Great service and food. I found the menu to be a bit “thin” but what we ordered was OK. The servers were amazing though! Thanks for offering a taste of Austrian wine, which I would have never had otherwise.
A little pricey but a good experience. Just wished they would serve regular bread.
Great service with very knowledgeable staff. Excellent food, splendid presentation. Definitely a great dining experience
Trummer’s is an enigmatic place. We have been twice, once on a weekend night and recently on a weekday and both times the food and service were inconsistent. The food can be amazing (shrimp and grits, Brussel sprouts, some excellent desserts) or only OK (undercooked risotto, unmemorable quail, oddly flavored popcorn ice cream). The service is also uneven, at times attentive and friendly and at others very slow and inexperienced, with long, unexplained periods where neither food nor servers are to be seen.
Examples? The fresh hot cornbread, which is terrific, arrives seconds after the appetizers, meaning that one of them is going to be cold by the time you get to it. First drinks are delivered promptly but after that are never refilled, coffee/tea are not offered, and dishes are explained by servers who do not always deliver the right thing or are unsure of what is in them.
The food and service are nowhere near the same level as the Inn at Little Washington and honestly, the service at Sweetwater Tavern is regularly better. The food is oftentimes really, really good but again, not consistently so. It’s not bad or even average but it is not great – I can think of a half dozen or more restaurants where the food is as good or better than Trummer’s. Dinner is not inexpensive ($150+ for two without alcohol) and at that level, in the end, I expect more.
Second time we went for date night, and we have been pleased both times. Service is excellent, food is wonderful, and ambience is enjoyable. The bar selection of wines and whiskeys is fantastic.
We chose the patio for our anniversary dinner. Service was great, even though we were crazy enough to stay out under the awning in the downpour (we were offered a table inside but enjoyed the rain and the patio to ourselves instead). Waiters braved the weather to provide great service. Food was delicious, be aware, there is not a huge selection, but everything we had was good with their own twist.
A GREAT Restaurant. Food and Service were outstanding.
I'm going to start by saying the food at Trummer's was excellent. My issue was purely with the selection of the "Mercy of the Chef". I have been to Trummer's 3 times in the last 3 months. The first time was for my 15th anniversary and my wife and I each had the "Mercy of the Chef" and it was absolutely amazing. Trummer's quickly became one of our favorite restaurants in the area. However yesterday I also brought my wife and kids. So we had a family of four and because of our previous experience we ordered the "Mercy of the Chef" for everyone. It's listed as a 5 course menu item which "is usually 6 or 7 courses". We only got 5 dishes but that was not the issue. The courses were a snack, asparagus, stone fruit, broccoli, a pork dish that I forget the name, and dessert. Overall we ordered 4 "Mercy" dishes and I believe the total protein was 2 eggs and about 4 ounces of pork. Three out of four of us left dinner hungry and we ate everything presented to us. I will certainly never order the "Mercy of the Chef" again without confirming the courses. The current Austrian menu is significantly lacking in substance. My first experience included a salmon course, a half of a Cornish hen course, and a beef course. If we received that selection yesterday I would have been very happy. Instead I left dropping over $500 with a family that was rummaging through the fridge after I got home. I really wish we had just ordered the burger off of the patio menu.
They advertised waffles online while booking the reservation. Was disappointed when taking my wife for her birthday that they had changed their menu, waffles weren't available.
Food, service and atmosphere were all top notch. Go with “at the chefs mercy”...you won’t be disappointed!
Spring Tasting was fantastic and the wine pairings were surperb! Was a busy evening with a wedding on one side of the cottage, but everyone in the dining area was attended to well!
It took 10 mins to get a menu in a nearly empty room. The food was meh. Drinks and overall selection were nice. Charcuterie selection was tasty. Cookery was sub-par.
This was a Birthday Celebration and it was delightful. The service was most outstanding and the food great, especially the salmon and charcuterie appetizer which 3 of us shared. Complimentary champagne and 3 chocolate truffles with “Happy Birthday “ in chocolate on the serving dish made it extra special for my friend. The house “Titanic” cocktail was especially good.
Two things...the meringue on the Pavlova was too hard and we were not seated in the beautiful main dining room as requested which was a disappointment. This might have been due to a wedding taking place in the restaurant. Otherwise it was a lovely and fun evening and we’ll definitely be back!
