my dinner here totally changed my mind about sashimi
We had to wait 15-20 mins after our reservation we made a week prior, Service was great but I thought the food wasn’t up to par with the the cost.
Stunning restaurant that have to be on every Boston resident and visitor list! Every detail from arrival was great, food was incredible. Well worth the visit!
An upscale sushi/Asian fusion bar and restaurant with an exquisite selection of unique Japanese/Asian style seafood. The space is small, and seating tightly packed. Some of the seating is at a communal high top table which is less than intimate. Sitting at the bar actually is not bad for dining. The noise level is an issue if you’re going somewhere to try and have an intimate discussion, however if you’re in the mood to party and just hang out it’s great. I really can’t say enough about the food on the menu, which is fantastic, and the chef deserves to be commended.
We ate at Uni about 6 years ago and it was a wonderful experience. What happened?
From the moment we walked in it was a chaotic, noisy scene. We were happy to be seated in the quitter downstairs sushi bare area. Our waiter was friendly, but was upselling and not answering our questions about the menu openly and truthfully. When I ask,”what is being served as Omacase this evening?”, I don’t want to be toldit’s at the Sushi Chef’s whim. We also saw a lot more of our waiter’s butt than was necessary because of the seating arrangement and tightness of tables.
When the Omacase finally arrived, it was all like chewy plastic. There was not a single piece of special, sushi grade fish. It was also standard, classic/boring sushi fare. Fluke, Eel, Egg, . . . not a single piece of top grade or specially prepared sushi.
Having eaten in some very special sushi restaurants from Hawaii to New York, I found Uni today a big disappointment. I also brought a friend telling her how good it was going to be and that it is the best sushi bar in Boston. NOT!
The food here is amazing! They are small plates and very pricey, so keep that in mind if you're really hungry. The staff could not have been nicer or more accommodating. Our waitress knew the menu very well and was able to confidently answer all our questions. My only complaint is the noise level. The music is SO loud, you really cannot have a decent conversation with your party. For reference, I may be considered "old" at 46 (lol) so perhaps younger diners enjoy that ambiance. Glad we tried it but probably won't return.
Hi Michelle! Thank you for the review and we are thrilled to hear you enjoyed the food and service during your dinner. We are happy to make a note in your profile that you prefer a quieter table and arrange this for you next visit. Hope we are able to welcome you back to UNI soon. - The UNI Team.
Very overpriced for what you get. There is nothing special about the rolls. Very small portions for the price. The ambiance isn't "cool" enough to justify the price. Service was spotty and they forgot one of our orders.
It was ok. The food was pretty good but I felt it lacked imagination. I imagine it would have been much better if the service had been better. Our server seemed disinterested and towards the end didn’t bother to ask if we wanted more food or even desserts. Drinks took forever to come! All in all we’re not rushing back. O ya Blows this place away!
I love it there. One of my favorites. Wish it was a little more mellow, slower for such a delicious, special dinner. A little more explanation, recommendation, slow, logical pace than what feels like a bit of quick turnover bring it out when it’s ready kind of meal/vibe.
Quality and food went downhill since the last time I was here.
Food was the best sushi I have ever had in Boston. Definitely pricey though, so make sure it's for a special occasion!
Great place for a special dinner
Incredible food, fresh ingredients, beautifully executed in a great environment. Our server was very knowledgeable and helpful. Expensive, but worth it!
Just delicious food! New ways of experiencing nigiri / sashimi with so many levels of tastes in one dish. So fresh & full of innovation.
Great service. Amazing food!!
Waiting time for food is really long. The food is good, but it is not as impressive and is not worth the value.
Enjoyed a date there - all the food was delicious, with good presentation; proactive staff catered to our needs before being asked; good drink selection matched the food.
Hello! Thanks so much for the kind words, we are thrilled to hear you enjoyed your experience with us. Hope to have you back in again soon. - The UNI Team
Most things we had were excellent tasting. The waitstaff was excellent! Portions were on the smaller side, especially for the price they were charging. I don’t mind paying for quality, but I don’t believe in leaving hungry after a $300 meal for 2.
