The second course was steak (cut in slices) with french fries, mine was well done and my husbands medium rare. Steaks were delicious and full of flavors and FF were hot and crunchy. The third course was four freshly fried donuts with a semi attached hole dusted with sugar in a plate served with a whipping cream/nutella mixed to deep your pieces of donuts if you wanted too. In general, the service was very good. Even though the restaurant was busy, we always had water in our glasses, they were always asking if we needed another drink or needed anything else. Our food came on time too. Very lively music. There were several families with babies and just people having a good dinner/or drinks. We selected the $35 PP x 2 and had three margaritas total (2/1) including tax/tip was $100. We will probably return soon.
We know and like Urban Butcher but....... it was restaurant week so crowded. Host was wonderful, friendly bringing bubbly for our 15 minute wait. Food steak and beef empanada were delicious. Frites and donuts were tasteless with no seasoning. Server did the bare minimum. Not friendly never asked how we were doing mumbled a thank you, Didn’t offer second drinks, As the crowd thinned out he got even less attentive and seemed more scattered which was weird. Couple next to us was very unhappy with their food and server so not isolated. Ruined the evening.
My husband and I decided to try Urban Butcher during restaurant week. The service was horrible, our waiter didn’t speak to us or provide information on the entrees. We were not offered refills on our drinks. I was really disappointed.
Great for meat lovers and vegetables are also very good. It is loud. Fairly expensive but there are bargains to be found. The Mountain of Meat for two is HUGE!
I had a wonderful time even though it got loud at some points.
The food was fairly good, but I was expecting a little better given the high price. Service was also not as friendly as you would expect from one of the pricier restaurants in the area. The decor is a little odd. If you have little kids, you might end up having to explain more than you wish if they see the art on the bathroom doors. I would have to say I prefer its sister restaurant, El Sapo, which has a better atmosphere.
Excellent spot! What an awesome concept! Love the trendy vibe and the food was incredible. We went for restaurant week and enjoyed the strawberry salad and empanadas for starters. We both had the hanger steak - really incredible what they do with this piece of meat! And our server recommended the perfect wine to accompany it. And the donuts for dessert - warm and delicious!
This was my first time visiting the Urban Butcher. The owner greeted us personally. He even came by the table to toast our daughter's birthday. The staff was fantastic and attentive. My family loves meat, and they were not disappointed. The especially loved the "Mountain of Meat" dish. We would definitely go back to dine there.
Had to yell to hear each other. Definitely not the place for quiet conversation.
Lavander margs were amazing and a great price. All the food I had was very tasty and at a reasonable price. I will be back!
The food was excellent. The aged ham and the dry aged steaks were new, delicious tastes that I am really glad to have experienced. The prices were high enough such that despite how good the food was, I don’t feel the need to come back. I’d recommend it to friends similarly: something that they ought to try at least once.
Very good, if expensive dinner on Saturday night was marred the slow and inattentive service. Our reservation for four people was at 7:00 p.m. We were seated promptly but our waiter was slow to take our order. Our appetizers came out promptly but there was a long delay before our main courses came. Our main courses arrived at 8:45 p.m., almost two hours after we sat done. Our waiter was quite unconcerned about the delay.
Prodigious proteins prepared perfectly!
Date night with the missus- we had a good time. The pastrami appetizer was something special. Hanger steak was nice and lamb top round was very good, medium-rare was deliciously bloody.
We’ll be back.
Very good food. Very nice food presentation.
Urban Butcher has consistently provided excellent service over the years and the atmosphere is always warm and welcoming. Carnivores will not be disappointed. The cuts are great and prepared as requested. I’ve never tried the fish or chicken though, although perhaps someday I should. Wines selection is good, and servers are generally quite good at providing guidance if you are not sure about what to select. A word about the dried meats: delicious. One disappointment this time: The menu at this most recent visit did not offer sauces to accompany meat choices like my last visit.
Everything was great except food was a bit cold
Great meal, and great service !
