Union Sushi + Barbeque Bar Ratings and Reviews
Had a reservation and had to wait 15 mins for the table, which was fine given it was a busy Friday night. Once seated, though, we waited another 15 minutes to order, another 10 to get our drinks, and over an hour to get our actual entrees (sushi, specifically). We got hot food 30 minutes before our sushi, which was cold by the time the sushi hit the table. The server did apologize and she was very nice, but in my opinion they should have comped us a dessert or sushi roll, something, for waiting an entire hour for sushi. The place was very loud and crowded and people next to us were very obnoxious. For $100 I feel like you can get better and much faster service. Food was 7.5/10 but service and ambiance ruined it for us. Won’t be going back.
Our server disappeared for long moments at a time. He said he couldn’t split the bill for us (which was a first I’d heard of since I do it all the time when I’m there). He then split the bill after a few minutes and told us we were holding up dinner service, pretty much kicking us out. Other servers were really friendly and attentive.
This was our first time at the restaurant. I loved the energetic vibe. We had both black rice sushi rolls and several items from the grill including kangaroo -- the sushi was amazing as was all of the grilled items. Also enjoyed the truffle tuna appetizer -- amazing flavor. We were there for a birthday and they surprised us with a special dessert which was nice.
I brought my friend for her birthday. I specified in my reservation through open table that it was her special birthday and that I would like a dessert for her. No dessert cake. Just a check that was dropped on the middle of the table. In addition, service was slow, seating was uncomfortable and too close to the neighboring tables, and everything took forever. And still, my friend got no dessert for her big day so it was pretty much a waste of a celebration. I was truly embarrassed.
The sushi here is so tasty and fresh with crispy ingredients and wonderful fish. The scallop containing rolls are the best i have ever had. Our waitress Dow knew the entire menu backwards and forwards and made great recommendations. The mushroom soup was a great start.
The bbq meats were seasoned and seared—we had kangaroo and lamb.....the lamb was much better !! Also had shrimp and chicken skewers and beef tongue—-the tongue was very tender. The bbq chef used a blow torch to sear some of the meats....
Lively atmosphere but not way noisy....
I can’t wait to return to Chicago for another meal here.
My favorite Happy Hour in River North! I've come here with friends several times and it never disappoints. The specials have changed a bit over the past year, but it's still a great value. $1 oysters, $5 moscow mules, $6 spicy shrimp rolls - all delicious! And they recently added a "Truffled Tuna" dish for $10, that was so good, we regretted only getting 1 to share amongst the 3 of us.
My husband, son and I love Union Sushi. It’s our go-to Sushi restaurant! We go for birthdays and just because as the food is delicious! We love the variety and uniqueness of the sushi, as well as the classic options. Our young son doesn’t eat sushi and loves the sliders! The service is always impeccable! Nothing but great things to say about Union!
Very good sushi, creative drinks and very efficient server. The staff at Union Sushi was accommodating and efficient. The restaurant was really bustling on a Saturday night but they managed to squeeze us in. Food came promptly but we did not feel rushed. Server answered all our questions and was friendly. The restaurant was a tad bit loud but we will definitely be back in the future.
I’ve been coming to Union for quite some time and decided it would be the perfect place to host our bachelorette dinner for my bf. it had something everyone liked and the ladies were able to share a few dishes so it wasn’t as costly as they expected. Service was amazing per usual, between the server, bartender and manager. Highly recommend!!
Fantastic dining experiene! The food was wonderful, and the service was outstanding - especially as they were willing to accommodate my spouse's food allergies. The only criticism is how tightly they pack the tables for two. Don't expect much distance between you and the conversations on either side.
I was back home in the city for the weekend and my sister and some friends met with me for dinner at Union Sushi. I found the restaurant to be delicious, from the edamame sitting out to the actual sushi dishes we ordered, and I was pleased with the service, too. They had a service "oops" moment and forgot to bring out a side dish my sister ordered, but they rushed one out to make sure she got to enjoy it with the meal and we were pleased they worked to make that so.
Overall, highly recommend- it's a nice spot right off the Chicago and Franklin Brown Line CTA stop, so get off the train and try it sometime. That's exactly how I ended up here (passing it so many times) and ended up really enjoying the food and service.
We ran the Chicago Marathon this past Sunday and what better way to celebrate the grueling work by eating. We are a big group with kids, so we had to find a spot that have kid options. Most of the downtown restaurants are either too pricey or booked until late, so we moved outside. And I am glad that we did.
I initially booked for 17 people on Saturday night. The reservation had a caveat that should we cancel, we are subject to a cancellation fee. I do not blame them. But I liked how OpenTable did not put this in small letters so anyone wouldn't miss this. They called back to confirm the party's number. And over the phone they assured me that they will take good care of our group. We are out of towners so the fact that the restaurant is 2 short blocks away from a station was wonderful. Unfortunately 7 of our party couldn't make it, because the day's heat took a toll on them, and the restaurant was understandable. We got seated in the corner where it's cozy so we can chat as much as we want to.
We were hungry so we went straight for entrees. My sis in law ordered the roasted eggplant, and I have to say that I will try to make that for home. It was good. We ordered sushis, bowls of ramen, barbecue sampler plate, katsudon, and chicken barbecue. Everything was well made, tasty, and fresh. The fish used on our sushi melted in our mouths, so we know that they didn't get some imitation of something. The portions/size was enough for our ravenous tummies. I am sort of glad we didn't go overboard with the appetizers.
We were full, so we held off on desserts; the kids wanted the ice cream trio, so we ordered. By this time, the manager came by to check on us. We told him how everything was wonderful, and he said that he'll bring some desserts out that he thinks we should try. He gave us the pumpkin mochi cake and the chocolate brownie. Well, those 2 were the cherry on top. Highly recommend the mochi cake, but save room for the chocolate brownie. Both were delicious!
I did enjoy my time at Union Station. I was there for a friends birthday. Everything was great until towards the end of my dinner. I felt very rushed to finish my meal as I was asked by the server and busser multiple times if I was done with my food. We were still picking at our food but were not done. We were exhausted by how many times we were asked that we just said yes. The restaurant was not even close to closing time. That was the only moment that was off setting for us. Other then that our server was friendly, food was delicious (as well as served in a timely matter), and atmosphere was great.
The atmosphere, the food, the drinks - everything - is amazing. I am quite the foodie and this place never fails to impress me or the fellow foodies I bring along with me. Highly recommend. If you have a big group - definitely get a reservation as it gets packed on the weekends.
I took my significant other to Union Sushi after making my first "big girl" paycheck. Given the choices under consideration, I am very pleased with settling on Union Sushi. I made a reservation using Open Table and changed the time twice with no problem after he was running late from work. When we arrived, we were seated immediately and the service was prompt throughout the meal. The food and drinks were spectacular. We were there during the happy hour, so we ordered all of the specials, two rolls which were not on the specials menu, four drinks, and a 25% tip for $150! Great deal!
