Contemporary Asian
Serving inventive Japanese fusion cuisine using the freshest seafood from Tokyo’s famed Tsukiji market and local New England fishermen, and borrowing influence from the streets of Tokyo, Shanghai, Singapore, Bangkok and Bangladesh, Uni is the evolution of Ken Oringer’s intimate sashimi bar of the same name, which expanded into the former Clio space with Executive Chef/Partner Tony Messina at its helm in early 2016.

I was very excited to be going to UNI. Getting a reservation on a weekend is tough. Upon walking in , one is struck by the noise level.. really loud... even hard to give your name to the hostess. They were really nice to us because a a party of two ..it looked like we were going to sentenced to a dining death in the middle of the communal table. Luckily, 2 seats at the sushi bar opened up and we wedged into there... really tight. The food was good. It was hard to navigate the menu. The waitress was helpful but you could tell she was in a hurry.. Drinks were cool ... not cold and served in these little tiny glasses. The sushi bar seats where we sat had no backs, so it became very uncomfortable after a while.... after an hour my back stated to hurt so I would stand to stretch. .. It was fun , but not amazing.

Impressive food & service. I had just gotten into town and made a last minute reservation that they were able to accommodate and coat check my luggage to get it out of the way. Sat at the bar and enjoyed cocktails, a few small plates, and a mezcal for dessert from the extensive spirits selection. John Ross provided excellent service and assistance in navigating the menu, and I loved the atmosphere and music selection (you can never go wrong with some old school hip hop). Will be back in town in a couple weeks and can't wait to return to try some late night food!

Omakase! What a dining experience. The uni, quail egg, caviar ‘spoon’ & black truffle ramen were two highlights, but the whole evening was foodie heaven!

Came to Uni for the first time for Valentine's Day and was completely blown away by the amazing food, attentive service, and fun and exciting atmosphere. We enjoyed the sea urchin platter which comes with sliced lime, radish, pomegranate, and nori wraps, beautifully crafted and interesting cocktails, and a variety of sashimi and nigiri. The sea bream melts in your mouth and the butterfish is delicate and delicious in a citrusy broth. Our knowledgeable and friendly server recommended a magnificent sake that we absolutely loved. We will definitely be back again soon to explore more of what this Boston gem has to offer.

Food was not only excellent, but unusual and really a great experience overall. Service was outstanding. They venue is small and loud, so be prepared for that. If you can score a seat at the lower sushi bar or dining area it is much quieter. Can't wait to go back.

Marc A. was a great waiter who, along with the rest of the staff, kept our 15-course Omakase moving along pleasantly. The table next to us was fairly obnoxious and Marc kept us out of their waves of craziness. He was always kind to them despite their lack of tact. And then he was able to work with us with such professionalism and joy. Great wine and cocktail recommendations too!

I'm a big fan of restauranteur behind UNI (Ken Oringer) and this restaurant placed number 1 at Boston's best restaurant of 2018. Everything about this place is perfect and unbelievable.

I had the best spicy tuna and foie gras tataki with aji Amarillo, pear and black walnut. Hotate live scallop, Maguro - bluefin tuna, and Toro-fatty tuna are also at its best.

Will definitely come back!

We were expecting a little fancier, a la Clio. It was also very loud and I don't remember requesting to sit at sushi bar (was that an option on Open Table?). The makimono rolls were just okay. But the nigiri was delicious, as were the two hot dishes we tried. Were we to go again we would probably order of the Chef's menu or order anything but the makimono. To be frank, we went for my birthday and it could have been a better experience.

Food was tasty but service was terrible. After being seated they took our drink order, and we waited 20 minutes to get them. They sat a table next to us who got drinks and food before I got my first drink. It was extremely loud could barely have a conversation, I couldn't even hear the food servers describe the food on our plates at all. Very disappointing for a James Beard nominated restaurant. Perhaps I don't understand city dining??

From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with warmth and smiles from the staff. The cocktails were superb and the food was out of this world. Our server, the bartenders, hosts, managers, and food runners were all clearly professionals and it’s easy to see why Uni is one of the best restaurants in Boston.

The waitress and all there helped to make our (plan B due to weather) Anniversary special. The food was incredible and delicious. Particularly the sashimi plates, the lobster blt, the cauliflower and celery root dish. Really all was exceptional. And the yuzu sake and sour patch treats at the end were lovely.

We were disappointed in Uni. This was probably our third visit, and while the room is lively and there's a young, fun vibe there, the food was remarkably tasteless; I honestly couldn't tell you what the flavors were in the very expensive makimono and sushi because they were bland. It's very expensive for what it is.

Let's get this out of the way first: the sushi omakase at Uni is *fantastic*. Creative, delicious, fresh, and almost never-ending in its variety and number of dishes. (I lost count but maybe there were 15?) Everything from Uni's signature "uni spoon" (uni, roe, yuzu, quail egg) to the nigiri sampler was wonderful. The piece de resistance? Slices of the finest raw wagyu beef, with a 600-degree hot stone to cook it on and four different salt options to dip it in. (Some of the "fusion elements" can get a bit over the top, and it might not be for everyone -- if you prefer your sushi super-traditional, this is probably not the place for you.) (I wanted to upload more pictures but it seems I can only choose one and it can't be too big... hey, opentable, how about if you automatically resize the photos instead of expecting me to fool with photo formats to give you my photos for free??)

The service is also very good -- a little on the slow side (it took quite a while from ordering until we got our first dish, and every once in a while there would be an inexplicable 15-minute lag between courses) but friendly and efficient.

But the noise. (Oh, the noise, noise, noise, noise!) I can't remember the last time I was in such a loud restaurant. The space is loud to start with, especially on a Friday night, and the music is just BLARING incessantly. I asked a couple of times whether it could be turned down, but there was no readily apparent effect. Even my daughter and I, sitting side by side, could barely hear each other speak, and it was practically impossible to carry on a conversation with my husband on the other side of the table.

I am not sure whether I'll go back. I truly loved the food. I truly hated the ambiance. Your mileage may vary.

I never write OpenTable restaurant reviews. This is my first. But my husband and I were blown away by Uni. Every plate was delicious. Our server was friendly, helpful, and attentive without being fussy or intrusive. And the restaurant felt both cozy and modern, in a Japanese-aesthetic. Uni delivers five-star quality food without the typical five-star formality.
