About Union Oyster House

The Union Oyster House, located on the Freedom Trail, near Faneuil Hall, enjoys the unique distinction of being America's oldest restaurant. The Boston fixture, housed in a building dating back to pre-revolutionary days, started serving food in 1826 and has continued ever since with the stalls and oyster bar, where Daniel Webster was a constant customer, in their original positions.

Over priced food for the quality of it. Had better seafood in more quaint and less expensive places. High prive for the name, nothing more.

My husband and I came here for New Year’s Eve. The best part of the meal was the clam chowder and corn bread. After that, the entrees were disappointing and over-priced. My fried seafood platter was more French Fries than seafood, and the tasted greasy and not fresh- like something you could get from the frozen food section at Costcos. My husband’s broiled seafood platter was better but could have used more seasoning. Our server was very attentive, however, despite being very busy that night. Nearby guests appear to enjoy the raw oysters- we’re not raw oyster eaters so maybe we should have chosen a different spot. We would probably not return given all the other good seafood restaurants nearby.

Another great visit. We had Saturday reservations for 5 pm and were seated within minutes of that time. Server was prompt and attentive. Took our drink order, brought cornbread and took appetizer order then returned for dinner order.
The food was terrific. We ordered mussels and steamers for appetizers. The mussels were very good and the steamed clams were perfect. Two in our party ordered the seafood medley with rice (instead of pasta). Both loved it and the portion was large. Another ordered lobster ravioli which was delicious. Portion was not very large but he said it was perfect size due to the richness. I ordered the lobster scampi. You can upsize to a large lobster but I stayed with standard medium lobster and it was plenty. Not to mention delicious. Service was great. Obviously in an historic restaurant in Boston it can be a bit pricey which is why I rated 3 stars for value. You can get similar meals in NH or ME for less than $220 for 4 before tip ($22 for 2 drinks). So we spent 270-ish for 4 people. Totally worth it though. Take your time and appreciate the atmosphere and imagine dining st the very bar that Daniel Webster used to frequent or in booth #18 where JFK used to read the paper every Sunday afternoon. Great place.

I have been here 50 times over the years and always love the ambiance, authenticity and food. However, the food this time around was just good vs excellent. It was a crazy busy day nonetheless, when you are paying good money, there are no excuses.

I hope they get the message.

Our visit to the Oyster House was just ok and with the North End right around the corner - you would be MUCH better off going to one of the many delicious restaurants there. It was a little annoying that the wine selection is different depending on which floor you end up sitting on. At the main floor bar, great selection of wine. On the second floor, really bad wine selection. If I had known, I would have purchased another glass and taken it to my table. Food was just ok. Nothing too great.

Excellent food was diminished by below average service. Also, experience could have been improved with some interaction with a floor manager or supervisor as a very rowdy and obnoxious party of four was allowed to have a frat boy reunion to the point where my spouse and I could not hear each other speak.

Over priced and the food was very disappointing...the scallops and shrimp were floating in a heavy cream sauce, way too much sauce couldn't taste the seafood,
Honestly I had enough after 2 or 3 bites.
It would be nice if they could offer some updated dishes and healthier options. We will not be back.

I normally love this restaurant but my last visit was a huge disappointment. The beer was warm, the oysters were barely oysters they were so small and expensive. The swordfish looked disgusting. My husband barely ate it. I wouldn’t go back anytime soon.

Food was outrageously expensive for a pathetic portion size. My girlfriend got exactly 4 shrimp and 4 scallops for $30 and I got only about 12 fried clams for the same price. Worst of all was the service. Wait staff halfheartedly acknowledged a request to check with the chef regarding a food allergy at our table, which was not confidence inspiring.

Only positive from this night was the Christmas music playing in the background, which was a nice touch given the time of year.

I grew up in the Boston area and have eaten at the Union Oyster House many times. Its sad to see a classic Boston restaurant become just another tourist trap. Bottom line, if you want a nice seafood dining experience in the same area as the Union Oyster House, go to Legal Seafood by the aquarium. Better food, better portions, professional staff, and an all around more enjoyable experience. Needless to say, we will not be going back to Union Oyster House.

An ok dining experience. Nice waiter. More on the touristy side with prices to reflect from the lunch menu. Clam chowder was good but imagine you can find amazing in Boston. Was just too cold and not enough time to make that happen.

This felt like a typical tourist restaurant. While cozy and full of history, the food was just “good” at best. I’d check out the bar to see the inside, but dine elsewhere.

Much to our dismay my wife and I went for an anniversary and birthdays (same week) dinner travelling from Toronto to Boston and went out of our way to go to union oyster house on word it was the best.Sadly the only tasteful part of the meal was the complimentary cornbread. After spending the equivalent of $200 CDN we both found out meals bland and my wife could not even finish her Bloody Mary drink as the bartender put cocktail sauce in it

Stephanie our server was awesome. The food was delicious and better than we expected even. If you’re looking for a great seafood place that is casual and laid back this is the place to go. The Lobster Ravioli is a great appetizer. My wife loved the oysters. The seafood Newberg was perfect!

great service, great food as always, great chowder, clams casino and martinis-we always stop here on any trips we make to Boston from our home in central mass--we take the train to North Station and its an easy walk to UOH- we've always had the same thing as starters: a bowl of your great chowder, bread, and a superb gin martini-have been doing this for 25 years or so-often, but not always, we'll follow it if we're there in the evening, with an appetizer or two-at our age a terrific meal-many thanks to your chefs and your always superb wait staff
