Food ranged from bland and overpriced to downright terrible.
Good restaurant but definitely not transcending and too expensive for the kind of food that was served. Still ok though.
A quirky place with a quirky menu. We always discover something unexpected and unusual there. The oysters are awesome. A bit of a hidden treasure.
Wonderful neighborhood gem.
I went here for a birthday celebration. Reservations are a must because it is so tiny, but if you are looking for a low key but special place for a small celebration you can't go wrong.
Overall the food is good. Portions are on the small side especially for the price. I got a Tito's on the rocks and the pour was on the small size for $14.
The food was exceptional and the staff was wonderful. They were super helpful in answering all of our questions and the food was delivered in a very timely manner. We had a truly wonderful experience!
We wanted to like The Upholstery Store, really. We liked the space; the service was friendly and good. The food was middling at best. We'd go back for a glass of wine but the food needs to improve to be competitive with the many good nearby alternatives.
Great wine list and sommelier, food is creative, fresh and delicious. The Viennese secession decor is perfect, and Thonet chairs and coat rack. The staff are friendly and lovely. Also amazing value. Small dishes but filling and very satisfying. Dessert and cheese selection also are wonderful.
Portions were rather small.
Enjoy sitting at the bar. Food is delicious. Staff very friendly and good wine selection at happy hour.
Wonderful in every way. This is a great alternative to its parent restaurant.
Kurt’s daughter was a gracious hostess and server. Cocktails were wonderful as was the food and ambiance. We’ll be back
Food was outstanding. Only thing better was the attentive and friendly staff. Will definitely be back

Best place ever !!!!!
It’s on our neighborhood so it feels like home- We Dave it for romantic occasions - like birthdays and Valentine’s Day-
Dear Neighbor, Thank you for your kind words! We are very glad and thankful to have such amazing supporters like you. See you around! Upholstery Team
The restaurant is very cozy, exactly what we wanted on a cold night. When we entered I noticed immediately that it was quite warm, but I never became uncomfortable. The woman that sat us also served us. She was knowledgeable about the wine list and the menu. At her suggestion we had the tuna steak to start, however my friend’s lobster roll arrived before the appetizer. It wasn’t offered that they take it back and deliver a fresh lobster roll after our appetizer. The tuna steak was delicious and fresh tasting, and the greens were lightly dressed and refreshing. My friend said the lobster roll was not bad, although a little mayo-heavy for her liking and the roll was cold by the time she ate it after the appetizer. I had the squid ink pasta with scallops in a coconut cream sauce. The pasta was perfect and light with great flavor. The coconut cream was a touch rich but went well with the pasta. There was only one smallish scallop on the plate, cut in half, so I felt that to call it a dish with scallops was inaccurate - there should have been at least 2 or 3 scallops to really round out the dish. Overall we had a nice dinner, I would return and looking forward to doing so.
Thank you for your feedback! We are glad that you liked our services and our dedicated staff will be pleased to learn of your high praise. We truly appreciate your insight and we will strive to make improvement and deliver great experiences consistently. We hope you will come back soon and try our other dishes and drinks. All the best.
Food was good, small dishes are not expensive so you can sample many, service was professional. We could easily have a conversation. Would be nice if they had flutes for sparkling wine...:)
Very much enjoyed dinner with a friend at this low key place in the Village. We enjoyed the wine, the ambiance and the service and the food was outstanding.
Hi KarinK, We are so glad you and your friend enjoyed the dinner with us. Thank you for letting us know! We hope you will join us again soon. Best, Upholstery Team
The perfect spot for a birthday dinner with friends. It's a tiny, intimate space but they had a secluded nook at the back for our party of six. The menu had a good selection of options for those who did or didn't eat meat/fish. Well-priced wine list and friendly servers.
Thank you for choosing us for your birthday dinner! We are so happy to learn that you enjoyed the celebration with us. Look forward to having you join us again soon. Upholstery Team
We were seated in a back room. This was perfect because we were catching up with old friends we had not seen in a good while. Much quieter back there.
Cosy place with lovely staff. Table was booked for seven but we didn't get seated till half past. Service was a little on the slow side but it was a busy night. Staff were lovely and explained the American way of tipping to us Brits. Portions could have been a little bigger for the prices charged but the food was lovely..
We had the privilege of eating Christmas dinner there. It was just about perfect! The service, food ambiance were all wonderful. I loved the small personal feel of our dinner experience for my family. Thank you!
Excellent staff. Great chicken paprikas! Nice wine selection. Could use a couple more desserts.
