My family went to this restaurant on Easter. Only one other couple dining the rest of the dining room was empty. We were sat at a table next to the other couple. Immediately upon sitting we were given a menu and within minutes was asked for our order...We felt very rushed the entire time there. Menu was different than what we checked out on OpenTable. We even called prior to make sure that the menu was being offered and not a special menu for Easter. For the price paid the experience and food didn't meet our expectations. The food was okay, pretty presentation but the sauces they used were so heavy you couldn't even taste the flavor of the filets. Disappointing Easter dinner.
Lovely setting; great table which honored a request (appreciate that extra touch). Huge buffet selection chosen well for Easter Brunch. Wait staff was friendly, engaged and attentive. Beautiful old and elegant dining room. One my favorite “go to “ places for something a little special and quiet.
I like to try new places to recommend during Maine restaurant week. Normally that’s a great way to let restaurants give you a sneak peek into what to expect. I was so disappointed with twenty one milk street despite being excited and am glad i went during a prix fixe time. We went on a Sunday at 5:30 so it was not crowded. Sadly our meal took over two hours (the wait between the appetizers and dinner was an hour!!), our main courses came out over cooked (ordered medium sirloin got well done) and when I asked for a take home (didn’t eat the steak it was so bad and was going to give it to my dog) the server forgot. When I reminded him he said it had been thrown out. Overall I would not recommend to my family and friends. Really disappointed as I’m always looking for new places to go.
My daughters liked their food, was kid friendly. I don't know if I'd reorder any of our food except for the grits and pork belly. We had fun trying a new place during restaurant week but I'm not sure we'd go back.

Food was not well cooked, very little seasoning on anything. Not a good value for the pricepoint they are charging.
The steak was over cooked and the desserts were nothing special but all the other food was good. Delicious truffle fries and grits.
We went to 20 Milk St for Restaurant Week because the menu looked great.
The dining room was warm and inviting, the seating was comfortable and the staff was courteous.
That being said, both my son and I were disappointed in our meals.
My Garam Marsala Carrot Ginger soup was bland, my beef entree was 1/3 fat, the French fries were moist and my chocolate cake tasted like a dry brownie.
My son did like his pork belly appetizer, but his fish/ lobster entree was rubbery and the key lime pie dessert was still frozen.
We'll chalk it up to experience, but we would not go back or recommend it friends.
Had a great dinner. Our server seemed to be new and a little timid.
Not everyone likes to be rushed through dinner. If a customer asks for a "few minutes" between ordering a drink and ordering their food, that doesn't mean come back asking every 3 minutes.

We live about 45 min away and have been coming to Twenty Milk Street once, twice or even three times a year for many years now. We have always had a great experience. We usually go as a couple, but have brought our adult children and guests as well. The food is prepared very consistently. The ingredients are fresh and the menu changes often enough to provide new choices. Service is always excellent. It’s a nice quiet comfy atmosphere with fireplace. I feel it’s a bit of a secret place since they are in the hotel.
My husband and I dined on an unusually busy Sunday night. One waitstaff and one receptionist cared for the room. The service was just wonderful. We felt as if we were the most important people in the room.

We love the understated ambiance of the restaurant. Dark wood, nice views of the surrounding streets, low lights. My husband had a lobster, starting with a clam chowder. I enjoyed shrimp and grits, with pork belly...nice contrasts. And we split a great mousse cake with ice cream. The service was excellent, as always. Very enjoyable evening and great food!
Have been to 20 Milk in the past and enjoyed it more. We were told that the kitchen was overwhelmed because the Armory was busy. Needless to say it was a long wait to receive our meals. Based on some of the other comments in the dining room , others food was not good once it arrived. Our food was good once we got it but server was absent with minimal follow up throughout the evening. Disappointing experience compared to prior visits.
Went to Milk Street due to an Open Table gift certificate. Very pleased with the food and service. The 3 course prix fixe menu is a great value. We'll go there again.

This restaurant is a hidden gem in Portland. The staff (especially John at breakfast/lunch) are amazing and engaging.
Have been going to this restaurant for 8+ years and have never had a bad experience.
We were pretty disappointed with our experience at Milk Street unfortunately. The crowd is definitely "older". The chairs were extremely comfortable. The bread was delicious. The rest of the food left a lot to be desired.

