Union Street Restaurant
We are open for lunch and dinner seven days a week. We feature 32 draught beers, a display cooler with a wide selection of bottles from around the world, wine, and an amazing craft cocktail list. Dining is on two levels in our main bar area and our intimate lower level dining. In our upper level, Union Street offers a private or semi-private space for events such as birthday celebrations, company gatherings, holiday parties and more. There are two full bars with state of the art audio and video featuring an 80 and 34 inch HD wide-screen televisions.
I"m a big Union Street fan. Always have great service, from the host station to the wait staff to the bar. I'm a big fan of sandwiches and they have a great variety. Their menu, in general, has so many good choices. I've never had a negative experience here.
Great place for a first date, or night out with friends. Usually not to busy during the week so not hard to find seating, weekends are obviously more crowded. Overall the food is great and there are always new things on the menu to try. Service and staff have always been friendly and courteous to me and my guests. I always look forward to another night out at the Union Street Restaurant and Bar!
New menu was great. The staff was friendly and attentive.
I've always enjoyed my experience at Union St. On this occasion, though, My service was poor due my waitstaff providing wrong information to us on a few occasions and then my waitstaff leaving about 20 minutes after we sat down. While I know someone can have any number of reasons for having a tough day, the other staff ended up covering, but they did not seem organized around how to help us. They ended up leaving us alone in such way that we felt we were doing something wrong by asking for things like desert, or our bill. Then when there were errors on the bill (due to the incorrect information we were originally provided), we were told we did not ask the correct person our questions originally (how would we know not to ask our waitstaff questions about the kids menu?). I WILL be giving Union Street another chance, as my many prior experiences have been positive, but I expect that the staff will at least be honest and polite the next time I go. Food, as always, was delicious while also feeling decently healthy.
Our server had a problem and the rest of the staff somehow did not address the fact that she needs help.
The service here was absolutely horrible - the worst I've had in recent memory. Although the restaurant had only about 5 tables full, our waiter was extremely inattentive. We ordered appetizers as soon as we sat down, and they arrived quite a while later - at the same time as our meal. The waiter did not write down our orders and got both of them wrong. He forgot an add-on to the burger, and forgot my side order entirely. The food was average to very good, depending on the item, but we would never go back based on the poor service. After our dinners were brought out, no one came to check on our table - not once! I had to get up TWICE to tell our waiter that we needed to-go boxes and we needed the check! Our drinks were terrible - very medicinal tasting. So bad, in fact, that neither of us had more than a sip of our $11 cocktails. Of course, we couldn't send them back because our waiter was never around. This place has a lot of work to do if it wants to stay in business in the long run! Total bill for this horrible experience for two people: $92.53. Never having to go back: priceless
Service was not good. The waitress only waited on half of our 8 person party and when we asked about dessert (as it was a birthday celebration- and we saw a dessert with a candle 10 minutes before we asked) we were told they had no desserts.
Disappointing!! Especially with a $400.00 bill!!!
Great service - fun place to eat
Wonderful outdoor patio and restaurant has a lively vibe. Nice choices and the roasted Brussels sprout app delicious! Nice size indoor bar and service was excellent
We were a party of 11 and made a reservation for just after the restaurant opened on a Saturday. It was a beautiful morning and we were seated outside in the shade of an awning. The hostess and server were punctual, very nice and attentive. Drink orders were taken and quickly delivered. We ordered two portions of the Brussels sprouts for the table to share and asked that they be delivered with our meals. 6 of the 11 ordered the turkey club, two with a request that the mayo and bacon be on the side. Two had the bison burger, one the duck sandwich, one a flatbread and I had the cornflake chicken sandwich.
All of the food was very tasty (the fries are the bomb!) but the kitchen seemed to struggle to get the food out together. 8 of the dishes came out on two trays, but then I was 3/4 of the way finished with my sandwich before the last two entrees were delivered to the table. To the restaurant’s credit, the manager accompanied the delivery of the last items, apologized and told us that they would not be on our bill. So while I’m only giving 4 stars for service because of the delay and the fact that during it, no one spoke to us about it, I give an absolute 5 stars to how it was resolved.