Everything we had was absolutely delicious especially the chicken and waffles
Hello! So happy to hear you enjoyed your dinner especially the chicken and waffles, it's one of our favorites as well! - The UNI Team
This was another fabulous experience at Uni. We highly recommend the Chef’s tasting menu. It also pair well with the same flight. So many
memorable tastes. The Uni Spoon is one f many standouts. This restaurant is perfect for a special occasion or get together with friends.
a very nice evening , very good service, quality and presentation of the food ........ excellent !!
Seated half an hour late after our reservation time to celebrate a 30th birthday, and were eventually seated at the bar—even though we requested a private table ahead of time. By the time we were seated, the kitchen was no longer offering omakase, which is the reason we came to Uni in the first place. Simply put, my idea of a romantic birthday celebration didn’t involve being shoved at the end of a crowded bar to order sushi a la carte.
Way overpriced for mediocre food. 2nd visit, and the food and service weren’t as good as the first time. Won’t be returning.
Wonderful experience. Artful food, great service
Great food slightly over priced but top quality only let down service failed on the last minute by forgetting my dish however would I go back Yes yes yes
Second to None! We are never disappointed in the quality, creativity and outstanding service from knowledgeable staff. Thank You!
We had a great experience this week at uni. Right from the second we stepped in the door, warm, welcoming and over the top accommodating. The food and service were excellent. We will be back soon!
The food is creative, delicious and exquisite. A memorable meal, with superb service. I will definitely return - either alone again (naturally) or with family and friends.
Fantastic food - great time all around
Perfect host and setting, tastefully different and incredible flavors of all the dishes . The wait staff is fully trained to explain the dishes and recommend .
Staff is absolutely amazing and attentive. Our server gave us great recommendations. Food is beyond phenomenal. Thank you for a very special evening. We can’t wait to come back!
Innovative approach to sushi and sashimi. If you are looking for an artistic food experience that delights the palette and indulges your tastebuds, this is the place to go!
Low hygiene (found hair inside food)
Service absent or chaotic: the food began to arrive before the initial cocktails, the wine arrived towards the end of the dinner.
The waiters apologised and didn’t charge the beverages and the dish with the hair, they were kind but this didn’t solve that we had a bad dinner.
Besides, the local was excessively loud
Finally, the food was nothing of special and the portions were really small.
Food is excellent and very creative. Also very expensive but worth a visit for sure. Raw fish is fantastic and fresh. Brussels sprouts were really good too!
We made reservations and despite it being half empty the host tried to seat us at the sushi bar. My date was not okay with this...and a couple behind us was actually turned away despite the place never filling up while we were there. A manager did overrule the decision a few mins later but it was an unfortunate start to the meal. That said, the food was delicious, the wait staff friendly, knowledgable and attentive and because of this I would say overall the place is a hidden gem despite the rocky start. Def worth a try although be prepared, 2 drinke each and the bill was $250 with tip, but what do you expect for Back Bay...
Delicious, creative fusion sushi. They seemingly forgot the appetizer we ordered first, as it arrived 15 minutes after everything else was finished, but the waiter and kitchen were attentive to avoiding a food allergy we had raised.
Although the menu is pretty confusing, the server was helpful even though she tended to recommend only the highest priced items. The food is absolutely delicious and the service was great. The main drawback was the noise. We were seated near the bar and once the music got going, it was impossible to hear.
Great food and atmosphere.
We thought, for the price, the place was clearly over-rated. The waitress was nice but the food came in at no particular order and the last dish came at least 30 minutes after everything had already come in. The dishes that you expect to be of a good size (from the price of the dish and the description) turned out to be really small in proportion.
We were not even impressed by the taste as there was too much salt in some dishes (tartar comes to mind). The presentation was nice but that's where we would have to stop. Not a place to repeat!
