About Tratto

A spirited, bar-driven restaurant serving rustic Italian fare with modern sensibilities. Tratto means the stroke of a pen or a mark in Italian, nodding to both the neighborhood’s artistic history and the name of The Marker, the boutique hotel next door.

Tratto’s flavorful menu of simple, delicious and shareable dishes coupled with casual, communal-style dining creates a neighborhood bar experience inspired by the Italian tradition of “aperitivo,” or happy hour.

Guests can enjoy playful twists on classic Italian cocktails, boozy Italian sodas, and beer and wine from California and Italy, including a jug of house wine from the taps.

Choose from a wide selection of traditional small-plate antipasti, house-made pastas and pizzas, entrees served family-style, seasonal side dishes, and classic Italian desserts including ice creams, gelatos and sorbets.

Everything about Tratto was great, starting with $5 Peronis! Service was warm and friendly, food was TASTY and the location for a show at the Curran was perfect. Will definitely return.

Meatball appetizer okay, meatballs not too dense, sauce could use more flavor. Olive oil cake had a dry coarse texture , first time trying it so maybe that’s what it’s supposed to the like, faint lemon flavor, accompaniments of whipped cream, caramelized pears delicious. Cup of decaf coffee ok. Total for coffee, appetizer & dessert, including taxes & tip, $30. Pricey for me but pre-theater 3-course dinner special for $30 may be a better option, will try it next time.

We decided to try Tratto for dinner since it was right down the street from the Curran Theater. We had a great server, Alan, and tried two different cocktails: the "Sicilian Rye" and the "Tratto", which was a very smooth Old Fashioned with housemade Limoncello added. For dinner, both the arugula salad and the butter salad were fresh and delicious. The hands-down favorite of our dinners was the fried chicken thighs. My daughter is a picky eater and had ordered the pizza margarita, but once she tried the chicken she said, "I should have gotten that!" We ordered the donut holes for dessert, and they were just the right amount for three of us, and came with an exquisite bourbon caramel sauce.

We had a reservation for 5:00pm,but our play end an hour earlier. They went ahead and sat us in the bar area and offered a limited menu with about 10 or 12 items - we picked one from the 3-catagories. We had a little gem/green Goddess salad, spicy fried chicken wings and a pizza Margarita to split. All very good, especially the salad, and reasonably priced. I'd love to go back for lunch or dinner for the homemade pasta.

Great food and cocktails - fun place, but it was our anniversary and too lively for a romantic date. Wine is over-priced, but we brought our own and corkage fee was fine. We didn't let the noise and liveliness diminish our enjoyment of the meal.

Really poor service. We had to wait for 20 minutes after being seated to get anyone’s attention. Then too we had three different servers helping us. Food was heavy and greasy and nothing to write home about.

Service was okay. You have to pay for bread even when ordering multiple appetizers. Strange for an upscale Italian place. Good food and ambiance though. Hand made pasta was so good. Also, recommend the meatball appetizer. Good value for high quality food.

We visited Tratto before a performance at the Curran, and it was a nice place for an uncomplicated dinner. The ambiance of the place is kind of 'modern day Roma' in San Francisco. They projected a silent, black and white, 50-ish film on the wall over the bar that had something to do with Italy, and that was an interesting and unique visual diversion. Fully seated, as it was last night, the place can get quite noisy, though. There were several tables of large groups being accomodated, so clearly Tratto is a place for a family or group gatherings.

The menu is interesting, but not memorable. It might take another visit or two to find some favorites in it. My Lemon Fettuchine was over-cooked. The seafood was sparse and chewy. Not at all the way seafood is, and should be, done in SF. The "fettuchine" was a gelatinous mass of fused-together egg noodles. All-in-all, not very appetizing. My wife ordered the baked polenta with shirred egg, and that was much better prepared, as was her wild arugula salad. She really enjoyed both of them. The focaccia we shared was quite good, and the warm, marinated olives were an interesting and welcome taste. I would like to have tried the minestrone soup, but as it's only served in a full bowl and I was that hungry, I passed. An option for a cup of it as an appetizer or to accompany other small plates might be an idea to consider. The dessert menu was also interesting, and I very much enjoyed the panna cotta with a single espresso. My wife enjoyed the gelato.

But best of all was the service. With a 6 pm reservation, we were seated immediately upon arrival. Our server, Rochelle, was very pleasant and welcoming. She explained several menu items, and made welcome suggestions to meet our time constraints and hunger levels. Service was continuously attentive by the rest of the staff, and Rochelle saw to it that we were on time leaving for the theater. We'd gladly return again to Tratto and would recommend it to others.

