With our welcoming patio, open-air dining room and upbeat sidewalk bar, we pride ourselves as much on the quality of our products as our vibrant atmosphere. An in-house meat cellar showcases an artisan charcuterie program while fun signature cocktails complement dishes like charred globe artichokes and beef tartare. And then there’s the steak. Local prime angus 60-day dry aged steaks and 30-day salt packed beef tenderloin are the robust stars of an encore-worthy show-- which is the best steak in the DC area.
I took my husband to Urban Butcher for Fathers Day and he was in Heaven. He has carried the city paper around for a year and a half trying to get the Meat Mountain. He was so happy to get there and even HAPPIER when he received the Mountain. It was delicious and he had it all to himself. Thank you for the good service and the quality meat. We will be back!
The food was extraordinary. I can’t find bone marrow in many places and theirs delivered just what I was looking for. The downside is that the tables are very close together and the noise level makes it difficult to carry on a conversation. So go for good food with someone you don’t really want to talk to. 😉
but with the caveat that it is very loud which makes having a conversation difficult
First time here...food was awesome! Service on the other hand was horrible/slow. Waiter had 8 tables - way too many to provide service. Was left with nothing to drink several times. Stay is friendly & everyone is working hard doing their best. Just plan to be there minimum 2hours. Will try one more time in a few months to see if improved.
Food took a while to get to us, but we didn’t make a fuss as we were having a good time.
The host was a treat to meet and whenever he stopped by our table he brightened our visit! Our waiter, not as attentive seemed a bit aloof. The food was as expected with exception of the salad. Additional items were added so the salad was not as described on the menu.
For a meat specialty restaurant our meal (steak) was very underwhelming especially of the cost. The service was very poor.
The food is good; our problem was the noise level. We were sitting at a table for two, and found it quite difficult to carry on a conversation. There was a group of people nearby who kept drinking and getting louder
The dessert donuts were unusual and delicious
Took myself out for my birthday. Had the Urban Butcher Gin & Tonic...ok I had several. They were good. I like that they served whipped butter with the bread. The tuna ceviche was good. The whole grilled branzino was was really good. The truffle Mac & cheese was dry, did not have enough cheese, and had too much truffle oil. Also it would be better to lose all those bread crumbs (like eating sand) and replace with melted cheese on top.
We had a reservation but were still seated in a weird back room when there were lots of seats in the pretty, open-windowed front room. I couldn’t tell who our server was for a good half hour after we were seated. The first course was good: Brussels sprouts, empanadas, butcher’s board. I like how the charcuterie is labeled on the parchment. I had the lamb chops which were perfect. The broccolini that I got with was pretty much just raw and charred. Not edible, really. Nice, brief wine list. I think we should have sat at the bar.
I am also really creeped out by the cow skulls mounted in the back dining room. Yes, we need to be aware that the steak we are eating came from an animal that was slaughtered for this purpose. But do their ghosts need to be staring down at us as we dine?
The cuts of meat were exceptional as usual and service with Jason was perfect! It’s my 3/4th time at Urban Butcher and every time they meet and exceed expectations!
Great food, great drinks and great staff. This has been our go-to restaurant for special occasions for two years now. We loved the changes made during the renovations - the new decor was amazing, and the new stools for the bar and high-tops were much more comfortable than the old ones.
This was one of several visits to Urban Butcher. We have brought different friends each time. Each time our friends have been impressed by the service, the food and the bargain for Happy Hour. Urban Butcher's Hour may be one of the best bargains in the DC metropolitan area.
The food was OUTSTANDING. Cannot recommend this restaurant highly enough if you are a beef lover.
Food was delicious but our waiter was horrible; manager on duty apologized profusely and gave us some prosciutto on the house. Would recommend this restaurant for the great food; maybe our waiter just had a bad night.
2nd time visiting, both have very similar results. The food is excellent but the service is very poor. I waited 45 min for my check and 20 more after it was finally taken. The waiter spilled sauce on my shoes and the stain will not come out. Overall decent restaurant.
Great food and cool atmosphere, with open walls on a balmy night. No dessert/special for birthday dinner celebration though...
Excellent Experience. The entire staff was absolutely wonderful. Best service in a long time. The food was excellent. Meat perfection.
Disinterested server, long wait to receive the food, were first told we could order from the happy hour menu and then told we were seated in the wrong part of the restaurant to order from that menu, overall quite different experience from my first visit. Food was unremarkable. Would not return.
Water glass came dirty...
Meat was extremely fatty
No soda water, no iced tea...basic drink for this time of year
The ambiance and great service was followed by delicious food. Our table had three different entrees and each were delicious, but all were steak or burgers. I can’t wait to go back to have their fish, which is also delicious!
It is one of the finest restaurants in down town silver spring, MD what amazing steak that i had!
Service was awful. Had to keep asking the hostess to find our waiter for attention . Many food items were not available. Food was good when it finally came. Other diners experienced the same frustration. So noisy that conversation was almost impossible. Very expensive for this kind of experience.
We had had a group of 8 and we really enjoyed the whole experience. This is a must restaurant to experience. The setting, staff, food and drinks were excellent. I have been telling family and friends this restaurant is a must. We will be returning to the Urban Butcher again!
Outstanding service and food!
To be honest, I have given this place multiple chances—three times and three different main courses.
The ribeye is probably the best. The lamb Picanha smelled funky, and the beef Picanha was just off, and slightly over done.
