A+ service. Thank you for being accomodating, I will be back!
Fantastic Tuna appetizer. Great Sushi and the cookie roll was fabulous. We loved this place.
Strange sushi experience! I am a serious sushi eater and was thrilled to see that Umami had a special tasting menu of sushi from Tokyo's Tsukiji Market. Of course I ordered it and the sushi was exquisite though the pieces were very small. The strange part was that the sushi bar was set up to prevent interaction with the sushi chefs who were on a lower level and far from the people sitting at the sushi bar. Also I asked if the 10 pieces of sushi I ordered could come just a few at a time, obviously not the way it was normally served. The waitress graciously asked the sushi chef and he agreed
All the other people sitting at the sushi bar ordered rolls or other dishes off the menu. The restaurant was full of young people having a great time. There was only 1 Asian diner and most people were there for the party, not the food, which was actually very good.
The tables are to close together. There is no music and it is still a very loud place.
Really enjoyed our meal. A nice place to go for a fun night out. The sliders are a must and the niguri was great. And the cookie dough ice cream dessert was awesome!
We decided to have dinner here for a birthday and loved every second we spent at Umami! We appreciated the attentive and informative waiter, the entire ambiance of the restaurant was cool and laid back. There was even enough seating for our party of seven. The food was absolutely delicious, a nice Asian twist on dishes such as tacos, ribs, and salads. The sushi rolls were marvelous. The portions were perfect, we all picked at each other's plates to try a little of everything. The faded Crain cocktail was a hit with us as well as the cookie dough rolls for a little birthday dessert, yum! Thank you Umami, I'll definitely return! Give this place a try everyone!!
We really enjoyed Umami. The food was simply delicious, interesting combinations and good service. Highly recommend.
The food here is in the spirit of having fun with twists on traditional Japanese food. The food was in fact fun, and pretty good. My main issue with the restaurant is that it was super-noisy. I was surprised that it would be so crowded and so noisy early on a Monday evening, but it is, after all, in the Marina.
Umami always exceeds expectations. My daughter requested that we go to Umami for her 16th birthday even though we go there all the time. The service was exceptional, happy hour half price wine awesome and the food, both from the happy hour menu and the regular menu was amazing.
We just wish it was open for lunch on weekends...
Always good food, drinks, and service with a trendy, upscale vibe.
Consistently excellent. Also a great option when you want Asian but not everyone loves sushi, the rest of the menu is just as good - if not better! Recommend the Kobe sliders, Tuna tataki, and Bakudan roll.
We recently dined at Umami. The dishes were well prepared and the Sushi was excellent. Everyone enjoyed the food. The ribs were too die for (coming from two rib men from the West). The drinks were also very good. Large selection of Saki and Japanese whiskey too. The area around the restaurant is also great area to explore. Only notable downside is quite loud. Hard to enjoy conversation so if this is an issue, recommend going during non-peak hours.
My fault for not paying attention to the restaurant closing at 10pm. Open table had an availability at 9:45 so we took it.
Upon arrival 9:50 after calling and leaving a message over the phone that we would be few minutes late, receptionist almost declined us because it seemed like they wanted to close and thought we were walk-ins . We told her we made reservations w/ open table so she pointed to the table that was available and let us know kitchen will close 10:30.
When we sat down, The guy that was cleaning tables and serving water thought we were walk-in customers and said to us kitchen is closed. The receptionist quickly notified the guy and apologized to us and gave us the menu.
My husband was a little irritated at first but once I calmed him down everything was fine.
Our waiter was knowledgeable as he gave great recommendations. We ordered fast and the food came in pretty fast. We didn't want to hold up the restaurant on our behave so we gobbled everything up the minute the food arrived. Customers that was dining before us was still lounging around. We were probably there 45 min to 1hr tops.
Overall we enjoyed the waiter, food and the ambience.
Making reservations 15 minutes before closing is a bit rushed.
Too many screaming children for a busy Saturday night! The service was very good, but the menu was hard to decipher and the food was just so-so. We will not return.
Amazing!!! We throughly enjoyed our dinner here. Prices were a little high, but everything was fantastic! We tried a ton of different rolls, dishes and apps and were happy with every choice. They were super busy too! All kinds of people were dining; business, couples, families with kids etc... Great place for everyone. I have to say, my favorite dish wasn't sushi at all, it was the edamame hummus and it was WONDERFUL!!! Must try this place of u like sushi!!
One of the few great restaurants that have continuously upheld their standards in food, quality and service!
We, as customers, appreciate the consistency in which Umami delivers great food and great service!
Keep it up!