Amazing meal! Our group of 4 all opted to do the tasting menu - the service, presentation, and food were all perfect. Additionally, the restaurant was able to accommodate the various dietary restrictions in our group easily. I also had the wine pairing option and appreciated the unique wines chosen and how knowledgeable the server was.
Will definitely be going back!
We arrived a little early and sat at the bar. Jonathan was AMAZING! Try the Titanic, it was fabulous. We went on a Sunday to so it was the family meal. The entrée wasn't exactly how they described on the menu which was annoying because they substituted for things I don't eat. We would have chosen the other entrée had I know. The other food was very good though. Our server wasn't that knowledgeable and the service from him was awkward but the rest of the staff was fine. Bring a sweater, it was FREEZING in there. I said something and the waiter said, "yes it is cold, huh". I gave 3 stars because Jonathan was a 5 but this guy was a 2. We will definitely go back but on a different night so we have more control over what we ate. It was our anniversary so it was a little disappointing but the company made up for it.
This restaurant is a fantastic, hidden gem in the area. Great, quiet location and the food and service is top notch! The ambiance has a slight rustic feel, as well as that similar to a bed and breakfast.
We recently visited for an anniversary dinner. We made a reservation but did have a short wait. Although we enjoyed our dinner, the service was quite lacking. The meal is supposed to be served in courses, but ours came all together. We were told that this was due to training, but it affected the dinner. We had to ask after the fact for that famous cornbread and tea that was never offered. Our server, in particular, who was a young man and presumably learning, was terrible. He had no interpersonal skills and cleared clumsily before we were ready. The food was quite good, but not neccesarily as good as I had hoped. My beef wellington had a lovely depth of flavor, for example, but the pastry was soggy. And the stracciatella appetizer, while yummy, did not have the complexity of flavours that the menu suggested. We enjoyed our meal, but will most likely try something different next time we are wanting a special night out.
We had a Saturday noon reservation to celebrate a family event and thoroughly enjoyed our food selections (sooo good!), the ambiance and cocktails. Our only complaint was that we were seated 15 minutes AFTER our noon reservation. After being seated, we received excellent service and food!
Please keep the fried chicken bucket, it’s delicious.
Love the cocktails.
Have been to Trummer’s many times but last few times, service has been very SLOW!!
But, again, love this place and glad they are our local restaurant .
If weather permits, try the seating on the patio. The setting is lovely. Trummer's menu is varied and offers something for everyone. The crated cocktails are first rate. My personal favorite is the Sage. The attached photo is of the Tuna Poke starter and it was delicious.
Exquisite. I only need one word. It’s great for a special occasion.
Attention to detail in every aspect. Comfortable seating, attentive staff, complimentary appetizer & dessert samples, lovely décor & delicious entrees. Only complaint is the NY Strip Steak portion was very small.
Even though I specified that this was a birthday on the reservation, there was no acknowledgment of this at the meal. Also, the entrees came out an hour after the appetizers. The excuse of having three dining rooms open at once was given. The problem with that is that there were only about 4 small parties in each room. Apparently the staff saw no issue and offered no explanation; we had to ask. No apologies and no comps were offered either. Very disappointed about this experience.
Fabulous, as usual! We did the five course vegetarian menu to celebrate Vegetarian Week, and it was innovative and delicious. One of our favorite restaurants, and Trummer’s never disappoints.
This is the second time we have dined during Vegetarian Week. The food choices were excellent and they were able to prepare the dishes for my wife in a gluten-free manner. We did the 5-course tasting menu with the wine pairing. The wines were excellent and were the perfect complement to the food. The service was outstanding. We will definitely be back next time.
It was my wife's and my anniversary and we had Patrick as our server. The service was exceptional, Patrick took special care that everything was cooked to the exact specifications as my wife is 32 weeks pregnant, the food was amazing. We had the Chef's 5 course meal. The presenation of each dish was a work of art. We were completely full at the end. A great experience!
