Upstate Craft Beer & Oyster Bar puts what it does right in its name. This is a place custom designed for fans of local small-batch brews and a well-stocked raw bar. The inside of the restaurant is as cozy and comfortable as one would expect, as it is a relaxed atmosphere similar to a sports bar in the off-season. One of the keys to Upstate's success is its commitment to freshness. So much so that there isn't even a freezer in the building as everything is brought in fresh daily.Obviously, the oysters and clams are what most patrons come for, and Upstate's selection of west and east coast varieties changes every day, depending on what is available. That's certainly not the only thing on the menu, though. Guests can try out shared plates of house cured salmon, crab cakes, squid salad and even sea urchin.

Enjoyed the menu and Happy hour is a great deal with 6 nice oysters and a fine glass of wine for less than a drink at some other places. Delicious scallops and quick, attentive service. Fun old school soundtrack too. Will be back soon!

They have an excellent selection of oysters which is never a bad way to start a dinner. Service was prompt and friendly in all respects. Nice selection of craft beers as well. Food was very good too. Our favorites were the tuna tartare, scallops, and the oyster shooters were fun (although the spice from the bloody mary mix really hit the back of my throat)

The best! Went to Upstate pre-covid and the indoor space was cute, now they've opened outdoor seating with much more room. Their oyster happy hour is the best in the city.

we moved out of New York ten years ago and had he chance to return to Upstate and the food and oyster are still spectacular. The craft beer and wine pairings are yummy. The service is always friendly and efficient. If you are a seafood/oyster lover this is a must stop! Go ty it now and the West Coast oyster are always a worthy start to the evening.

I especially enjoy clams and fettuccini - their speciality. The fettuccini was cooked perfectly. As the clams are at least moderate in size they were chewy, Very Chewy. I was not able to bite through them after a few minutes. Generally I’ve had this with a white wine sauce, theirs was thick with butter. Way too much butter for me. We each ate half and felt a little ill afterwards

We love Upstate - the happy hour is hard to beat. The quality of the oysters are top notch, the beer selection excellent. They are also very accommodating (providing a taste of beer before purchase, made us roasted potatoes, that were NOT on the menu). We will be back...

I would recommend they reserve the inside tables for people with reservations rather than trying to limit other patrons’ time eating so that they can better honor them. We had a 6:30 reservation and we’re seated around 6:50 because no tables were available and they didn’t seem to plan well. We made our reservation to be there well before the end of happy hour. We almost didn’t make it.

I am very disappointed with the visit on Friday (08/12). First, I had a reserve. When I arrived they told me to wait. I waited 10 minutes and then asked the hostess “why there are no places because I have a reservation” her answer was aggressive and she almost screamed “what can I do, all is busy” and called the manager. I can understand her, but don't give table with reservation to other!”. I’ve got poor hospitality, rudeness from the hostess and didn't get my table, my mood was ruined. I am very sad, because I loved the place in general and came to you very often

Had a great dining experience at Upstate. The food was impeccable as always, the bar staff was very accommodating and made me a French 75 with bourbon in order to deliver on my request for a Champagne cocktail, and the wait staff was both attentive and speedy. Thanks for making our night

The drinks were just okay; a beer option definitely world have been better…BUT the oysters were fantastic and the service was great! This is a cute little joint to go to with oyster lovers. Definitely recommend trying them out!

This place is a gem. Excellent food and atmosphere, with great prices. The 5-7pm happy hour special of 6 oysters and a beer (or can upgrade to a glass of wine) is fantastic. The servers are super accommodating if you have special dietary needs. The next time someone tells you NYC is expensive, bring them here. Especially if they like oysters and other seafood.

Upstate is small by intention, and when it gets full - which is always - the noise level can be loud. If you go into the meal understanding that, you will have a great time! The food is consistently fresh, very well executed and imaginative. They’ve got a large list of fresh raw oysters and clams, varieties changing with supply. The rest of the menu is equally dynamic - they don’t have freezers - because everything is FRESH.

My husband and I went there for the happy hour oysters/beer and it was excellent. The oysters were so fresh, we had 3 dozen between us and each one was good. We sat outside in the tent area, and it had a really nice ambience, it was a cold day, but the heaters made it comfortable. Our waiter was outstanding. Great experience