Everyone enjoyed their meals. The turkey clubs are so generously portioned that two people could easily share one sandwich. Everyone at our table who ordered the club took half of it home, which worked well, as they were all training to NJ that afternoon and brought the rest of their sandwiches with the for snacks on the train.
The Duck sandwich was a hit, as were the bison burgers & flatbread. My sandwich would benefit from different bread (the toast is too dry & rough - it scratched up the roof of my mouth), a less flattened cutlet & less garnish. But overall? The me you was a win and we will definitely be back - soon, as the restaurant is two blocks from home. :)
I loved my lamb burger with the diverse toppings. My companion got a very special grilled cheese again with myriad unusual and amazing toppings. He particularly loved the challah bread. We sat on the patio so easy to converse but far from deadly even on a Wednesday night.
Food was very good and lots of good choices. Beer list was also extensive. Service however was very slow considering it was not crowded.
Excellent, we had a wonderful Father’s Day dinner with our family and our friends, highly recommend your place! Great food, great service, super yummy desserts too :-)
Bathrooms were horrendous, hopefully the food safety is on point and kitchen is cleaner
Food took forever and the appetizer was very quickly followed by dinner, despite being ordered 35 minutes apart. They were probably plucking feathers from the wings and catching the salmon
Service was decent: our waitress was attentive and polite
We didn't get sick from the food
The outdoor seating was really great
3-generation family group had a late lunch, celebrating together after an event at Boston College. The restaurant was practically empty when we arrived. Service was friendly but could have been a little more attentive - we got drinks fairly quickly but 15 minutes or more passed before server returned to take our app & entree orders. As others stated, menu was limited but we found something to appeal to everyone in our varied group and the food was delicious. We would definitely return if we were in the area again.
They changed the menu and doesn't have the wide array of selections they had before. The entire place needs an update.
Service was poor - it took over an hour to get our food. Usually I would be more forgiving but we told our waitress we were in a hurry because we were in Newton to see our friend run the marathon. Almost missed her run because of the wait.
It took almost 40 minutes to receive our meals. We ordered a burger and a rice bowl. Service was lousy. Restaurant was dark and appeared to still have birthday decorations hanging up from the previous night.
Service was very slow and got a few things wrong, our entrees came out at different times (2 came out 15 mins later than everyone else), and we were thirsty the entire meal (no waters for the table and refills on drinks took over an hour!). Not a good experience.
I saw varying reviews of this restaurant but the menu looked good and they had outdoor seating so we decided to give it a try. it started out well enough, the hostess and the waiter being very accommodating with our indecision about sitting outside. the wind finally got to be too much so we went inside. we should have suffered the wind! they were massively understaffed and we were forgotten about once we went inside, in spite of the fact that our same waiter was inside, downstairs serving patrons right next to us. we ended up getting our food to go, from a different server that we had to flag down, because it was taking so long. the food had been good enough. when I opened my food at home it was nothing like the menu had described! I will talk dirt about this place until the cows come home.
We had a good time at Union Street. Good burgers and good wings.
Worst dining experience ever. Basement dining is awful - smells like furnace fuel, wet clothes or pesticides. Service was slow and inconsistent. Wait staff was pleasant enough but we had to flag down several different staff to get anything. Will never go back. Heard it used to be a great restaurant before new management. Will never return.
My friend LOVES your Shrimp and Grits and the filet suits me so you were our choice on the way to experience HAMILTON!
We went to union street because the menu online looked great. My sister doesnt eat meat but they seemed to have plenty of options. When we got there (45 mins away) the menu was completely changed. The menu had nothing good on it anymore and the only vegetarian option was a veggie burger which we were informed they no longer had that night. Our server was very nice but our food took forever. 20 mins for our salads and 50 mins for our dinner which were mostly burgers. The restaurant only had 4 other parties in the whole place. The manager did take off my sisters meal (kids pizza since it was the only thing that didnt have meat) which was nice. Overall I wouldnt go there again because the food on the menu is not nearly as appealing as their old menu and the food came out so slowly.
