Our magical conservatory restaurant is set amid Updown’s rambling grounds. Dine under the grape vines surrounded by beautiful 17th century brick and watch the chefs in the open kitchen tending to the wood fired grill and original farm house bread oven. The restaurant has been completely transformed by owners Ruth and Oli to be heated and fully enclosed and is open year round.

Menus will be small, hyper seasonal and use the best of local and European produce and change on regular basis to reflect what’s best. Everything is cooked over wood in the open kitchen. There is a short list of exciting wines of limited availability, local beers and seasonal cocktails.

Monday - Friday lunch as well as Monday & Tuesday dinner we have a 3 course set menu along side our full menu at £35. On Wednesday nights along side our full menu we cook a Steak Night menu , priced at £30 per person for 3 courses. On Sunday our restaurant is only open for lunch 12 -4pm.

Updown has several beautiful spaces in which to host your private event. We have a beautiful conservatory Private Dining Room overlooking the farmhouse lawn. It is perfect for groups of 4 to 16 for a seated meal, or up to 20 for a drinks party. The main restaurant can accommodate up to 60 sitting or 150 standing and is ideal for a larger party.

Lovely Sunday roast, took a long time to be served and a lot of waiting between courses. Portions seemed quite small and not a lot of veg to go with a roast. For £50pp for 3 courses, would have expected a little more The staff were kind, but didn’t seem particularly happy or willing to help. The place is beautiful though and the food was tasty. Hoping this experience was just because it was a busy day!

The location is incredible. But the Sunday lunch wasn’t great I’m sorry. It’s £50 a head and you have to have 3 courses. The roast potato’s tasted like they’d been done in the deep fat fryer and came out swimming in a bowl of oil with the roast beef in the same bowl. If you pressed on a potato more oil came flooding out. The cauliflower cheese sauce was watery and the cauliflower hard. Then there was a random plate of peas. No other veg. On the kids menu they are only allowed to have pork if they order a roast, we asked if we could have beef as she didn’t like pork but was told no. Luckily our table was outside as inside was smokey from the cooking in the kitchen during the whole time we were there. You don’t mind these things if you’re paying a lower price but at this price you expect it to be flawless. This place has the potential to be exceptional and I’m sure they will be once they get through these teething problems.

The restaurant is set in the gardens within the beautiful grounds of the farmhouse. Being a summer's day for lunch, this comes into its own. The staff were friendly and welcoming upon our arrival, and the service was prompt and efficient. However, I don't remember being asked how our food was once served during the day. I think this is an important touch. Delicious nibbles and starters, but found the cooking style of the main course disappointing, both the rack of lamb and mackerel were served undercooked, which wasn't a great texture. The lemon tart dessert was spot on and a generous portion. The children ordered ice cream and got one very small (mean) scoop each for £5 per scoop. Seven adults and 2 children with two bottles of wine @£50 pb. Total cost £633.38 inc service. Felt the food is a little overpriced, and you are paying for the setting somewhat.

The food was exceptional but our service was a little disappointing. We arrived early at 7 but felt rushed through the entire meal, and items on the menu weren’t available. Our server was cold to us, which is frustrating in this part of england. Sommelier was lovely and very accommodating, and the small plates were delicious in a beautiful setting.

We had a fantastic lunch at Updown - a hidden gem in the Kent countryside. The setting was relaxed yet refined, with warm, attentive service. The whole experience felt effortlessly special. A wonderful restaurant and hotel I’ll definitely return to.

A hidden gem in the beautiful countryside. What used to be a working farm many years ago, has now been transformed into an absolute gem of a restaurant. A nice large car park greets you and a short walk, well signposted, to the restaurant. There we were met by staff who took our coats for us and showed us to our table. The menu was just enough, although perhaps an extra choice on the set menu would be nice. We didn’t go for the set menu and the food was absolutely amazing. It was brought to our table after drinks had been served and we didn’t have to wait long either. From starters to desserts we were well looked after. The seating area was in a converted outbuilding and it has been done to an excellent standard and we felt very comfortable indeed. This was a very enjoyable Friday lunchtime and we will be coming again. Some may say the price is slightly higher than other restaurants but you certainly get a very high standard of food and you won’t be disappointed at all.

The Updown is special. An amazing location, it’s very beautiful. The dining experience is well worth the prices of food and drink. Service is excellent, so I would recommend the restaurant.

Lovely lunchtime ambience. Table in a corner looking at an unused door. Very good portions. Fork needed for desserts. Toilets badly situated between kitchen & serving room involving congestion and they need regular checking and updating.
