UPSTAIRS 2 Ratings and Reviews
Went here for a friend's birthday. First off, the manager was amazing. Friendly, knowledgable. Our actual server? Not so much. This place is located above The Wine House and the restaurant is centered around wine. When we asked the server how different glasses of wine were, his answer was, "I think it's supposed to be good." When I asked what one of the meats under the charcuterie list was, his answer was, "Cured meat." Other than this, the food was solid, came out at a nice pace, and we enjoyed ourselves overall.
In a word, inconsistent. One of us had duck breast, dish was quite good and the accompaniments excellent. The other asked for medium rare salmon; it was delivered well-done and dry. After our complaint, the chef (apparently a humorist) delivered a piece of literally raw salmon. (It was warm, so at least it had not been delivered straight from the cooler.)
They attempted to charge us for the salmon; after an objection to the manager, it was removed from the bill without any apologies.
Between the difficulty of accessing the restaurant at dinner hour (it is next to an entrance to the 405 which backs up for blocks), the inconsistent food, and the management attitude, perhaps it would be best to find another venue. We certainly will.
This restaurant is always great - so great that we brave the traffic jam that sometimes occurs due to location. There is ample parking once you get there and inside is serene (especially after the traffic). Recommend going early and allow a little extra travel time.
Great food and wine choices with super service and expert Somellier Marlyn- location next to 405 not ideal but if you can look beyond that. If this restaurant was near beach or in BH, it would be so famous but then might loose its great value- so it’s a hidden gem
Upstairs 2 is one of our favorite restaurants and never disappoints. This time we went for DineLA. My wife and I agree the cauliflower soup was delicious and smooth as silk. My wife enjoyed her salmon, I the pork chop. Highly recommend the wine pairing. That is the strength of this restaurant. Maiki makes amazing food with seasonal ingredients and Marilyn knows how to pair wine to please your taste and perfectly compliment what you are eating. It works both ways; pick what you want to drink and there is food to match, or pick what you want to eat and there are excellent wines by the half glass, glass, carafe or bottle to enhance the food. They were packed last Saturday for DineLA, but quality and service were as good as ever.
Went here for Restaurant week and had a great meal! The staff was excellent, from the host, server and bussers. The Food was amazing - I wish I could have ordered more food because I wanted to try a little bit of everything! The wine selection was good as well. But Beware of the $38 glass of Barbera!
Upstairs 2 is located above the Winehouse, one of the best wine stores in all of California so this was a wine and dine evening. The restaurant participated in Dine LA and we ordered from a special Dine LA menu. Three courses for $39, accompanied by the wine pairing at $25 for 3 healthy pours. We had cauliflower soup, salmon, short ribs, and sticky toffee pudding for dessert and all were prepared to perfection. Every seat in the restaurant was filled, but service was excellent throughout the evening and we never felt rushed or "moved along." We've ordered from the regular menu but it was a nice treat to have an excellent meal at a bargain price.
Great food and service. Saturday night get together with another couple. They loved the goose special. I had the steak and Parmesan fries - outstanding. My husband and daughter had the salmon. Huge portion and cooked to perfection but only so-so taste. We all shared the creme brûlée and chocolate bread pudding. Both delicious!
Frequent guest for the past 8 years. Seasonal menu and excellent prix fixe speacials all paired with a recommended wine. Menu is sorted by wine first then recommended dish; awesome for the casual wine drinker and great for the more experienced palate. The staff has worked together for a long time and service is a well oiled machine. Free parking in the rooftop. Fantastic!
Upstairs 2 is a first rate restaurant that is not nearly as well known as it deserves. I've been there three times in the last two months and each time the experience has been memorable. One of the way I judge restaurants is by how many things on the menu I consider ordering, and I've still got a way to go. Excellent wine list (Affiliated with the wine store downstairs).
Definitely worth the try.
The atmosphere and menu were very good, the service was acceptable, attentive and friendly.
The food was well prepared, the lamb chops were well prepared and the spinach-chestnut accompaniment was out of this world good,
The portion sizes and price were not comparable with good value. I get it that tapas is small portions, but the prices ($7.00 for a baguette) were a bit high,
As you can see by other reviews, this truly is a neighborhood gem. It's located on top of the Wine House, so the wine list is superb. As you can see by the menu, they recommend foods and wines to go with them. You can drink by a small amount, a full glass or bottle. (I liked that I could try a number of dishes with different wines.) The food is outstanding - mostly small amounts that allow you to try a number of dishes. I had, for example, the Warren Pear & Butternut Squash Salad that I enjoyed with a delicious chardonnay. We also had the Fried Chicken Bao - spicy, but unbelievably good. The inside is quiet, small and lovely, so it's a great spot for a small gathering (i.e. two to four people). Highly recommended.
Dine at Upstairs 2 for the wine and food pairings. The wine selections are fantastic. The food is creative and delicious. The restaurant was lively and our servers were attentive the whole evening. We went with friends who had never been to Upstairs 2 and everyone said they wanted to go back and dine at the restaurant again.
The best way you can describe the location is, " different" I like the place. ELK chop was great. Kale Salad better than I expected and flat bread better than a any other flatbread I have had so far.
Service was good. The host also chatted with me on the way out reminding me that we could park upstairs and the offer free valet. Overall I had a good night.