We went on St. Patrick's Day at 4pm and apparently we were too close to shift change b/c our server was rushing us. There was hardly anyone there and we told her from the beginning we were going to enjoy a few drinks and order a few apps to start. We picked that time so we could enjoy it with our kids and not feel like we were taking the table from someone. When she rushed back for the 3rd time to ask if we were ready to order we placed an order. She didn't come back much after that and our half eaten food sat on the table after we were done and paid. The kids wanted dessert but we had many different messages about that..2 options, then there were no options and then the chef said he has some left over ice cream they could have. The place was not busy so should be no need to turn us over so quickly. At the end she told us it was shift change. She should have just asked us to cash out before we ordered so she could leave. The table next to us who were family members of the Irish step dancers didn’t have a problem like we did.
Our food was great, although service was very slow. Our food order came out in multiple parts and after 35 minutes my friend's steak tips finally were served.
Food was just so so. Nothing that makes me want to come back. A $15 cheeseburger and I could have easily skipped it and not remembered I had it. Staff were super nice but food not worth doing again unless I am there already.
Seated at 6:30. 1st 2 dinners I tried to order they were out of (on a Saturday night.) Ordered the Lamb Burger. Friend ordered the Steak tips. Took an Hour for them to come out. No apology. No nothing. Won’t be going back.
Food was mediocre - they got my order wrong and when I asked for a completely new plate because it was wrong they slapped a new burger on the same bun and
Wait staff was friendly and good. Manager did not do right by us.
We went for dinner on a Saturday night, this was one of only two Open Table restaurants in Newton that still had a table at our preferred time, when I made the reservation earlier in the day. Perhaps that should have been a clue.... It was very noisy between the crowd at the bar, the annoying "Muzak" (why do restaurants feel obligated to harass diners with this stuff? Who goes to a restaurant for the Muzak?), plus with a dozen large TV screens on the wall, each playing a different channel, the sensory overload was unpleasant. The waiter forgot to bring our appetizer order and had disappeared until entrees arrived. He was apologetic but what's done is done. The salmon was good, our friend's burger was OK, but my wife's dinner salad was basically a head of iceberg lettuce cut into quarters with some meat plus condiments sprinkled on top. Overall, a pretty poor performance by what should be the restaurant's "A" team on a Saturday night. It was my first time at Union Street and we won't go again.
Too loud, too many TV screens, too dark, too black, food was not good
Really good food, great service. Perfect for a casual bite.
Awesome place, great service, and spectacular food. It's a win all the way around. 😊
Great bar with a good vibe but the food was underwhelming. My chicken was dry and my husband said the short ribs were really chewy. We’d go back for drinks but probably not to eat
Our server was absolutely amazing! She was so welcoming and friendly.
The restaurant had overbooked itself on Parents Weekend and did not put more staff in place to compensate. We got our appetizers somewhat quickly but then barely saw our server. She finally returned to tell us the kitchen was backed up. We had to flag her down 45 minutes later for an update. Our appetizer plates were still sitting on our table. She didn’t know when our food was coming out, and the manager whom we spoke too didn’t know either. Just as we were about to leave, the food arrived. Three of the 6 orders were wrong or had missing components. The restaurant did not charge us for the dinners, however. We didn’t blame the waitress for the back up in the kitchen but we did feel she could have cleared the table in the 90 minutes between the time we finished the apps and our dinners finally arrived. The manager could have been more proactive as well. It wasn’t the back up that lost us as much as their poor handling of it.
The food was terrible. Mussels were foul tasting and the crispy fish tacos were not crispy. My friend and I were disappointed. Our waitress was very nice.
Good local hang-out.
Solid, dependable good food, beer and service.
Their hamburger and fish tacos are some of Union Street’s best dishes.
Nachos are not bad; wine list could use some improvement. I’d steer clear of their fish sandwich. It’s fairly bland.
Menu has changed with new ownership and prices are high! Too high... $15 for a burger and fries. Food was average to good. We were there at lunch and the place was empty so it was nice and quiet, and servers were attentive and hospitable.