The food was very good. We had the fruit bowl and lobster benedict. The service, however, was terrible. We were seated for 10 minutes before I flagged down the bus boy asked him to find our waitress so we could have coffee. We waited another 15 minutes before she came out of the kitchen and I was able to flag her in order to place our order. When we wanted a refill on our coffee, we motioned to the hostess who was the only one in the dining room. She looked at us and walked off. We finally asked the busboy for more coffee. When we wanted our bill, it was almost 20 minutes before our bill was delivered to our table and this was after having to ask three people for the bill. The restaurant was not even that busy when we were seated.
Our dinners were delicious. We enjoyed the soft background piano music and appreciated our attentive server, Bob, while celebrating our anniversary. We were also appreciative of the seating at the far end of the room away from the crowd.
Brunch is a great deal if you're on the Portland Regency Getaway Weekend package which credits $30 toward breakfast/brunch. This visit we were not on that package so had to pay full (price-y) fair. Homemade hash and eggs still good although a little too salty for my taste. Eggs and toast at $9.00 a little expensive but eggs cooked as ordered. Dish of berries very nice. Wish the coffee cups were larger so the server wouldn't have to keep checking so often.
Upon walking into the restaurant, I immediately felt uncomfortable. It has a very stuffy vibe. The drinks were overpriced and absolutely awful. We had the lobster risotto with scallops which were over cooked. The other entree was the bone in pork chop. It was unimpressive and lacked taste. The desserts were fantastic however. Service was painfully slow! We had a $50 open table gift certificate and it took over a half hour to get the bill and the certificate applied. This is definitely a restaurant I won’t go back to.

