Upstairs at the Ace has been one of my favorite relaxed rooftop bars in DTLA, but when they blocked off the pool area (really, its prettiest spot) due to COVID, I'll wait to return until post-pandemic.
I want to tell people not to go there because then our secret spot would be outed, but we really love the staff and want them to get mad tip$$$ so you should go and drink drinks and have snacks on the roof. You won't be sad.
We stayed at the ace hotel this was well worth the reservation! We booked for golden hour and the view + cocktails were SO good!

Arrived to an incredibly loud and tight space. The dress code said business casual but we were placed next to the hot tub.
Didn’t stick around for food or drinks, cause it seems like we’re we bait and switched as we had made the reservation a week in advance.
The furnishings are extremely worn and need replacing especially the white leather chars. There was insufficient light to see our food. Plastic cups even though we were not in the pool area Just all round extremely disappointing.
Substandard service. Around 7pm it wasn't busy at all, but:
1. Did not see my waiter to pay the bill. Asked another. Got a reply: "Sorry my shift is over and I am leaving". He did not bother to call a coworker.
2. Finally found a waiter. Got a bill. Found a random $20 charge for a drink I did not order. "Oops, sorry for a mistake".
3. Found a strange 4.5% service surcharge on the bill which "is not paid directly to the employees". Apparently it is hidden as a small print at the end of last page of the menu. And the only way to order is to dowload a pdf to your phone, so no one reads a small print on the last page you don't read.
A manager did not have any good explanation of what this charge is for and where the money go and why this charge is not included in normal prices like any other restaurant expense. And he did not care much.
I don't mind paying extra to support struggling service industry. I resent sneaky ways to get money without even pretending to provide a good service.
My overall impression after leaving the restaurant:
- Staff don't like working there
- Staff don't care
- I don't care to be back
The server made our stay. He was marvelous and very knowledgeable and personable. The food was not bad either. A great selection of beer, and my only gripe would be the lack of draft beers available.
The space is gorgeous and the service excellent. Great drinks. The menu is very limited and lack luster. Great place for a drink and a snack
Great Management! This place had a peaceful environment however, It’s pictures make you believe it’s standard poolside dining however it’s actually only accessible by the hotel guests. Cerviche was meh. Drinks were average. Probably won’t go back. Loved the QR scan menu option.
We had a really good time, but we had come for the pool and were given completely conflicting stories for the terms of using the pool and ultimately did not get to use it, despite asking specifically about that on the phone and getting confirmation that our reservation would let us use the pool. It was a lovely day nonetheless, but we were very disappointed and felt like more clarity would have been good.
Shrimp quesadillas was delicious. Atmosphere is awesome. I live this place

It was our first time and had the worst experience. Our alcohol drinks came out after some of our food, over 30 minutes (Keep in mind there were only a few occupied tables). It took over 20 minutes to get a fountain drink. The waiter said " there was a mix up with the tickets" . The service was horrible and will we will not return. The food was okay, nothing spectacular.

The manager and staff were great. I made plans to get together with some old friends I hadn't seen in over a year, and I chose Upstairs at The Ace Hotel as a perfect outdoor setting. The friend completely forgot she was meeting me, and does not understand the new Covid rules for restaurants; reservations held for only 15 minutes, with a 2-hour window for the table, etc.
When I finally got ahold of her she said she'd be there soon. I said to forget it and we'd try again another time, but she insisted she'd be on her way.
I was ready to just stay alone and enjoy. I did that, and had a glass or two of wine and a plate of olives, and was very content. (I really enjoy going out alone, and avoiding one of the hassles of relying on unreliable people being on time and not changing plans numerous times)
The manager and staff gave some leeway and let me stay at the table until my forgetful friends arrived. Then we enjoyed a lot more wine and food.
The view, ambience, and menu is always great, but the service was so wonderful that I just had to get my little venting story out.

Waited 20 min for a table even though we had a reservation. Once upstairs service was slow and they messed up our order. Only 1 server on the floor and busing her own tables so she was too busy to pay attention to the customers. Only got to have 1 drink cause she never came back around.
Great view at night, very romantic, drinks and apps were excellent.
Why are $16 drinks being served in plastic ware? I am not sure if it is due to Covid but I expected a little more class.

Great place although I wasn’t happy with the 2 hour limit especially if we’re continuing to order drinks as opposed to babysitting them. However our waitress wasn’t rushing or pushy at all.
Views are amazing and it is reservation only due to the restrictions because of Covid. They have a good selection of different types of alcohol but for cocktails they only had about 4 or 5. The music for me was not my taste and our seat was right under one of the speakers and it was blaring so it was too loud and uncomfortable for us. We had to spinach artichoke dip which wasn’t bad. Food item is required just so you are aware and don’t come too full unable to eat anything.
Due to covid restrictions, my experience at Ace was unpleasant. Went to celebrate a Bday, but once we sat we were instructed we couldn't get up from our table or walk to the edge to get a view of LA.
Also must buy food to have a drink caught me by surprise.
The pool area is off limits unless you're staying at the hotel.
Great spot to get away from the world we are enduring but also feel safe with the new normal.

It was my wife’s birthday and our first date since before the pandemic...very lovely evening and experience.
This was a cute little place. Wasn’t crowded at all. They were out of ceviche when we got there around noon. The food was ok, nothing special. It was a cool first experience but won’t be going back again.
Very nice ambience in the main area. Please indicate area (pool vs main) during booking process.
The food was nasty. It was not cooked all the way and was not worth ordering. The service was also not up to par. They were not accommodating and seemed to be not organized whatsoever. Took them 7 minutes just to walk us up.

Great atmosphere. Perfect place for my friends and I to meet up for a few drinks. The staff was amazing. Erik and Leah were terrific. Definitely happy that this spot is open again.
Food was extremely basic, their iPad was “down” so they couldn’t adjust the music volume which was way too loud and multiple guests had complained. Not enough umbrellas and/or shaded space given the heat.
Great experience and staff is definitely taking Covid-19 precautions.
I'm sure anybody of color non Asian would agree never to return seat arrangements were staged they did everything they could to make us feel uncomfortable I didnt stay long enough to eat but it did seem like a good place to hang out outside the service I did ask to speak to Manager to express my concern he had all the answers my favorite was we were not given a straw because of covid less contact the better he says lol so you want me to put my mouth on this second hand buffet table plastic cup? I asked ..hahah complete joke ...But the Asian people looked very pleased with there smokey chilled glasses with straws and big bowls of chips and salsa we were 4 people deep we were a 1/4 cup of salsa and about a dozen stale chips while we soaked in the heat no shade offered after our seat were arranged per our arrival tho we seated somewhere else management made the call to place us in the full dead of sun with no ice in our drinks lol just comical but like I said I didnt stay long enough to eat very uncomfortable
One of my favorite spots downtown is the rooftop at ace hotel. Sadly, due to the insanity of things going on it's just not a great experience. Wait for 30-40 minutes to get temp scanned and all the rules etc. The wonderful staff is hamstrung with restrictions and you cannot hear them with their dual face masks on. The main point is to go and socialize which is not really possible any longer. Sure hope we all wake up from this ridiculous fear driven theater soon...
