Service was great. Fillet Minion tasted like pot roast. Seafood was not bad. Great cornbread!
Food was good, service was so-so (waitress had a little case of the grumps — i.e. when asking about the Harpoon draft selections, “can you tell me about the Harpoon dark vs the IPA?” “Um it’s dark”. They sat us at a table we barely fit in, but I guess it helped us eat less :) overall cool atmosphere.
Go for the atmosphere. Eat somewhere else. The building is super cool and full of Boston history. It’s a charming place. Poke around the various corners, look at the pictures, and read the history.
The food is expensive and generally ranges from acceptable to really bad. Don’t bother with the oysters. You’d think a place called “Union Oyster House” would know how to open them. They might have at some point but they don’t know. They open them vertically by sticking a knife in one end and banging the knife handle on a brick. The delicious oysters juice spills out, the oyster is cut. Often a bunch of shell parts remain. They solve that by rinsing the oysters in tap water. The end result is a glob that tastes mostly of mud and chlorine, and for which they have the temerity to change $3.
The rest of the food is priced similarly. From $17 for fish and chips to $29 for a basic entree that’s not particularly well made. E.g. lobsters are steamed, expensive, and tasteless. The place clearly makes its living based on its history because it’s food is no better than a low-end chain restaurant.
My suggestion is to go for lunch, have a bowl of chowder, and then go to a place with good food for dinner. There are plenty of those in Boston.
Go to Union if you want a memorable dining experience! Enough said.

My son and I dropped in before a Bruins game. Found everything to be to our liking. Very old New Englandish but that's exactly why we went. Food great. Wait person was fine. Would have to be a great find for seafood loving visitors looking old school Boston.
Everything about Union Oyster House, we loved. The décor, the JFK booth, the old wood. The clam chowder was delicious, the various lobster dishes were also delicious, but I think the best of all was the warm Indian pudding for dessert.
Union Oyster House was the highlight of our Boston trip! Amazing food, ambiance, and even better service from Stephanie! She made us laugh, and was on her “A” game. I highly recommend this place and Stephanie for a true Boston experience!
I loved everything about this place! Such a cool atmosphere and interesting history. My husband and I each got a cup of clam chowder, which was outstanding. For dinner, I had the swordfish which was better than I could've imagined - my husband got lobster and was very pleased. We will definitely go back to Union Oyster House every time we're in Boston.

The food is decent, but definitely not worth the price. The atmosphere and history of the place is cool, so it's worth a trip. I would just stick to something on the small side or a dessert. The Indian pudding was pretty good.

I always wanted to get to this restaurant in Boston coming from the Midwest and based on recommendations from my co-workers in Cambridge, MA. Well worth it. Notable landmark, great venue (relaxed, historic, charming, vintage); great service and super good seafood! We went late (8:30 PM reservation) but was moderately busy and still humming.
First visit to Boston, fantastic steamed lobster. My daughter ordered mushroom ravioli. They were both excellent. Service was perfect

One of our traditional stops when we come to Boston. Good food, great fun. Servers always attentive to needs, and happy to help keep things moving if know you have plans after lunch/dinner.
This is a classic and historic restaurant not to be missed. It dates back to 1826and we were fortunate to sit in one of the original wooden booths on the second floor. The food is very good and reasonably priced. While,popular with,tourists it is also a hangout for locals too. The service was outstanding and as busy as it is they honored our reservation right on time.
Very pleasant experience with a friendly and helpful waitress and a wonderful meal. Would recommend this restaurant to anyone.

The service was excellent. The cornbread and clam chowder was so delicious. The historical restaurant was wonderful. The haddock was perfect.
Overpriced tourist trap. Not the quality of seafood you would expect from that area. There are better places in Boston for seafood including Atlantic Fish. Stay away from this place. It’s an old dump. Portions are very small. You will be hungry when you leave and your wallet will be short at least 100.00 for two not including drinks!
We had the most wicked awesome time ever!!! Stephanie was freaking amazing - the best ever. Her side kick Bobby was pretty cool too. Everyone there treated us like we were VIP’s. The food was AMAZING!!!! We were celebrating 2 birthdays and they went above and beyond what was expected or needed. Highly recommended this place to anyone!!!

25 minute delay in honoring our reservation with no apology or explanation. Horrible customer service.
Was so excited to take my family here. Cocktail was good and the cornbread was fantastic. However, the rest of the meal was very disappointing. We had a variety of dishes (as there were 4 of us) and none of us were overly impressed. The price for quality was way off. This restaurant maybe the oldest restaurant in Boston but they have really let their quality slide. Stop in for a drink to say you’ve been, but then find some place else to eat.
Maybe it’s not the right time for lobster or oyster but the restaurant did a great job on cooking! Except for the cakes served before meal, everything is good!
I had an absolutely wonderful time at the Union Oyster House. Anton and Dave (the shuckers) were both so incredibly friendly and had fantastic senses of humor. The oysters were fresh and I would recommend the chowder as well. The next time I am in Boston, I will absolutely come back here!

Union Oyster House was a "must" on our list to tour while in Boston! We enjoyed the history throughout the restaurant, as well as the food & service!
This was my second visit to this historic restaurant. The fish is very fresh and the wait staff very friendly and knowledgeable. Thanks Ira for making our visit so enjoyable.
