About Tratto

A spirited, bar-driven restaurant serving rustic Italian fare with modern sensibilities. Tratto means the stroke of a pen or a mark in Italian, nodding to both the neighborhood’s artistic history and the name of The Marker, the boutique hotel next door.

Tratto’s flavorful menu of simple, delicious and shareable dishes coupled with casual, communal-style dining creates a neighborhood bar experience inspired by the Italian tradition of “aperitivo,” or happy hour.

Guests can enjoy playful twists on classic Italian cocktails, boozy Italian sodas, and beer and wine from California and Italy, including a jug of house wine from the taps.

Choose from a wide selection of traditional small-plate antipasti, house-made pastas and pizzas, entrees served family-style, seasonal side dishes, and classic Italian desserts including ice creams, gelatos and sorbets.

I am disappointed with the design and ambiance of the restaurant. It looked and felt much more comfortable and pleasant with the previous design when it was Grand Cafe. Now it looks very basic and simple.
The other problem was with the service. We made reservations for 5 people and I indicated in advance that it was my wife's B-day and asked for a small cake with one candle. When we arrived right on time, there was no place prepared for us and they had to scramble to put some tables together in front of us standing there. There was no cake and no Happy B-day song for my wife at all, so we left disappointed.

Overall good value, great cocktail, BTG list and nibbles/snacks. We had several appertivos, snacked, and appetizers. Only issue was we ordered a bottle of wine with our entres and by the time the wine came out, we had already finished our meal. Really didn't want the bottle of wine and the server didn't quite got it when I sent it back. Would have been nice to have a glass of wine with our entres.

Came here (again) for dinner and breakfast the next morning. Their breakfast is as good as their dinner! We had Andrea as our dinner server. She’s great! Breakfast was more quiet, but everyone is nice and helpful. Love it here!

Dinner date for NYE, food was good. Service was terrible, our waitress would constantly forget to give us a bunch of things that she said she would get right away. It wasn’t that busy in there so I don’t know what was going on with her.

New Years Eve dinner before the symphony. Our server, Andrea, was helpful and prompt, when we told her our plans. The food is fresh and delicious. They have old Italian movies screening in the bar area, which gives one something to look at if they are alone. The place has people watching windows and it's not cramped when you walk through the room to go to the bathroom. We love it here!

Two notes to be aware of, first this restaurant is located inside the Hotel Marker. Second, the dining room does not open until 5 p.m.. The decor and ambience are fun, the hotel is actually quite nice, so overall the experience is kind of interesting. The food was very good, with a nice variety of Italian dishes including Pizza, Pasta, and all the usual items. Service was solid, they do not rush you but are attentive enough that you don't feel ignored. Prices are about what you would expect from a good Italian restaurant in San Francisco. One note for future reference, their house red wine was outstanding. Not sure what it was, but if they use the same one consistently I can highly recommend it! Over all a nice meal if you are looking for something in that area of the city without breaking the bank.

Well prepared modern Italian cuisine. The music was a little loud for easy conversation. They turned it down eventually. Attractive decor. Enthusiastic service. Deftly made cocktails. Fine dining for before or after theater.

My daughters and me enjoyed a lovely dinner and drinks while we visited Union Square the day before Christmas Eve and finished up on some last minute shopping. Food was good and played nicely. If you want a side dish, you'll have to order it as it does not come with the entree. We ordered fresh vegetables and shared the side. A little noisy on that night with the holiday rush so maybe it's not as noisy on other nights. That would be a huge plus!

We went to Tratto after the theater. We were seated promptly in the back of the restaurant which was much quieter than the main dining room. The butternut squash ravioli and lamb gnocchi was very good as was the mushroom pizza. We ordered a burger and it was under cooked. Overall, a very positive experience with great service.

Service was superb. WE had the tasting menu, which was a bargain, but the first 3 dishes were meh. The whole roasted trout and lobster risotto and dessert made up for it though.

Cute spot a bit away from the noise of Union Square.

It’s just an okay place. Typically hotel restaurant food and atmosphere. I wouldnt recommend it.

Food okay, nothing good to say about it. Desert olive cake was dry as a bone. Steak okay, mussels okay, calamari decent.

Dinner before “A Christmas Carol” at ACT. Being a few minutes early before our reservation, we were seated at a bar hi-top. We had a drink and a tasty Happy Hour nibble (the flatbread was warm, incredibly soft and pillowy, and the greens, cheese, sun-dried tomatoes and garlic cloves wonderfully tasty) before being moved to our table. We ordered three different pasta dishes: Lemon Pappardelle with Shrimp, Calamari, Clams, and Mussels; Spinach Tagliatelle with Meat Sauce; and Gnocchi with Spicy Lamb Ragu; all were swiftly prepared and served, good portion size, fresh and delicious.

The waiter and all staff were friendly, courteous, and efficient. Our only negative for the night: my lady asked for a cup of half-caf coffee before dinner. As coffee had not yet been prepared, our wait person offered to make a half-caf Americano. At the end of the evening, we realized that we had been charged for literally two full Americanos to make the half-caf—to the tune of $12. The beverage was good, but not anywhere worth the cost of two quad-shot lattes! A bit of thoroughly unnecessary highway robbery there which should have been otherwise mitigated.

mediocre polenta starter--adding salt helped, but still not great. my steak--ordered medium was overcooked and tiny--3 oz? my boyfriend's fish was way too acidic/lemony. a bummer, because we were hoping we'd finally found a decent pre-theater restaurant. no such luck.

