We really loved our dinner. The food was absolutely delicious. And their extensive menu made it difficult to choose! Unfortunately there was no A/C and by the time we left I couldn't wait to get out of there. It was extremely hot - just a ceiling fan blowing hot air around. To be clear, there was a ductless A/C unit that apparently died that evening. So we'd like to return, but we'll wait for the cooler weather.🙂
We had reservations for a party of 5 at 7 pm. The restaurant was understaffed and harried. We were seated half an hour after the time of our reservation. They were obviously short staffed and overwhelmed, had a guy in shorts and flip flops working on the floor, looked like they'd called him in from the beach. All that I could have forgiven (I've worked in restaurants and know what can happen when workers don't show up), but the volume in the restaurant was intolerable. The room was small and there was a boisterous party of 6 or so seated in the opposite corner. We couldn't have any kind of conversation, even with the person directly next to us. By the end of the meal all our heads were ringing. We stumbled out the door and sat down to rest and finish our wine at an empty table. As we sat there, other customers came out looking as dazed as we felt. The people seated at other tables outside didn't have the problem with the volume but said the service was terrible.
Totaros knocks it outta the park. Love the atmosphere and friendly staff. Remember to byow. But it was an enjoyable night.
Great dinner! Super loud place so hard to talk to anyone however the food is excellent!
Small crowd at lunch. Food and service were very good.
My second time there for lunch and certainly will go again. Easy place to talk and never felt in a rush to get out.
Plenty of menu choices available
One of these times I will get dessert.
We were seated as soon as we arrived. Each person in our party got something different. I had the vegetable lasagne: the portion was huge and it was delicious. I can't stop thinking about it. I need to go back soon!
everything was delicious, but it was very hot in the restaurant
We sat outside so we could converse, super noisy inside. Bridget was our waitress, service was amazing especially for it only being her second day. Dinner was outstanding, we can’t wait to go back
The best. Must try dishes are the Lobster Raviolis, the Vegetable Lasagna, and the Veal Chop. Don’t forget to try their homemade olive oil.
Great food personal service wonderful old country atmosphere. Family owned and run. This is a must try restaurant.
The food is amazing and the staff is awesome and so friendly!
Great food!!! Will go back again! Everyone loved their meal
Restaurant does not have ample AC for a warm summer night. Lamb special was great. Halibut special too salty and dry
Nothing but good things to say. A terrific experience, we will be back again soon.
Some things never change.......and in the case of Trattoria Totaro, that's wonderful! It's still the same simple little place with the same wonderful family at the helm and the same incredible menu. The salads are huge and beautiful, with a burrata daily special leading the way for me. My wife loves the mussels, and our friends started with TT's signature nuts & berry salad. The barramundi desperada (olive oil, garlic, capes, anchovies, spicy marinara over house-made pasta) was apparently excellent, since my wife couldn't spare a bit for me. Fortunately, my spicy sausage and peppers on pasta was as large as it was excellent, so I was fine without a taste of hers. And our friends raved about their pasta dishes, to which I paid little attention because I was so engrossed in my own enjoyment. We've never had less than a great time here!
The menu has a lot of choices. All great food. The place has nice miruals on the walls. The staff very friendly and helpful. The specials were very well presented.
Consistently good. Every choice is delicious. Very nice attentive staff that works as a team. It's easier to get a table in the Summer.
I've wanted to try this restaurant for a long time and boy am I glad I did. The food was outstanding everything tasted fresh and homemade. The fish was prepared perfectly. Definitely try the lemon cake homemade and just delicious. I will definitely try this again. The sooner the better
Fabulous food. Great service. Outdoor seating. BYOB
This meal was an excellent experience from start to finish. The service was perfect. We were given all the time we needed even though we were slow to pay attention to the menus because we were catching up with friends. The specials sounded great and were well described. The food was excellent. Everyone was very happy with their meals. One thing that was so unusual...the restaurant was full and everyone there was happy and friendly and enjoying themselves. To me that was a credit to the staff as they were welcoming and friendly and excellent hosts.
Absolutely loved it! The food was wonderful and we stayed til closing. We appreciated not being rushed and having the time to enjoy. Would highly recommend.
I usually don't go out for lunch since I bring my lunch to work. I have been to Totaro's on at least 6 different occasions. I have never been disappointed, and the friends I have gone with enjoy it also. The service is a standout, with staff remembering the regulars which is always a sign of a great place.
Trattoria Totaro is a hidden gem of a restaurant, the staff makes you feel like you're the only patrons there and the quality and freshness of the food is unquestionable. For any special occasion or just want to treat yourself, you can't go wrong here. Sat outside on a prefect weather evening and ordered the buratta appetizer, which was delightful and then the shrimp and crab pasta dish which was delicious. The key lime pie was as good as I've ever had to boot. Highly recommend TT!
