Amazing! Our waiter was so sweet, and the food was absolutely incredible.
Wonderful spring greens, halibut, sunny window. Dining perfection.
Union is a treat. Mothers Day dinner was great. I went with my parents and saw families and several mother/(grand)son pairs. Atmosphere is delightful and wait staff attentive, friendly and professional. For starters the Brussels sprouts and beet salad were amazing. Scallops entree absolutely delicious. Rib eye a bit disappointing--not as tender and flavorful as expected, given the other dishes. Chocolate dessert was outstanding, deconstructed cheese cake a bit too modern for my old fashioned father. Bar list is extensive. Many fun details, newspaper clipping doilies and other press related touches. Altogether a lovely evening.
Great place for brunch and dinner. Love the food and vibe.
We have eaten at Union many times and love it! On our last visit we had a waitress who definitely needed more experience. We mentioned her in our last review. When we were preparing to leave last Saturday evening our waitress presented us with a dessert box to apologize for our last visit. So thoughtful!
Always a treat!! Service and food exceeded our expectations
We usually thoroughly enjoy dining at the Union. This time we did not like our dinners as much.
Great Brunch! Service was great . We both had red flannel hash and it was delicious.
Excellent service, delicious brunch and convenient location.
My husband and I dined here for our first night away in a year. We researched all the options and chose Union, which was a great decision! The food was fantastic- the service good. Creative and delicious desserts and perfect execution of our meals. The best New we’ve had in a long time!
Really wonderful food, great service with wine pairings.
Very slow service, 50 mins before our entree arrived. The crab pasta was salty, too much pancetta, and almost no crab—I searched hard!
We found the food to be just unique enough---ie an imaginative chef.
Portions were large, more than we really wanted.
Service was very good, attentive but not invasve.
Would highly recommend, and will return.
We ordered most of the appetizers for dinner to share and it did not disappoint
Serve was quick and friendly
Highly recommended for dinner
One of the top restaurants in Portland. Creative dishes and top notch service in the heart of the city.
I eat here often. Saturday was excellent as always!
Salmon was over cooked steak was perfect.
I had the daily lunch special on Thursday and each item was scumptious! I think this is going to be a new favorite place for me!
My dish was much too salty. I expected some level of salt given the dish ( Cod, clams, sausage), but the broth was just too salty. I couldn't eat the green end of bok choy b/c saturated with excessively salty broth. I think the prices also were a little high. The host/waiters were absolutely delightful!!!
I came alone for dinner and the staff made me feel so welcome! The food was exquisite. The homemade bread for the evening was anadama: so delicious with a perfect crust and crumb. The fried goat cheese with crostini and honey roasted garlic was scrumptious. Their crispy Brussels sprouts were unique and addictive (though you may want to ask them to put the aoli on the side as some of the individual sprouts ended up with a bit too much on them). Their green apple brûlée was creative, beautiful and so tasty! Thanks for a wonderful meal. I will definitely return next time I am in Portland.
Location is right across the street from Merrill Auditorium, so perfect for pre theater dinner. Particularly recommend the veggie sides - Brussels Sprout dish excellent. And very good gelato nice for a finish without being heavy to make you sleepy during the show. Don't miss the hotel lobby with its press room motif.
We had dinner here before an event at Merrill. We picked it because of the interesting menu. It started off with Anadama bread which is one of my favorites, so they had my attention right off the bat. In our group we had the scallops, the pot roast and the lamb. We also sampled the oxtail marmalade and shirred egg. It was all amazing. I was impressed by the way the tastes and textures all came together. The sorbet and the semifreddo were delicious. The only slight disappointment- the carrot cake was a little dry. This place is "all that and an bag of chips"!
Lovely modern/rustic restaurant! Wonderful food and fun drink menu.
Great place, great food and wonderful service!
This Easter Brunch meal was simply MEH at best. I made reservations ahead of time for 2 people and the found that our son could be home for Easter and be with us. Unfortunately Union would not accommodate a third for the reservation so I sent my wife and son for breakfast and I stayed at work.
They had a nice brunch but had expected a more spring and celebratory selection. They both selected eggs benedict, with my wife having hers with lobster. Both dishes were tasty but lacked garnish - it was one strawberry and the eggs. No greens - no nothing. The lobster benedict had an up charge of 12 dollars which was fine, if you could find the lobster. It was a very small claw for the the entire plate.
The bloody mary was uninspiring as well.
We have been to Union many times for dinner and have never been disappointed. With so many places to enjoy brunch in Portland, I am afraid Union should be left for dinner only.
Had gone to show at Merrill Auditorium
loved my meal the first time, couldn’t wait to go back and have the same meal, sad to say it wasn’t a repeat performance for Union.
When in Maine - Eat Lobster or as the locals say eat lobsta!
In an omelet or in a bun, with a cat or just for fun!
Both the service and the food were excellent. We sat and talked and never felt rushed even though the restaurant filled up. Their small bites Brussel sprouts were recommended by our waiter and they were a great hit.
Service was truly fantastic - just the right amount of attention without being overbearing. Both small and large plates were delicious - imaginative, fresh and perfect for sharing. Dessert plate of cookies and sweets was ok, but fell short compared to the other 2 courses.
The menu changes constantly so you can't go by what others ordered. Just get what's best for the day. Seared scallops were outstanding but only got 3. They were medium to large though.
My son and I went to Union for a late night dinner after Trevor Noah at a Merrill Auditorium. So so good! Service was quick and attentive. We had the Brussels sprouts (seriously amazing, and it could have been my whole meal), my son had the salmon (a little small in portion, and unexpectedly curry-based), and I had the pot roast (tender and delicious with very generous portions). For dessert he had the candies and cookies (fine), and I had the pumpkin semifreddo—decadent and yummy. We would definitely go back again!
Excellent food, portions small.
I met up with a girlfriend who was staying at the hotel and we had a fabulous dinner. I am Vegetarian and I enjoyed the Tofu dinner very much. My friend is a very particular eater and she raved about her meal. Ryan was our server and he worked with the chef to make sure our needs were met; he was very thoughtful and solicitous...really wonderful! My husband and I always dine there before our events at the Merrill. We are so grateful that you cater to our Vegetarian tastes and all the staff is warm, welcoming and top notch professionals!
My husband and I were in Portland for a weekend trip from New York City. The food here is amazing and the portion sizes are just right. Very uniques dishes with modern surprises and extremely refined taste combinations. Excellent service and extremely reasonably priced wine list.
Previous trips have always been 5 star. The food was excellent as always, but the service was lacking. The server didn't seem to know the dishes he was delivering, barely said anything to us, and seemed rather uncomfortable. On top of that, the restaurant was about 90% empty and another server or food runner brought out a couple of the courses. That said, we tipped appropriately even though it seemed too much, and will be back, hopefully with a different server.
Had a great brunch before the symphony. Wait staff was wonderful and the brunch menu with specials gave us great choices. We will return again
A disappointing meal for all 4 of us! We've eaten there numerous times over the past 4-5 years, usually with friends. Usually there are some appealing dishes on the brunch menu, but not so much this time. We ordered 4 different dishes; my spinach and mushroom meal had no flavor; my husband's avocado toast had so much bread it drowned out the other ingredients; the Eggs Benedict had a too-thick bread element; the French Toast was pretty good.
THE best restaurant north of Boston and a top ten beyond that! Service is outstanding, food is not only artistically presented, it is consistently excellent!