Meatball appetizer okay, meatballs not too dense, sauce could use more flavor. Olive oil cake had a dry coarse texture , first time trying it so maybe that’s what it’s supposed to the like, faint lemon flavor, accompaniments of whipped cream, caramelized pears delicious. Cup of decaf coffee ok. Total for coffee, appetizer & dessert, including taxes & tip, $30. Pricey for me but pre-theater 3-course dinner special for $30 may be a better option, will try it next time.

We decided to try Tratto for dinner since it was right down the street from the Curran Theater. We had a great server, Alan, and tried two different cocktails: the "Sicilian Rye" and the "Tratto", which was a very smooth Old Fashioned with housemade Limoncello added. For dinner, both the arugula salad and the butter salad were fresh and delicious. The hands-down favorite of our dinners was the fried chicken thighs. My daughter is a picky eater and had ordered the pizza margarita, but once she tried the chicken she said, "I should have gotten that!" We ordered the donut holes for dessert, and they were just the right amount for three of us, and came with an exquisite bourbon caramel sauce.

We had a reservation for 5:00pm,but our play end an hour earlier. They went ahead and sat us in the bar area and offered a limited menu with about 10 or 12 items - we picked one from the 3-catagories. We had a little gem/green Goddess salad, spicy fried chicken wings and a pizza Margarita to split. All very good, especially the salad, and reasonably priced. I'd love to go back for lunch or dinner for the homemade pasta.

Great food and cocktails - fun place, but it was our anniversary and too lively for a romantic date. Wine is over-priced, but we brought our own and corkage fee was fine. We didn't let the noise and liveliness diminish our enjoyment of the meal.

Service was okay. You have to pay for bread even when ordering multiple appetizers. Strange for an upscale Italian place. Good food and ambiance though. Hand made pasta was so good. Also, recommend the meatball appetizer. Good value for high quality food.

We visited Tratto before a performance at the Curran, and it was a nice place for an uncomplicated dinner. The ambiance of the place is kind of 'modern day Roma' in San Francisco. They projected a silent, black and white, 50-ish film on the wall over the bar that had something to do with Italy, and that was an interesting and unique visual diversion. Fully seated, as it was last night, the place can get quite noisy, though. There were several tables of large groups being accomodated, so clearly Tratto is a place for a family or group gatherings.

The menu is interesting, but not memorable. It might take another visit or two to find some favorites in it. My Lemon Fettuchine was over-cooked. The seafood was sparse and chewy. Not at all the way seafood is, and should be, done in SF. The "fettuchine" was a gelatinous mass of fused-together egg noodles. All-in-all, not very appetizing. My wife ordered the baked polenta with shirred egg, and that was much better prepared, as was her wild arugula salad. She really enjoyed both of them. The focaccia we shared was quite good, and the warm, marinated olives were an interesting and welcome taste. I would like to have tried the minestrone soup, but as it's only served in a full bowl and I was that hungry, I passed. An option for a cup of it as an appetizer or to accompany other small plates might be an idea to consider. The dessert menu was also interesting, and I very much enjoyed the panna cotta with a single espresso. My wife enjoyed the gelato.

But best of all was the service. With a 6 pm reservation, we were seated immediately upon arrival. Our server, Rochelle, was very pleasant and welcoming. She explained several menu items, and made welcome suggestions to meet our time constraints and hunger levels. Service was continuously attentive by the rest of the staff, and Rochelle saw to it that we were on time leaving for the theater. We'd gladly return again to Tratto and would recommend it to others.

The service was reasonably good, but, for the price, the overall experience was lacking. It's been over a week, so I don't really remember that well. That says something. There are places with similar cost that I'd much prefer like Marlow.

The food here is very good, very authentic homemade Italian. No fussy pretenses. The platter to share idea is a good one...very homestyle. We ordered the fish and roasted potato platter and the chicken cacciatore and pasta platter. Both very tasty. Wait staff was attentive and friendly. Good place for pre or post theater.

Went here on a date and were not disappointed. The pizza (salami) is ahhhmazing. Loved every bite! The pasta is fresh and has interesting flavors. I didn’t expect the flavor combinations at all but it really worked. The pasta is fresh and delicious, served in large portions. The donuts for dessert were fluffy and delicious. However, we got the meatballs as an appetizer and it was pretty underwhelming for a $9 price tag. Two average size meatballs with ciabbatta. They were meh. The service was amazing. Overall a great meal.

Upon arrival, early, for our reservation we stood in from of the employee at the hostess stand for a full minute before having to say, "Excuse me" to get her attention. she was just standing there and staring at the computer.
An Italian restaurant that does not put bread on the table? No mater, we ordered some and it never arrived. Service was unbelievably slow and unorganized.
Food was unremarkable. Could have done without this experience. Was dinner after a show and on our anniversary and it was a waste of time.
