Umami Burger - Oakland
The poor reviews that I read about this place are more than justified. The patty on my burger was absolutely tasteless.
Food is always great. Thin fries are amazing and the Truffle Burger is always very tasty. My friend had the Manly Burger and she thought it was the best burger she had ever eaten.
Not what I expected. Decent drink menu and food was fine. But a total “joint” and not really a restaurant.
A great place to grab a burger with a twist. Also a great place to grab fries and beers. Give it a try.
I would recommend this restaurant but with exact information about MY experience.
Love those truffle fries. The burgers were good - our party had 1 beef burger, 2 ahi burgers and 1 chicken burger. The ahi burgers got the best reviews.
We did like the ice cream sandwiches except mine was frozen solid. I had to wait several minutes to eat it.
The service was great.
I’ll go back for those truffle fries!
We really enjoyed the burger, but the service, though friendly, was painfully slow. We ordered apps and burgers at 6:20. The apps arrived a little after 7:00 (actually, one of the apps never arrived), and the burgers closer to 7:15. A "quick burger" place this is not.
Was 10 min late due to traffic. Waited 10 more min for hostess/manager to come to front. Told us he gave away our table and would put us at back of waistline with 30 min wait. Walked across the street to a fantastic Mexican restaurant without wait or reservations. Manager and restaurant too arrogant for burgers. First disappointment with Open Table. Try the Mexican place across the street. Amazing place.
Food was okay but better when they first opened a few yrs ago.. Service was slow-- had to ask to for silverware and the check. Looked like only 1-2 servers for entire place n it was full-- maybe at most 50% capacity
We found a new "go to" pre-concert spot. Only a couple blocks and an easy walk from the Fox and the Paramount, this place is a hidden gem. The truffle burger, bliss! The truffle tater tots, double bliss!!
Great service on top of great food!!
Disappointed with the whole thing. We’ve been here many times before events at Paramount and know it can get super busy. Made a reservation for 6:00, got there 6:05 and were seated quickly with menus. Server very nice but clearly busy. Two simple burgers, two drinks-food arrived 6:50,drinks arrived AFTER we had finished our food & made at least three requests for our drinks. Bummer
We just came back from Anaheim and ate at the Umami Burger there and it was spectacular. Unfortunately, the Oakland location is nothing like it. The salad was over dressed the lettuce cups where terrible (nothing like the first time) and the burgers so so. The prices are pretty high, so we expected more.
They noted they don’t do opentable reservations on Saturday’s which was annoying. While we were able to get a table, probably would’ve chosen to eat elsewhere and get open table points
The Burger was sooooo great, but the service pushed the product to the bottom of our experience, Management clearly does not know how to staff appropriately, there were four people trying to serve more than 100 demanding customers. I'm willing to pay more for the burger to cover Jose's hourly rate, trust us!!!!
Service was remarkably slow. Had to wait almost an hour to get two burgers and two kids meals. Food was very tasty, and the server was extremely nice and apologetic about the kitchen’s delay. Not sure I would go back though because of the time it took.
Booked a 6:30 reservation and had a 7:30 show at the Paramount. Got there at 6:25 and learned they had not held our reservation because "it got busy." They said it would be a 40 minute wait with no apology.
We came here 75 minutes before a show a block away (with a reservation). It took us 15 minutes to be seated. When we were seated, we told the waitress about our timeline and that we wanted to order quickly. We ordered and waited 50 minutes and the food still hadn't arrived, at which point we had to cancel our order. It was insane. I have literally never had to cancel an order in my life!
Our department was debuting a new intern so we decided to debut this restaurant, as I've walked past it many a time and thought "why not"? Given it was paid for by somebody else, I did not concern myself with how much my burger, fries and tea cost, and just let the experience soak away.... Our server was friendly and knowledgeable, the food was tasty and filling, it wasn't too loud in there, and it felt as if we were on the edge of hipness, if not exactly drowning ourselves in it.
When we got there for our reservation, there were only 2 other tables of guests. We eventually got our drinks, but we waited an hour and still hadn't gotten appetizers. Our waitress ghosted us. We tried to get change to pay for our drinks, but couldn't get any staff to assist. We finally just walked out.
First visit and the burger menu was awesome. The service and atomsphere was great. A good spot for the Paramount Theater access. Easy and convenient
I would have given 5 stars overall but for a Saturday afternoon it took a while for the hostess to seat us. About 7 mins until we were even acknowledged and an additional 5 mins until we were seated. However once we were seated our server was great, very attentive and answered all our questions as first timers. So to the woman that has blonde hair pulled back into a ponytail thank you. You were great! Because of you I’d come back.
Everything was great food and drinks but was sad a lot of items on the menu and beers they did not have / out of stock — seems unprofessional to be out of so many things on a Saturday night peak dinner time. But other than that love this place and it’s vibes always good dinner and obsessed with truffle cheese fries!! Service is always fast and prompt and friendly too. I recommend this place to anyone who loves burgers.
