About Tratto

A spirited, bar-driven restaurant serving rustic Italian fare with modern sensibilities. Tratto means the stroke of a pen or a mark in Italian, nodding to both the neighborhood’s artistic history and the name of The Marker, the boutique hotel next door.

Tratto’s flavorful menu of simple, delicious and shareable dishes coupled with casual, communal-style dining creates a neighborhood bar experience inspired by the Italian tradition of “aperitivo,” or happy hour.

Guests can enjoy playful twists on classic Italian cocktails, boozy Italian sodas, and beer and wine from California and Italy, including a jug of house wine from the taps.

Choose from a wide selection of traditional small-plate antipasti, house-made pastas and pizzas, entrees served family-style, seasonal side dishes, and classic Italian desserts including ice creams, gelatos and sorbets.

We used to love the Grand Cafe, so it was fun to see what Tratto did to the space. I like the feel but it sure was noisy. Too noisy. The four of us couldn't understand each other. It did quiet down after a noisy table left. (Note to the restaurant: ever look at two mirrors that meet in a corner? Your image is always in the middle. Same concept for sound; corners are the sound reflector, not the big flat walls. If you want to solve the problem, put something in the corners.)

Ambience other than noise, great. Food was quite good. Butter beans were excellent. Steak decent. Whole fish was well-cooked and tasty. Service was reasonable. Not great, but not bad. The pacing, the rhythm was subtly off, so there was always a sense of delay or rush, but neither was particularly extreme in our experience. My wife and I would go again if it was the two of us. But a table of four? Probably not if we want to converse.

A lively Italian bar/restaurant in the downtown Theatre district.
An extensive menu including fresh homemade pasta, with large portions. A good choice of cocktails, wine and beers too.
We had the minestrone soup bursting with vegetables, spinach tagliatelle and pappardelle, all served quickly by efficient smiling servers.
Highly recommended for an economically priced satisfying meal

It was awesome - despite being quite chilly with a breeze crossing several tables near the door. Servers were friendly and the food was fresh and enjoyable. Only piece of feedback: nobody noticed for 5 minutes that I didn’t have cutlery to eat my meal with.

The fettuccine sea food pasta bowl was amazing! The service was great! The special cheese and meat tray was bland. The meats were bland.. the pickled peppers were amazing! The plate needed some chuntey .. otherwise the night was great! The drinks were good too..

Wow what a great place for the price. We had great service, fresh food, and decent wine selection. We went here twice during our 5 night stay in SF. Neat little find. A tad noisy but it's a bar like setting. Don't expect James Beard. Make a reservation

Food was very good. The service was rather spotty. I asked if the bartender knew how to make a certain drink and the waiter disappeared for a long time and seemed to disappear frequently. However, I would go back again, it was good food and pretty quick for a pre-theater dinner.

This is what happens when the concept of Italian food gets interrupted by American food and further confused by the concept of tapas - super weird and not very good. Focaccia - horrible. Meatball appetizer mediocre at best. Orecchiette/sausage entree - reminiscent of a soup at Olive Garden - no kidding. The fried chicken thighs were very tasty - the lemon made all the difference - but this was an entree and it came with nothing other than the chicken. Finally - the cappuccino was terrible. I would not go back - there are too many other choices within 3 blocks that should surely be better ...

One star deduction on service and the ambiance was nonexistent because of the hostess who put us on the end table behind the plant next to the one chatty table in the restaurant. There were tons of tables open at 6:00pm (the next table didn't arrive until 6:35pm) so why did you give us the worst table in the restaurant right next to another couple? Wait service was awesome. Food was great. Difficult to say if I will return due to

In the heart of the San Francisco theatre district, Tratto is the perfect place to dine. We arrived an hour before our reservation time, and they found a way to get us a nice table. Jacqui, our server, couldn't have been more accommodating. The real good news is when the check comes -everything was most reasonably priced.

Reasonably priced menu. Nothing spectacular but the food was good for a simple dinner before a show at ACT one block away. Shrimp crostini, steak and butter lettuce salad with crispy pork belly were all quite good. Service was quick. Lots of families and tourists staying in the hotel seemed to be eating here.

After drinks with friends from Los Angeles we were hungry but didn't want to drive, uber or walk far. What to do What to do. Formerly called Hotel Monaco, now called Axiom it was convenient choice for where we came from (Bourbon and Bramble) and I made a reservation that night. We walked a block and ta da! The menu was very limited in choices which actually comes in handy when you had a couple of drinks. We all made some choices, I shared a decadent mushroom pizza, and my friends were happy as can be with the skirt steak and fired chicken. My friends husband was accommodated with his unusual Spanish drink of half Coke Cola and half red wine. The service was excellent!

Large group event. Service was slow and our server was never to be found. Unsure if it was due to the fact that there's an automatic 20% gratuity (which is relatively steep), or just incompetence - probably a mix of the two.

My food was good, but some of my dining partner's dishes were just okay. I had the gnocchi, and they had the risotto.

Desserts were good, but the olive oil cake was dry and crumbly. I would've said something but, like I said, our server was nowhere to be found - luckily, we knew he'd take his time so we got the check with dessert.

I was absolutely BLOWN AWAY by this restaurant. My friends and I are from Canada and we felt so at home here. The food was delicious and fresh; the location was superb; and the servers were some of the nicest people ever. They went above and beyond and my friends and I agreed it was one of our trip highlights. Will gladly come again next time I visit SF.

We were in from out of town and enjoyed a nice dinner -- all four of us, two adults and two preteens, shared pizzas, salads, and the meatball app. For a dinner downtown, it was not too pricey and everything was well-prepared and tasty. Our server was attentive and informative, even on a busy evening. With the advent of non-descript "authentic pizza" chains that cater to families, this restaurant is a welcome relief.

We had a wonderful server, and the food was good, not great. However, the experience for the four of us was absolutely ruined by the extraordinary noise level. The hard surfaces and the fact that there is no barrier between the bar and the dining tables left us unable to talk at our table - we literally could not hear ourselves think. And we were dining at what I usually think of as a "safe" early hour - 5:45 pm before the theater. We won't return until this is somehow remedied - perhaps with sound barriers or ceiling panels. It's a shame because it is perfectly located for pre- and post- theater dining.

The food here was SUPERB. Nothing was over- or undercooked. We came on a Thursday evening, and the server was a little slow, but we could see she was very busy attending to two other tables at the same time she was waiting on ours. I'll be back to try some additional dishes.

We were pleasantly surprised to find a childrens' menu, special placemats, and crayons in the heart of San Francisco. Our grandchildren devoured the meatballs, pizza, pasta, and gelato. Also, pleased that milk was available. The grandparents also enjoyed our pasta and wine after a cool cable car ride. Great value and a perfect place to span the tastes of generations. Highly recommended.
