Ummo is a contemporary Italian restaurant in River North. Compared to the other Italian spots nearby, Ummo is much more innovative from atmosphere to menu. I’ve been three times and will go again. Ummo has two floors, with drastically different atmospheres. Floor 1 is the dim lit ultra contemporary floor. Floor 2 is a huge loft with metal beams, high ceilings, ceiling light, and a pool table in the middle of the room. For the best experience, go for the loft. We went with a group and had a blast playing pool between bites. Food is traditional with bigger creative twists. Nothing tastes exactly like you’d expect. Some of the twists pay off. Some don’t. While nothing was exceptional, everything is good and it’s nice to have something different. Across my visits I’ve ordered BURRATA E PROSCIUTTO BOLOGNESE MEATBALLS MAFALDINE CACIO E PEPE MOLE CAPPELLACCI - Table standout LASAGNA ALLA BOLOGNESE FIORENTINE CHICKEN - Table standout Focaccia - Hard pass BRANZINO ALLA SICILIANA - Good but there are better things.

The service was attentive, our waitress gave us excellent suggestions without trying to upsell us which we appreciated. Our Market Oysters, Calabrian Chili Oil, Green Apple, Buttermilk-Dill Oil (4 for $18) were artfully presented and tasted fresh although they were tiny. The handmade Pastas were exceptional. Our Lamb Tortelli of Stuffed Tortelli, Lamb Belly Ragù, Fresh Ricotta, Mint Pesto, Pecorino Romano ($27) and Seafood Chitarra of Chitarra-style Pasta, Lobster Cream, Scallops, Mussels, Prawns, Chives, Butter, and Lemon ($32) were both outstanding, exquisitely tender and boldly flavored. Ummo also gave us a beautiful Vanilla Sponge Cake layered with Raspberry Jam (?) topped with Vanilla Frosting and Blueberries as a complimentary birthday dessert. Our other dessert of Ummo Ferrero, Dark Chocolate Cream, Toasted Hazelnuts, Hazelnut Gianduja, Vanilla & Chocolate Nitro Drops, Frangelico Jelly ($18) was gorgeous. The ambience was dark and moody with lots of striking Jazz posters and beautiful coffee table books.

Overall good dining experience. Tasty appetizers. The Seafood Chitarra seafood dish sounded promising. It was disappointing as shrimp were overcooked. Pasta could have been better flavored.

Previous chef made better dishes. Waiter good. On the reservation we requested boot seats for our birthday celebration. But, we don’t have that even we ordered a lot of dishes just gave us a little table not even have space to put our food.
