Worth it for the experience of dining in the oldest continually operating restaurant in the US. But the food is only so-so. Fun atmosphere and good for kids.

Skip this. Grossly overrated. We had a reservation for outside - but when we arrived they asked if we still wanted to sit outside or move inside. Because it was warmer and muggier than we’d expected, we said inside. Our reservation was for 5, 2 adults, 3 teenagers, for 12:45. They sat us at one of their smaller, older booths. We are not short people. 6” son and 6’2” dad. To say we were uncomfortable…what made it even more disappointing was the mostly empty dining room, with tables and chairs and plenty of space, that we walked by when we headed to the bathrooms. Our waitress was competent - not warm or helpful. Didn’t try and upsell us or tell us a single thing about the oldest restaurant in the nation. Such a disappointing way to burn $159. We should have listened to our incredible hosts at our hotel that said to skip our reservation…and Open Table - I’d gladly send an private note if I thought it would make a difference or believed they read them…

I was disappointed by our recent experience. My son and I had come here in 2019 and loved it, so I just brought my family of four here on our trip to Boston. We were seated right next to the kitchen doors and yet we had empty dishes left on our table for an unreasonable amount of time, even after the server attended to something else we needed like water. The food was fine, not outstanding for the price. The cocktails were the best thing we had, but at $18 we only had one. However, the server didn’t even ask if we wanted another. I will note that my son had the Thai mussels special and it was very good. This was our one must-do reservation on the trip and I felt like we were let down.

i love this restaurant in so so many ways - the history is extraordinary and the aesthetic is authentic and tells the story. I love the menu - it is exactly what you want it to be with classic Yankee fare. The service was very good and i think the people were terrific, friendly and responsive. The food was not good - maybe we had a bad night. the clam chowder lacked flavor, had no clams and the potatoes were not fully cooked; the calamari was flavorless, the crab cakes were not hot, the mussels had no taste, the lobster roll was soggy. The corn bread was excellent, as were the baked beans - but most of the food was very poor. So sorry to share. what's ironic - i would probably go back for everything else and simply eat the beans and cornbread.

Our server Caroline was superb! The Clam Chowder and Crab Cakes delicious. Oysters on the half shell were the best my son has eaten

The food here was very good! However I was frustrated that I did not receive help from the staff to validate my parking. The website states they validate at the Clinton Street garage, where I parked. However the website does not state you need to pre-book and pre-pay for this garage before coming to the restaurant. The hostess was unable to help me get validation from the garage which frustrated me. If you are planning to park here, make sure you pre-book a spot at the garage first as the staff does not know how to get validation otherwise.
