About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Neighborhood gem
  • Charming
It’s The Chip but on another level (just one flight of stairs). An experimental kitchen brings a menu made for sharing with an array of small and big plates - all seasonally produced and a little different from your normal Scottish fare. The Upstairs Brasserie offers a casual dining experience for any time of day. Daily specials let our chef’s get creative and often just satisfy the staff’s cravings. The food is, locally and ethically sourced. Find a seat on the mezzanine and overlook the courtyard in full swing or get cosy in our Brasserie amongst the colourful and slightly abstract paintings.

The chip is a great venue but this time i felt the menu let it down, there really wasn’t much on it that i wanted to eat. I chose beer battered cod cheeks to start which were underwhelming - as was the taramasalata mayo, the pickle was also way too sharp. For the main I had skate which was cooked well. However, the accompanying sauce was too sweet and so rather cloying. I have no recollection what the fritters were meant to be but they tasted of very little. I didn’t enjoy the food

what a great place, however a few things managed to not make our night perfect, we went relatively (6.30) early so not sure if there was a shift change but time between starter and main course was too long. one of our dishes had to be returned as it was cold!! i had steak and was surprised by no sides. not an issue paying for them separately but it would be helpful if the waitress pointed this out and not when the meal was served. I had the steak and it was lovely. this would have a got a better rating as it is a wonderful place .. attention to detail would up its game. I thought about withholding the 10% service charge which was automatically added to our bill, but didn't, just got out of the place and moved on. as i say a bit better attention to detail and would have been 5 stars.

Although the food was delicious, the whole experience was let down by the timing of the food. Our table was booked for 1pm and it was nearly 1.40 before we received our starters. This meant that our lunch needed to be rushed as we had an afternoon appointment. Disappointing.

The service, decor, ambience and drinks were fabulous. However we found the food hit and miss. The seafood laksa and flatbread was delicious, but the venison burger was not good due to the green peppercorn sauce adding an overwhelming briney/salty flavour. The chicken kiev was ordered after my husband saw a huge fillet being served to the next table, unfortunately his was much smaller. Little things like the mussels on the charcuterie board not being dressed make a difference.