I don’t give many 5 stars but this one surely is a Bst in Class in my mind. Located in tiny historic Clifton, VA (pop. 282) this restaurant was formerly a hotel. It is next to the railroad tracks and has a large parking lot but is an easy walk from anywhere in town. I ordered the Halibut and was expecting just an ordinary whitefish meal. This was Halibut from Heaven with a terrific sauce. They also serve a homemade bread with sauces. I had 6 excellent oysters as an appetizer. The waiter suggested an excellent Pinot Grigio that was perfect. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable, and the service was attentive without being obtrusive. I hope that I get an opportunity to return for another meal.
A (5) star presentation but a (3) star execution. We had to ask for silverware twice, the french fries everyone raved about were cold. The portions were a joke, at first I thought their prefix would be to much for our toddler when I fact the portions were on part with he typically nightly meals. We've been here many times before as it's close to our home. We love the Clifton experience but Trummers is out of tune with the small town vibe. If they were in DC, maybe but I don't think they'd last because their food isn't 5 star. If you're going for a cocktail then you'll be happy.
We booked online based on viewing their normal brunch menu shown online. It was not clear there was a fixed menu pricing for Mother’s Day with a required $75 per person fixed 3 course menu at the time we booked via the open table app. Once we were seated, We were told the regular menu was not available. At $25 per course, the food was not that good, very over priced Mother’s Day menu. The ambience is nice, but at the end of the day it is an old building next to the train tracks in Clifton. Not worth the exuberant pricing when trying to treat a party of 5 for a Mother’s Day brunch. Never again.
We loved the food and service but it does seem that there was a more limited menu than the last time we were there which would make it hard to go with friends that are more picky with food. Not a place to go if you are counting calories. However, if you are looking to have a delicious, creative, meal with excellent service and atmosphere, I would highly recommend.
Food was cold and it took a long time for dinner to arrive
Took our mothers here for an early Mother's Day celebration. It was my second time at Trummers and everything was amazing. The main dining room is very beautiful and our parents, who are normally picky eaters, were very impressed with their meals and drinks. The Titanic is worth ordering!
Chef Jon is amazing! We have visited several times in the last couple of months. Our absolute favorite restaurant...because this new chef never disappoints! As "foodies", we virtually always get the chef's tasting. Each time we think, "Now, THIS time is even better than before" - but, when we return, we are blown away all over again. Pastry chef Meaghan provides, in our opinion, the best fine dining desserts we've had. We love the new outdoor patio. Though we just dined at Trummers a couple of nights ago, we're already planning our next visit.
I've been wanting to try Trummers, and I am so glad I went while my father was visiting. The service was impeccable. The hostess was extremely gracious and helpful. Our waiter/assistant waiter were very personable. The sommelier was very good at her job. I enjoyed the little extras added to the meal. The food was wonderful. The shrimp and grits was the best entree. The duck was unique and flavorful. I ordered the steak, which they sous vide, which I had never tried before. It had a prime rib texture, and flavor, that was delicious, but not "steak" tasting. I still ate every bit. The bill at the end was surprisingly lower than expected.
I took my mom here for mother’s day and was pleasantly surprised by how good the food was. We had the tasting menu and it was just as enjoyable as some higher end restaurants I’ve gone too. I definitely recommend it. The price is unbeatable
The food and ambiance were excellent. The service was average. For example, when I made the reservations I wrote that is was our anniversary. When we got to the restaurant the hostess wished us a happy anniversary, but that was the end. We expected some recognition from the restaurant in the form of a complementary glass of champagne or complementary food/dessert item; not expensive just an acknowledgment. We received nothing.
At the end of the meal we asked for two of the same after dinner drinks. We were told they only had enough for one because this was the last of the bottle. I requested that mine be served in a snifter and warmed. The waiter responded that the remaining cordial was at room temperature. I explained I understood that but I would like mine slightly warmed up. The waiter responded how do you do that? I eventually go t the drink in a snifter and it was warm, but the outside of the glass was sticky, as if the liqueur had spilled on the outside of the glass.
These are very small complaints in an otherwise very enjoyable evening. The appetizer and dessert that we shared were excellent and the entrees were also. But a restaurant of this caliber and price range should pay greater attention to the details of customer service.
As always, totally outstanding. The salmon with the grain and peas was prepared superbly.
Service was impeccable, food was beautifully presented and delicious.
Bar cocktails excellent and creative
Food was delicious, good variety on menu. Perfect Dining experience for something special or just to have a treat.