A cozy corner cool wine bar with open kitchen and very good food and wines at reasonable prices. Chefs surprises and general warm ambiance by good staff and
Owner ( famed Austrian Wallsee chef) who oversees this next door location.
Well worth it to escape the glitz of Mestpacking district!
The food wasn't really special or did it live up to the reviews I read, sorry to say.
I had the large shrimp which really should have been flavored in an interesting way. It wasn't a cohesive taste.
The best was the service, very friendly and helpful. Also a good wine from Franken.
But I really expected a lot more from the food.
Great atmosphere and staff. Delicious food but incredibly small portions for the price.
The drinks sound super interesting on the menu and I love Smokey flavors and whiskeys but they just didn’t come together and while not terrible cocktails they are mearly drinkable. The actual meal however was poor. My scallop was not cooked at all it was still cold in the middle and had no crust to it at all which is hard todo as you only have to cook a scallop 1 minute per side. It seems like a great neighborhood or date spot. the atmosphere is intimate and energetic. If you want to go for a cocktail or wine for a date or hangout with friends I would give it 4 stars but for dinner I wouldn’t go!!
I was very impressed with this place. I had never been and found it just by walking by and reading the menu outside. The cuisine looked interesting and the prices were not too high. The atmosphere was great with lots of brick and cozy corners. The waitstaff was very but not overly attentive and very personable. The food was so good. The crabmeat linguine was especially delicious. We also enjoyed the hangar steak and the paprika chicken. The cocktails were made to perfection. And, probably because we were there in the late afternoon before the full-on dinner crowd, it was quiet and easy to talk to each other. The only negative I would say are the chairs. The banquettes are comfortable but the chairs are not comfortable on the back. There's no support. But overall it was a minor detail. I'd definitely go back.
I really like this restaurant. Warm and relaxed and food is delicious! They always let you taste wine before pouring a full glass and some great wines available from Austria. I've now been here twice and not only would recommend but look forward to coming back again.
An Interesting seasonal menu delivered on the promise of a great meal. The small space is charming if somewhat desolé but perhaps that is what is charming about it. We ordered four dishes and a dessert. The first two courses: we thought each was better than the one before. They were all (4) excellent. So much so that a delicious dessert that we made quick work of was deemed just “ok” for being predictable and perhaps not the right temperature. For fans of adjacent and related Walsé, here is a place to go when you do not feel like changing into the pants and shoes that the more formal aire of Walsè seems to warrant (but does not require.)
Tiny portions. Horrible service. Extremely overpriced because mains are sized less than that of appetizers at most restaurants. Have not received service this bad in years of dining out for every weekend meal.
Very good food. Kind of different. The crab linguini was delicious my dad enjoyed the duck
My friend and I both loved our experience in UPHOLSTERY. The food is wonderful as are your cocktails. Best oysters we both had had in a very long time. You have wonderful friendly and attentive servers too. Will definitely be returning and recommending to others! One minor point is the music (we loved the selection) could be a wee bit lower, allowing for more quiet conversation. But that said it was better than many restaurants' volumes on a weekend evening.
If the music had not been obtrusively painfully loud, I might have given this place another star. But I could not hear my dinner companion sitting across from me. The lobster soup was terrific, full flavored but not heavy. Arugula salad was adequate, about what I can get in a grocery store (almonds? peaches? manchego?). Grilled octopus was tender but bland, needed more grill flavor. Crab meat linguini was quite good and rich, crab flavor coming through nicely.
Wonderful but room was too warm.
Nice night... wife and I went to dinner Saturday night. We had a 9pm reservation and got there a few minutes early and were seated right away. Friendly waitress took our drink order; a Black sheep and Johnny fashion seed, both very tasty. Shared grilled octopus and cured salmon appetizers both outstanding. We asked for a little time before main course and waitress who was very good came back to us about 20 minutes or so later to ask if we were ready. We were and we also asked for help with the wine list since it featured German and Austrian wines and we’re not familiar with those regions.. being new she sent over another waiter who was kind enough to assist. Dinner selections were crabmeat linguini and squid ink pasta both excellent with portions just enough to be full but not stuffed. After dinner the chef popped his head out of the kitchen and came by our table .. we had a great chat, very nice young man... we wish him great success. He was kind enough to send us a terrific blueberry based dessert... great place, great food. We would definitely go back!
Did not eat any food but would come back to try more of their cocktails!
We came here as a group of 4 for my 29th birthday. Making a reservation was easy and we got lots of hands on attention from our waitress. The bread was fresh, warm and delicious and the squid ink pasta in the coconut broth was to die for. Would definitely go back.