It appears as if the meat quality is actually good. The prepping/seasoning process is misguided. The flavor of citrus or something resembling citrus dominated the beef Picanha. If you’ve had it in a Brazilian steakhouse, it’s nothing like that.
We were in the side section of the restaurant and given how it’s small and cut off to the side, it was way too loud.
Service was great. Knowledgeable waiters, and the staff as a whole is kind and welcoming.
Long story short, we had two drinks, two sides, an appetizer, and a beef Picanha for two the last time I went—cost me 120 dollars without tip. Not worth it. I still tipped my waiter because none of this was his wrong doing so I was out 145 at the end of the night...
I think management should focus on Urban Butcher, it seems like all attention has gone to El Sapo. Cooking techniques are off, and that’s an easy fix. At present, prices don’t resemble taste. I would come back if the cooking methods were upgraded.
I love Urban Butcher, great food and quick service!
This place is overhyped and overpriced. Don't go there expecting to get a great meal for what you are paying. The service is lackluster bordering with rude. They seem to be doing you a favor by allowing you to eat their creations. When we ordered our meals, one of us ordered steak tartare with a side of fries, clearly as a main dish. Tartare came ahead of all other food, accompanied with a piece of soggy toast with Parmesan on top (parmesan???), a soft boiled chicken egg and a MAYONNAISE sauce (tartar sauce does not go with steak tartare!). Steak tartare is one of those dishes that should not be messed with and these guys made it "their own" and inedible. We asked for crisp, not soggy, toast twice. First they brought back some thick soft bread with butter. Then the same soggy toast. On top of everything the server instead of apologizing rolled her eyes and left. Other people there seemed to be doing just fine, but we won't be coming back. I'd say go in with lowered expectations and willing to overspend on a mediocre meal.
First time at this restaurant. I will not return. I liked the set-up and ambience, and the service was fine.
We were a party of four and ordered the large ribeye and the large filet mignon, both serve two people each.
Both meats had been sliced for us when they got to the table which in principle would be fine and convenient, the issue here is that the meat was barely warm when it got to us, so it was obviously sitting there for a few minutes after it was cut and before it got to us. Completely unacceptable! This place specializes in meat, they should know better.
There are many other places to go eat meat that I try, so I will not be coming here again.
Food was absolutely fantastic! My friend and I only ordered off of the Happy Hour menu. I can't wait to try the entree options!
Mediocre food. Terribly long wait for the food. Impossible to have conversation due to noise levels.
Actually had the salmon on the early dinner special and it was great.
Great vibe. Side room is somewhat quieter than main room. Pastrami appetizer was ridiculously good. Pastrami can be overly salty-not this pastrami! Don’t waste time with the bread...it takes away from the flavors of the meat, crunchy cabbage, and house-made mustard.
The tenderloin was fabulous. Cooked to a perfect medium-rare, it was incredibly tender. The crisp garlic cloves adds a great flavor. The baked potato with lime butter was awesome!
We did not have dessert, but the donuts with Nutella whipped cream looked amazing. The table next to us raved about them. Definitely going back!
My husband and had the beef tenderloin for two which was amazing with French fries and grilled Brussels sprout and we ordered the bacon flavor mango goat cheese and vanilla ice cream which was different
After reading many reviews about Urban Butcher, I was a bit wary about dining here with my SO. However, it was his birthday and he seriously loves meat so I decided to give it a go. We were sat right away right next to the open garage door which was awesome for such a lovely day. The hostess acknowledged his birthday, however, for a restaurant with such high prices, i'm surprised the restaurant didn't do anything for his birthday. Our server was very nice, but never checked on us. Our apprentice board showed up fairly quickly (the lamb bacon was delicious!), but we waited about 45 minutes after finishing the board before our meat mountain showed up. The meat mountain was tasty, but it wasn't $95 tasty. The pork was outstanding and the beef delicious, but both my SO and I could have done without the chicken sausage.
Overall, the service is not the best as many have mentioned because the servers seem to have more tables than they can handle (having worked in the restaurant industry in DC, I get it, but you may need more staff), it can get pretty loud, and the food is good, but not great enough for the prices. If we ever go again, I'd skip the meat mountain.
I went to the restaurant on a date with my wife. I ordered the lamb burger with lettuce, tomato, cheddar, and avocado. The burger was delicious and cooked exactly as ordered, but the service was subpar. I twice emphasized to the waiter that I wanted avocado on the burger, but the server brought the burger without it. I think this was the kitchen’s oversight. It was not the end of the world, but it did irritate me. I pointed the omission out to the fellow who served us, when he just happened to pass by our table. He then went to the waiter, who after a while came to our table to make sure he understood the problem! The waiter then went to the kitchen to complete my order. After a while, the server delivered it to the table as a side. Nor was there salt and pepper on the table. I had to request it too. It also took too long to get the waiter’s attention to ask for the check. I don’t necessarily blame the kitchen or the waiter - things were hectic - but I guess the lesson is that Urban Butcher needs to find a way to up its game as far as service is concerned when things are busy.
The food was delicious, and the service was very prompt, courteous and attentive
The meat is great. It's served very fatty, but that can be trimmed off and the lean is extra flavorful. Get the prix fixe Mountain of Meat and you can have a generous lunch off the leftovers.
This night the bartending was off. I ordered their variant of a Moscow mule, but it was undrinkably filled with cloves or cinnamon--a lot. I sent it back and then ordered a vodka gimlet, which tasted like cloves again. Then I ordered their variant of a gin and tonic (with rosemary) and got a pretty good Moscow mule (not tonic; ginger beer). Strange.
But the meat makes the trip worth it.