This is the restaurant we are always looking for but seldom if ever find. Subdued elegance, with surroundings and service from another time. We were enjoying a rare evening with a treasured friend, and this was the perfect setting for intimate conversation. Plus perfect martinis, perfect Caesar salad, and wonderful entrees from a skilled kitchen. The shrimp and grits sparkled; the special scallop and lobster risotto was rich and satisfying. When we return to this fair town, we will head here.
I can't stop thinking about Twenty Milk Street's lobster stew! We were passing through Portland on our way south and the valet graciously took our car a couple hours before our dinner reservation. After exploring Portland on foot, we sank into the comfy dining room and enjoyed wine & an appetizer of fried oysters and Brussels sprouts. Our server was exceptional - professional, friendly and appropriately attentive without being overbearing. In addition to lobster stew (really the best I've had anywhere) our 3-generational table enjoyed scallop-stuffed haddock & pasta - also delicious. I need to find a reason to go to Portland to visit again.
We thoroughly enjoyed our experience eating here. The food was excellent and the service was very good. I have also had the pleasure of enjoying their outdoor lunch during the summer. Such a quaint spot.
20 Milk Street is a good restaurant in a lovely hotel. Unfortunately, I was taking two 19 year olds out for brunch and the description on open table did not tell me this was a hotel. On a normal weekend, we would have stood on line at one of the more fun brunch places but on Columbus Day weekend, a reservation was imperative. Unfortunately for my teens, this was a little stuffy and not really fun. I only wish the description had said the restaurant was in the Regency Hotel!
Excellent kitchen with good ingredients and talented chefs. When the baked stuffed lobster is available it is the best in and around Portland by far. Reliable and under-rated this is a fine place to dine.
Busy Saturday summer evening in Portland, but Twenty Milk St. was quiet. They were seating people outside in the little garden adjacent to the main entrance of the hotel and apparently had decided not to serve in the dining room. When I booked, there was no mention of outside dining and since I am not a fan, I was happy to see that staff did decide to open up the dining room. We made reservations for 7pm and we had the restaurant to ourselves until three other parties came in around 8pm. Loved how we could chat in normal voices all evening even after other people were seated--felt like a pleasant little oasis in the midst of Saturday night's bustle and booked-solid status at many other restaurants across the city.
While the menu had limited entrees, each of the four of us chose something different: gnocchi, chicken, seafood and steak. Everyone seemed very happy with the dinners. There were quite a few appetizer choices, a couple of specials, and a nice dessert menu as well.
Service was good, but we had to ask for bread. I'm glad we did because we were given an entire round loaf of warm bread that was excellent. Butter was soft for spreading, but only three small piped pats came with the bread. I would have liked at least twice as much. I ordered the filet mignon and it was a substantial portion, arriving a bit overcooked around the perimeter, but the center was close enough to the medium I ordered that I was pleased--it was an excellent filet, well-seasoned and wonderfully tender. We also had to ask for drink refills.
Our waiter was just a tad inattentive, but pleasant enough and unobtrusive, always coming to the table and waiting patiently for our conversation to end and our attention turn to him, before he spoke.
The bill came to $250 (not including tip) for 2 appetizers, 4 entrees, 3 desserts and 3 non-alcoholic drinks.
Valet parking was great, although there is a public parking garage close by.
First time at Twenty Milk Street--we'll be back!
Very nice dinner in the lounge area as the main dining room was closed. The bar was well stocked, the bartender knowledgeable and our server was excellent. Only issue was not finding out until we arrived that the main dining room was closed and seating was to be outside, which we weren't interested in. It ended up being fine, however, as the lounge was comfortable and charming. We will request the lounge next time we go. Lovely and intimate space! This was our second visit and the food was excellent again although a little quirky. Highly recommend it!
I had a reservation at Twenty Milk Street, but received a somewhat confusing voicemail about The Garden Cafe at The Portland Regency Hotel. It wasn't clear that they were moving all reservations outside. This was really not the dining experience I was hoping for. The Garden Cafe is adjacent to the hotel driveway, and not as charming as they build it up to be. The food was fair. I had a watermelon tomato salad that was nice but perfunctory. And the Tomato Gnocchi was horrible. Floppy pieces of coral-colored dough thrown in the water by someone who didn't care about gnocchi. It was really sad looking. I ate half because I was starving, but then I sent the rest back. The restaurant docked half the price of the gnocchi, which was considerate. I did have breakfast at the Hotel Restaurant Twenty Milk Street, which was a very nice experience, but dinner really fell flat.
A lovely, quiet dinner in the outdoor garden of the Regency Portland's Twenty Milk Street. The beef was local, aged and perfectly prepared. The vegetables were seasonal and the service was perfectly timed. I did not order a special drink but the one I was served was beautiful and good. The restaurant called to ask if we minded eating outdoors ahead of time. We are from the South and have been cloistered indoors for a month so we were delighted to enjoy a meal in a quiet city garden that is beautiful, clean, with a view of the hotel which a lovely repurposed Armory. I do not take pictures of food but do of perfectly preserved, landscaped buildings. If you are looking for a quiet summer dinner this is your place.
We were Not informed that Tweny Milk does not serve in the summer. We had out of town and state guests. We wanted a quiet elegant restaurant. We are dressed up and arrive to discover only serve in the Garden Cafe. In the courtyard/drive way of the Regency. Behind the shrubs of an adjoining business was loud punks music blaring. Then the bugs started buzzzing and was a very chilly evening for July. Finished our drinks and left.
After trying to get a reservation for 8 to have brunch on Sunday and finding most places either wouldn't take a reservation or couldn't seat 8, I decided to try 20 Milk Street. We have stayed at the hotel several times in the past and had positive experiences so I thought I would give it a try. The service was top shelve! The food was well prepared and though nothing to brag about, like exotic taste or unusual combination of ingredients, it was well prepared with a decent portion size. The restaurant was quite, allowing you to have a conversation without having to shout to be heard. The valet parking was also a plus in the old port section on a weekend. Will certainly return again.
We ate in the garden and the setting was superb - inside restaurant was closed on Sunday. Very friendly staff and attentive. I started with a lobster stew - had quite a lot of meat and very tasty. For my entree, I had a salad with lobster, avocado and mango. Quite good but I could have had a little more dressing. My husband had a daily special - a shrimp/scallop with linguini pasta. He said he loved it . Would recommend this place.
What a delightful place! We dined outdoors, but they offered indoor seating because it was threatening rain. The lobster stew was divine, and shouldn't be missed! I had scallops, and they were excellent, perfectly cooked. The service was a little odd at first, but the server, Matt, relaxed as the evening continued. I think he was concerned that they were going to have to rush everyone indoors when it started raining, but the rain held off and dinner proceeded. Give this place a try!
A very good overall dining experience. My wife and I have eaten here several times, and the filet is always a top choice. This time my wife's filet was actually over cooked, and the cut of meat was not up to its usual standards. When the waiter asked us how everything was, my wife mentioned the issue with her steak. The waiter didn't hesitate to take the steak, on a separate plate, back to the kitchen, and within 15 mins a new, perfect steak arrived. The manager also checked in with us to apologize and assure us that they would make things right. In all our experiences here, this is the first time it wasn't perfect the first time around, but they made a great recovery. They also removed my wife's dessert from the bill, which was a nice gesture. We'll certainly be back.