Right when you walk in you know you're in a special place. The setup and ambiance are perfect for a special occassion or a romantic date night. Food, wine, and saki were all great! Service was on point as well. I definitely recommend!
Great dishes to share and savor that go beyond Japanese sushi. Authentic ingredients, fresh flavors, unique twists on old favorites. The Albacore Tataki provided a nice citrus tang and emphasized the savory depth of the crispy wild rice teemed with the tuna as it sizzled in front of us when presented with a flair. The kale sprout gomaae was a totally unexpected flavor combination with crispy bits of maitake mushroooms and meyer lemon sesame vinaigrette. The dessert cookie dough rolls were bite sized morsels of fun. The apple bread pudding with coconut ice cream and cinnamon tempura chips was light but packed with satisfying home baked flavor.
Best sushi in SF and really good price
Hands down my favorite restaurant in the city. Can't get enough!
Food is over priced for what you get
I celebrated my birthday with 7 friends and had a great experience. Our waitress was friendly and the food was great as always. Loved the happy hour special!
Omg delicious!! After all these years it is always so so good.
It never ceases to amaze me. So blessed to be able to have the opportunity to come here
Great!! Delicious food and great service!
Food and ambiance were great! Will definately return here. What a nice place this is
Umami Sushi is a fantastic offering of sushi and Japanese cuisine for a great price and a wonderful atmosphere. I would recommend Umami Sushi to even the most experienced sushi expert.
Great sashimi, great service, but expect some attitude from the hostesses
The atmosphere was a little like one of the mid-range chain restaurants but most of the food was better than the atmosphere would indicate. The appetizers seem to cater to deep fried Americana. But the sushi was great for the value. Only $49 for a 12 piece omakase. I even looked past the fact that the omakase came out all at once on a board.
I checked the reviews for several restaurants on Open Table and decided to give Umami a try. I'm very glad I did - it was superb! The menu has several sushi and sashimi offerings and (for those in the party who may not be up for sushi) there are items like teriyaki chicken, pot stickers, and the California rolls. I had the beet salad first, which came beautifully plated, and was heavenly - fresh and sweet. My sister, who cannot stand beets, loved them. Neither of us had tried sake before, and our server was quite knowledgeable, and suggested the perfect pairing for our meal. We also had the edamame hummus, another delight! The sushi was delicious - light and flavorful. It was a wonderful meal, and the service was attentive, knowledgeable and warm, without hovering. The meal was reasonably priced for the city - and the food is worth every cent. I loved the décor and the energy of the place. (However, if you like a "quiet little hideaway", this won't be for you. It was Thursday night, the restaurant - both upstairs and downstairs at the bar - was packed and very loud: sports-bar-on-game-night loud.) This is obviously a favorite restaurant with the locals and for good reason. There is parking available on the street, but since we were from out of town and visiting both the CA academy of Sciences and going to the Jessie Cook concert that night, we parked elsewhere and got a cab to and from the restaurant. This restaurant opens at 5:30pm, and will be packed quickly - definitely get reservations. I highly recommend this restaurant. You won't be disappointed!
I have never had a bad meal at Umami, and I've had some memorable ones. Last night was such a meal. Visiting foreign fri
This place has fantastic sashimi (tuna in particular) has good service (attentive but not too much) and a really fun and delicious ice cream cookie dough sushi style dessert (salted caramel is the best!)
Sushi rolls are always delicious but the vegetable tempura was very disappointing. The portions were way to large and kind of gooey. Individual veggies make for much better tempura.
Absolutely LOVE Umami for every occasion, intimate dining to a full blown celebration!
This is the only sushi place that we go to. It never fails and is always s high quality experience. We look forward to our next treat night.
Kale was outstanding. Cocktails tasty but on the weaker side.
The sushi was good and fresh. However it was extremely loud and i could barely hear the person i went there with which was a bummer.
Food was 5 Stars!
The Midori roll may have been the best roll I've ever had. And I've been eating sushi since the 80s. That may not be your specific experience, but you'll definitely find something to your liking. We arrived at opening with reservations, there was already a line at the door and and it filled up rapidly behind us. We were a little worried that all these people trying to order all at once would slow them down but it didn't seem to affect service or timing of food arrival one iota. Excellent sushi and sashimi as well as alternatives to the raw fish. This one is worth you time and effort to try out.
I met a person I hadn't seen in decades. Conversation was to be an important aspect of this dinner, as with most dinners. The noise levels made it incredibly difficult to have a conversation. There is a central, long table in the center of the room where guests were shouting and disruptive to others. I think they were a sports team. Otherwise, the restaurant is great. The sushi was terrific, fresh, artistic. The miso soup was wonderful. The architecture is exactly right for this " Japanese tavern."