The service was reasonably good, but, for the price, the overall experience was lacking. It's been over a week, so I don't really remember that well. That says something. There are places with similar cost that I'd much prefer like Marlow.

The food here is very good, very authentic homemade Italian. No fussy pretenses. The platter to share idea is a good one...very homestyle. We ordered the fish and roasted potato platter and the chicken cacciatore and pasta platter. Both very tasty. Wait staff was attentive and friendly. Good place for pre or post theater.

Went here on a date and were not disappointed. The pizza (salami) is ahhhmazing. Loved every bite! The pasta is fresh and has interesting flavors. I didn’t expect the flavor combinations at all but it really worked. The pasta is fresh and delicious, served in large portions. The donuts for dessert were fluffy and delicious. However, we got the meatballs as an appetizer and it was pretty underwhelming for a $9 price tag. Two average size meatballs with ciabbatta. They were meh. The service was amazing. Overall a great meal.

Upon arrival, early, for our reservation we stood in from of the employee at the hostess stand for a full minute before having to say, "Excuse me" to get her attention. she was just standing there and staring at the computer.
An Italian restaurant that does not put bread on the table? No mater, we ordered some and it never arrived. Service was unbelievably slow and unorganized.
Food was unremarkable. Could have done without this experience. Was dinner after a show and on our anniversary and it was a waste of time.

Great food but the room was a little loud. Waiter Allen was very good. Hostess told me she could not break up table along the wall for a table for two. Shortly after we sat down, she did just that for three other couples.

The service started out good. The waiter was attentive and my son was extremely hungry so the waiter brought his food out immediately. We had some questions on a couple of dishes so when the manager came by we asked him about what the ingredients in a couple of dishes were and he did not seem to know. I ended up ordering the squash ravioli. The ravioli was not made fresh, it tasted like it was cooked from frozen. I asked the same manager if I could get some fresh Parmesan for my ravioli and he said, "we do not have fresh Parmesan". Really? You are an overpriced Italian restaurant and you have no fresh Parmesan? I was not even upset at this point, I was actually enjoying our night out and even though things were not perfect, I was having a nice night. Here is what made me mad. My husband took my son to the restroom, so I paid the bill while they were gone. The waiter came back saying my card was declined. I knew something was wrong because I had plenty of money in the bank. I am not going to stay at a Westin and eat at expensive restaurants if I am even close to not having plenty of money to fund a trip. Anyways, I called my bank and the bank told me to tell the waiter to run it again because there were no issues on my side. The waiter ran it again and there was no problem. In the mean time, my husband and son had come back. I told my husband what was going on and he said, I could not figure out why the manager, waiter, and two other men followed us to the bathroom and then waited for them to return to the table. I completely understand that this is a big city and perhaps things like this have happened before but the whole situation just felt disgusting to me and I would never return to this restaurant again.

We used to love the Grand Cafe, so it was fun to see what Tratto did to the space. I like the feel but it sure was noisy. Too noisy. The four of us couldn't understand each other. It did quiet down after a noisy table left. (Note to the restaurant: ever look at two mirrors that meet in a corner? Your image is always in the middle. Same concept for sound; corners are the sound reflector, not the big flat walls. If you want to solve the problem, put something in the corners.)

Ambience other than noise, great. Food was quite good. Butter beans were excellent. Steak decent. Whole fish was well-cooked and tasty. Service was reasonable. Not great, but not bad. The pacing, the rhythm was subtly off, so there was always a sense of delay or rush, but neither was particularly extreme in our experience. My wife and I would go again if it was the two of us. But a table of four? Probably not if we want to converse.

A lively Italian bar/restaurant in the downtown Theatre district.
An extensive menu including fresh homemade pasta, with large portions. A good choice of cocktails, wine and beers too.
We had the minestrone soup bursting with vegetables, spinach tagliatelle and pappardelle, all served quickly by efficient smiling servers.
Highly recommended for an economically priced satisfying meal

This is what happens when the concept of Italian food gets interrupted by American food and further confused by the concept of tapas - super weird and not very good. Focaccia - horrible. Meatball appetizer mediocre at best. Orecchiette/sausage entree - reminiscent of a soup at Olive Garden - no kidding. The fried chicken thighs were very tasty - the lemon made all the difference - but this was an entree and it came with nothing other than the chicken. Finally - the cappuccino was terrible. I would not go back - there are too many other choices within 3 blocks that should surely be better ...

One star deduction on service and the ambiance was nonexistent because of the hostess who put us on the end table behind the plant next to the one chatty table in the restaurant. There were tons of tables open at 6:00pm (the next table didn't arrive until 6:35pm) so why did you give us the worst table in the restaurant right next to another couple? Wait service was awesome.
