Award-winning owner and Chef Ben Smith fuses various ethnic cuisines—from Asia and the South Pacific to France and the American South—to create unique and flavorful small plates and seafood specialties.
The cozy restaurant, adorned with local art and handmade accents, offers a unique bar centerpiece with fine wines and liquors, local draft beers, and daily-rotating specialty cocktails.
Tsunami’s 5-7 p.m. weeknight happy hour, entitled “Pau Hana,” rotates innovative small plate and cocktail specials.
Consistently named “Best Seafood Restaurant” in the Memphis Magazine and Memphis Flyer, coveted Tsunami entrées including a spice-crusted tuna with wasabi vinaigrette, beef tenderloin with smoked chile butter, and roasted seabass with black Thai rice and soy beurre blanc.
Fresh and innovative food combined with professional service. Lovely evening!
Excellent food and outstanding service
Would most definitely recommend to a friend. Great food and service.
Always an amazing experience. Katie Richmond is the best server! Apps, entrees and desserts five stars. Specialty cocktails were delicious as well. Ben creates fresh and creative dishes that don’t disappoint.
Staff did a great job helping me navigate the menu and find options that were compatible with my dietary restrictions!
As usual the food was outstanding and so was our server, Scarlet. It was the perfect evening to celebrate my birthday!
My 5 year old son and I wen there for a fancy dessert date night. It was the first time he had been to a "fancy" restaurant. Candles on the tables, real napkins, beautifully presented desserts, and very nice staff made it a great experience.
My husband and I think rate the Sea Bass as the best in town! We will return.
WIthout a doubt, my favorite Memphis restaurant. I've never been disappointed at Tsunami. Dishes have just enough Asian flavor to be interesting yet not overpowering. Wine list offers a good selection of wines by the glass as well as by the bottle. Outstanding!
Great service, great food and wine recommendations!
Food was absolutely amazing. Passed by this place several times and went on eater to find recommendations for good restaurants in Memphis for a date night and this was in the top of the list. Would definitely go back again! Good drink menu for wine lovers as well
Himachi appetizer was delicious and don’t miss out on the seas bass! The beet salad was amazing. Tsunami never dissapoints plus it’s a Project Green Fork restaurant. Support Local!
We’ve been to Tsunami at least a dozen times. Most of our dinners have been with our adult children or friends so we’ve been able to at least sample most every dish they offer. Not one has disappointed!! Each app, entree and dessert are obviously prepared fresh with not only artistic talent but incredible mixes of flavors. This is one of the best restaurants in the entire Memphis area. So good we bought Chef Ben’s cookbook.
Where to start. My parents have been coming to Tsunami for a number of years, and they always rave about their first visit. My first experience years ago was top-notch, too, but ever since, things have gone downhill. Tonight was probably the last night we will frequent this restaurant. The sea bass and beef tenderloin (two orders) were overdone. I sent back my beef tenderloin, and it was perfect the second time around. However, it’s quite frustrating when the chef/owner is sitting on his computer in the dining room, allowing the subpar dining experience (or outside sitting on a bench in his chef jacket. What’s the point?). Last week, I was here on a date, and the tuna was terrible. The presentation was lackluster, first of all; the tuna was over-seasoned and room temperature; and the “cucumber salad” was something I could have made at home myself. My date’s scallops and salmon also tasted as if they had been cooked in advance. My mom looks forward to this sea bass a couple times a year, and tonight she said she was going out of town for her next birthday. If you’re going to go here, get the deviled eggs and enjoy an entree elsewhere. The service has been much better than the food, so I’m giving it three stars.
Per usual, everything was perfection!
With Jeff there it’s going to be even better.
The scallops were amazing! Great atmosphere and service.
Dog friendly outside seating. Great small plates and drinks. Katie wonderful server and always like seeing Scarlett and Jeff!
It was a very good experience, good food, and good ambience. That being said, the restaurant had the feeling of one that hasn’t quite found its identity. The food, the look, the feel all missed what felt like just one defining element that would set it apart. Keep looking because you are close but not there yet.
Loved our dinner there!! The only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars on all is because we were sat in the “extra” dining space to the right of the front door. It just feels like extra space. Would help if it had art in the walls. Service, food and beverages were yummy!!!
There is no better restaurant in Memphis than Tsunami. My wife is on an extremely limited diet, and Chef Ben Smith always caters to her needs, and provides an extraordinary menu items as well. Have never had a meal that was less than excellent!
Food was just okay IMO. Shrimp potstickers and Calamari were fine.
The best part of the meal was our warm bread and the Vanilla Bean Creme Brûlée. We thought entrees were just average.
Service and ambiance good though... :).
Very nice place! Great food but not filling
We had a wonderful time. Everything was just excellent! Service, food everything!
Always a great place to spend time with friends! Great food! Great atmosphere!
Can't beat the cocktails and food! Server did a wonderful job with suggestions.
The Seabass is absolutely amazing!! We come back every time just for it!
We have been going to Tsunami since it opened more than 15 years ago. We don't go often, but we do go regularly and we have never, ever had anything but an absolutely outstanding experience. The food and the service have been consistently excellent - it is a major factor in our continuing patronage. Our entrees on this occasion were the Seared Scallops w/ Bangkok Curry and Black Rice - cooked absolutely perfectly and really delicious and Roasted Salmon w/ Grilled Vegetable Ratatouille - also done to perfection and delicious. Leave room for desert. We had the Chocolate Banana Lumpia and the Chocolate Stout Cake. Again, delicious.
Go to Tsunami - you will love it!
I must say, I've never seen smaller portions of sorbet. They were the size of a melon scooper, not an ice cream scooper. I also feel the cucumber served with the tuna tasted very oily and not that flavorful. The tuna was delicious, but it needed something with it, besides cucumber slices.
Service was excellent.
Excellent restaurant! The staff was extremely helpful and friendly. We were told about each item on the menu and we were very pleased with what we got. Hands down best scallops ever!
The chef/ owner even checked on us to make sure everything was great. I love this place and can’t believe it’s taken this long for me to go. I definitely will be back , soon!!!
Yes the cod with the soy buerre blanc is that good! Amazing service. Amazing food. Truly a gem of midtown.
Ben is wonderful!! Sitting in the bar area was perfect for this occasion. He gave us personal attention and fabulous service! The deviled eggs are delicious!
If you missed Chef Stephanie’s honeysuckle sorbet this year (blooms are gone, boo hoo), it is imperative that you mark your calendar for when they bloom next May.......supper was amazing as usual, but the sorbet and starting with the chilled cantaloupe soup were both other worldly.......
So reliably excellent! We split the calamari, cabbage salad, and a small plate each and ate our fill!
My favorite restaurant in town! But 5 women had small plates - 3 were non spiced goo that my friends did not eat, with pita bread. Mine was small mahi-mahi, ho hum. But the one who ordered well was the Napoleon eggplant! The waitress never brought my last glass of wine ordered but that was probably a good thing.
Maybe the restaurant wants to stop selling small plates? I wondered if we split entries it would be better?
I have NEVER had anything but perfect dinners there so I will go again.....
We love Tsunami! We were there for our 36th anniversary and it was such a delight.
Tsunami never disappoints. Our friends had not been before and said they would definitely go back. We have loved it for years. We tried a variety of dishes and they were all delicious
Really wonderful evening. Don’t know what can be done about noise level, but it definitely affects communicating in a negative way.
Tsunami is a gem of a place. This is my favorite restaurant in Memphis. The food and service is always excellent. Love Love Love this place.
Consistently good food and cocktails. A Cooper Young staple.