Bad food and bar at high prices. Umami burger ordered as medium was severely over cooked, dry as sawdust. No garnishes on the otherwise empty plate. Initial bartender service was good. But replacement guy had to search internet on his phone for how to make a martini and I ended up with more of a gin old-fashioned
Went on Saturday, Dec 8th at 7:30pm. Waited 45 minutes for food, before walking out. Service was non-existent. The place was not that busy. Staff needs training on serving customers.
We went to dinner before the Gospel Choir show at the Paramount. We arrived at 5:40 and had to be at the 7:00 show. We arrived to find our friends already seated; they had just started eating a shared order of French fries, which tasted very good. At the time, the restaurant was mostly empty; only three other tables were seated and we joked that we would have time to spare getting to the show one block away.
A couple minutes after we sat down, the waitress appeared, took our drink orders and an order for onion rings. We sat, we waited. Finally, the drinks arrived. We thanked the waitress and continued to wait. Once, when we tried to flag her down, she acknowledged us and said she's be "right back." She came back with the onion rings, but didn't offer to re-fill the sodas. Again, we waited and watched two other servers bring food to tables who were seated after we came in.
40 minutes after we were seated, my friend assertively declined to let her slip away after she, once again, said she'd be right over. He asked when our food would be ready and said we had to get to a 7:00 show. Finally, in two waves, our food arrived. We asked for and got the check right away.
The chicken sandwich was tasteless and burnt. The Burger Trio featured a smaller portion of the tasteless chicken along with a mediocre mini-hamburger and an over-cooked and unappetizing Impossible Burger.
Sadly, they don't have pickles as an appetizer anymore :( Solid salad and burger and service! Always happy to drop by.
Been here multiple times. They changed the menu a bit , the brussel sprouts were much better a year ago but the fries and burgers are still on point. Our server was very friendly and accommodating. Would recommend to friends and willing to return.
The experience here would be great of they had enough staff on the nights that there is an Oakland Speaker's Series lecture. The kitchen and the service is too slow, even though every server is working very hard.
Great service! Food was pretty good, didn’t care for the asparagus appetizer. The vegan burger is really good! I was sad they were out of the sour beer as that’s the only kind I like.
Very poor service. Lost our reservation. We had a party of eight so had to wait till the fixed a table. Watched several rats playing outside the window.
Service slow. Failed to take one order at all. But love the impossible burger!
Second time here and again they botched our reservation
Had to wait over 20 minutes for an average burger served without a shred of lettuce or tomato in sight. Probably won’t go again except as a last resort
When we showed up for our reservation the place was in disarray. The cook seemed to be having a fight with the rest of the staff. Tables clearly hadn't been bussed in hours, customers were waiting for attention for wait staff to get their food or pay their bills with despair in their eyes. We were on time for our reservation. After waiting 15 minutes at the host stand and then 5 minutes at the bar for anyone to greet us, or even so "Sorry, we'll be with you in a moment." we left. The food at Agave across the street was delicious. Clearly, this place has some management issues.
Our wait staff was very nice. Kitchen and bar ran at a snails pace. We waited an hour and a half for our food and beverages.
my dining companion was 45 minutes late so we had to give up our table and we had a 7 PM curtain - sorry about that Open Table and Umami
Been here before and was looking forward to coming back before a show nearby. Hardly anyone in the restaurant when we arrived, yet we waited 35 mins for our food. The salad was good, but the fries were cold and the burger which came almost 10 mins after the salad and fries, was not even the burger we ordered. We had ordered medium, and it was medium rare, but we had no time to send it back. Server was pleasant and said she was trying to expedite, when she saw our anxiousness as time passed. Made it to the show right before the lights went down. Don't know if they were short cooks (on a Friday night), or if management is the problem, but wouldn't chance it again.
Absolutely the worst dining experience I’ve had in my life.
After hearing about Umami burger for some time, we finally got to experience first hand. We were starving when we showed up, and tried to order several drinks and appetizers, but sadly, many of the items were sold out (ginger beer, root beer, tater tots, and a few other apps I can't recall). The restaurant was not too busy when we arrived at 6pm on a Saturday, but it didn't take long for the place to fill up. Our poor waitress was working hard, but she could not keep up. We waited a long time for our apps, and even longer for our main meal. There were a few mix ups with the orders, but once we got the food - OMG - it was sooo good, it almost made up for the wait.
The baconator is to die for. The sliders is a great way to try a few different burgers (including the Impossible burger, which is meat-free, and actually pretty tasty). The Manly fries and the Maple Bacon fries are a must. But even the plain skinny fries are excellent. We all would have loved to try dessert, but because it all took so long and we were going to a show, we didn't have time.
We'll go back again, maybe for lunch, so we can try more options. But no matter what, manly fries are happening.
We waiting over an hour after ordering and never got our dinner. We asked for the bill and left.
The food was great but not enough wait staff. The bartender doesn’t know how to make a dirty martini. Sent it back once and it came back as straight martini only to find out when paying the bill that they didn’t have any olives. The soda in my friends vodka soda was flat. It is best for wine and beer.
We like the location for attending events at the Paramount Theater. It is very convenient.
Going to concert at Paramount