Excellent as always
We had 2 shrimp dishes and calamari for appetizers that were very good. My party had the veal chop, surf and turf and the crab and shrimp pasta, all very good. The fresh homemade pasta is a definite plus. Our server was great, attentive and very personable.
The food is ridiculously good for the price for lunch. Salad size was larger than most for the cost of what most restaurants charge for a side salad. We reserved a table ahead on Open Table, total number of tables is small but food is so good I wanted to make sure we had a table at lunch time.
Great family, local restaurant. We have never been disappointed. It”s noisy but happy. Shrimp and swordfish were very good.
This was our first try at Trattoria Totaro. It's small and because it's BYOB, there is no bar to wait for your table. If there weather is nice, you can wait outside. It was pouring rain so we had to crowd inside for 40 minutes (although we were on time for our Sat. night 8:30 reservation). It appeared there were only 2 servers for both rooms. People must have really enjoyed themselves because they were glued to their seats!
The menu is extensive and huge! The first starter we ordered, the lobster ravioli they were out of, so we ordered the garlic clams to share. They were delicious. The sauce was perfect for dipping the homemade bread, which unfortunately was so good, it filled you up for the next course. The main courses are HUGE. I had the whole branzino over linguine with crab and my husband had veal vivian? Both were good, just too much. We took more than half of each home for dinner the next night (we switched who ate what). Although we were stuffed from our entrees we found room to snarf down a shared perfect piece of key lime pie for dessert! Not a crumb was left.
After two very large parties left the restaurant the noise level abated and then they put on overhead music, way too loud to drown out conversation! We could have done without the music. Overall, we enjoyed the food, could have done with smaller portions. Felt bad for the servers. It's kinda of an old fashioned Italian family run restaurant I remember from growing up. I would have preferred less choice, smaller portions, and quieter. Then they would have gotten five stars.
TOO NOISY impossible to talk wont go back
The food is incredible. All four of us loved our dishes. Flavors were perfect. Amazing. Friendly service. It is loud because it is always crowded. But worth it. Go.
Hopefully it was an off night for the restaurant. Service was poor at best. Large menu with options. Entrees are sizable; minor up charge for sharing. A good red gravy joint
Everything was excellent except we had to wait 45 minutes for our food once our order was taken.
had an 8:00 reservation and were not seated until 9:15. They apologized but never offered us anything in compensation. We pre-ordered our appetizers while waiting and still waited another 10 minutes to be served. We had the Veal Vivian and Bolognese Pasta. The veal was very tender but was just a mix of bland flavors and would have been much better with just a simple sauce such as piccata. The veal was lost in the mush of ingredients. The Bolognese was flavorful but so disappointing in the fact that it was served with an angel hair pasta, so we were basically eating the Bolognese sauce with a pasta lacking flavor or texture. It was the first time I have ever been served Bolognese that wasn’t with spaghetti, penne or a traditional tagliatelle.
Maybe they were having an off night in the kitchen but the lack of concern from the staff (never saw any management) was disappointing. At least it was a BYOB restaurant so we enjoyed some nice Brunello, so the evening was not ruined. It was just sad that no one offered us a treat from the kitchen or a free dessert, that would be the norm in quality establishments. We will not be going back or recommending Trattoria Totaro but the good news is Philadelphia has some of the best Italian food I have had outside of Italy , so plenty to choose from.
Food & Service both Outstanding
I've been to parties here also. They do a tremendous job!
Perfect neighborhood spot for home cooked Italian food- their pasta is amazing! All of it. And Grandma's home cakes for dessert... highly recommend this relaxed BYOB. Always make a reservation as it is a small restaurant. They also can easily accommodate large parties with enough advance notice.
Fabulous food and service as always! We especially love the homemade pasta and the fact that it’s byob!
Never disappointed always fresh and delicious. A tiny place with a big wow. Menu is very extensive.
There were 2 larger parties in the room that were very loud. It was difficult to have a conversation. Otherwise it was great.
They do make some of 'em like they used to - TT is one of the few places you can still go to get top quality house made dishes prepared and presented by people who care about you and about what they do. The rooms are "rustic" to be sure - this is a simple neighborhood Italian restaurant like they all oughtta be! The four of us split orders of mussels, calimari, and clams before enjoying our main courses. Everything was outstanding - an order each of osso bucco, pork chop, pescatore, and pasta left us very happy (and with barely enough room for 2 orders of cannoli). Wonderful as always!
