View Private Dining DetailsService was excellent and the bartender was very attentive! Liked her energy and all the recommendations on breakfast places to try!
We chose Tratto because the Curran Theater published them as a good place for pre-theater dining. When we checked in (with a 5:15 reservation), the restaurant only had a few diners. The
hostess initially tried to seat us at a less than desirable table (basically the entire restaurant was open). We requested a different seating for which she accommodated us. Our initial greeting was from a fellow (didn't know he wasn't our waiter) who didn't know about the special that was part of the Curran recommendation. He said he would find out. He did get back to us, but his English skills weren't too good; difficult to understand what he was telling us.
Eventually, a different waiter came who was knowledgeable. The service was OK, could have been better. We waited a little too long for our meal, possibly because the restaurant began filling up rather quickly. They probably were swamped with orders by that point. My dinner was excellent (chopped salad and canelloni). My husband's dinner (rockfish) was also excellent. We may go back, not sure yet. Their prices were quite reasonable.
First time I have been to this restaurant. Perfect for a meal before gong to the Curran. The staff was friendly and the service was great as well as our food. Definitely will go back.
Very good meal, fresh food, fun cocktails and vibrant setting. A real gem for this part of town (food wasteland). One thing to note was that our pasta was very mushy--overcooked-- which is a problem for a pasta restaurant, but if they correct that, it will be a sure winner.
Food was hit and miss. Wonderful italian doughnuts with a dipping sauce for dessert. Served warm. Focaccia bread was stale and the balsamic/oilve oil dipping sauce was bitter. Home made pasta is a good texture but the fillings were a bit stale. Attentive waitstaff.
Food was delicious. Location perfect. Ambiance lovely. We wished our waiter had been more attentive.
We had pre-theatre lunch. Location is perfect near ACT. We loved coming here when is was The Grand Cafe, it’s a very different restaurant in look, feel and food. Nonetheless it was great.
Many choices for both breakfast and lunch which is always appreciated on a weekend. Cool decor and lovely attentive service.
I wanted something nice near the Curran and I was thrilled to find this gem! The staff was friendly and attentive. The food was delicious! Everything is made fresh onsite. I had a burger - sounds ordinary, right? NO! It had freshly made tomato relish, prosciutto and a poached egg - fantastic! My date had the lemon linguine and loved it. I'm not a big dessert fan (don't judge!) but we splurged on the homemade Italian donuts with caramel sauce - hot, fluffy and so tasty we had to request more caramel sauce. I will definitely come back again!
Very nice for pre-theater dinner. Great service and good food.
Love the comfort food at Tratto!
Best option for pre-show dinner, in my opinion the best food near Curran/ACT/Golden Gate theater.
Only downside is that it's very loud, not necessarily loud patrons, I think it's actually the room acoustics.
The reviews on the web were very good and we chose Tratto based on its reputation and closeness to our hotel.
Alas we were disappointed with the food and quality of service.
Thank you Andrea for excellent service. We loved the place so we came back the next day. Kids loved the food and atmosphere. We will return again.
We had a very good meal there. My wife the butter lettuce salad and the meatballs, I had the chopped salad and the bolognese pasta. For dessert we had the donuts and some vanilla gelato. The Ghost Cabernet was tasty. We were surprised that it wasn’t busier but we had a good meal. Would go back for sure.
Great food; great service!
Great food , but slow service..
The restaurant was very noisy. One meal was not what was ordered. Wine was very expensive.
Great food and wine list, nice variety Italian food, not too much to overwhelm, creative and delicious. friendly knowledgeable staff, efficient service. We were going to the Geary theater, hardly a block away. Perfect.
The food is always consistently good here with some excellent cocktails. I've tried to replicate their old fashion at home with some help by waiter. The wait service is always extremely polite and ready to go a step beyond just helpful. It has become our "go to" place when we attend the local theatre.
Great food and great ambiance, not to mention being fabulously close to ACT and the Curran. Definitely a return destination spot!
We were visiting SF and looking for Italian within walking distance of our hotel. We booked based on good yelp reviews. The meatball and carpaccio small plates were delicious. The jug of wine for $30 was so good and every restaurant should do this. Not everyone wants to spend $45 for a bottle of wine. The donut dessert was to die for. Our gnocchi was a tad bland but once you added parm it was good.
My whole fam loved this Italian spot!! We would go back!
Reasonable, albeit fairly pedestrian, food and a very pleasant server saves this review from being much worse.
The attempt to update the Grand Cafe fails miserably, with the space transformed from what was admittedly "old school in need of an update" into "typical Union Square tourist trap". The charm is gone, replaced with a large square room with terrible acoustics and cheap-looking fixtures. The architect and interior designer appear to have had little experience in restaurant design, and one would assume from the result that it was done on a very tight budget.
As for the food, it's pitched for visitors who want the convenience of eating in their hotel while avoiding the higher and upper mid-priced restaurants in San Francisco. For the cost, it's OK - just don't expect a San Francisco foodie experience. The pictures try to paint a picture of a rival to Cotogna or Flour and Water, but the feel is more rather upscale Olive Garden.
If you're a visitor looking for a convenient location with OK fare, this might be for you. If you're a local foodie, I would suggest a pass.
Comfortable setting with good brunch/lunch menu. Reasonably priced, excellent service and noise level was great. Close to Geary and Curran Theaters-I would definitely return!
Service a bit haphazard but friendly. Food decent but also a bit patchy (both very good and ordinary). Very good value. Good choice for pre- and post- theater.
The dining experience was fun so it’s tough to rate it 3 stars. But the spare ribs were so salty they were inedible. No good restaurant should ever make that mistake.
The service was very attentive and friendly. The food was very good and exceeded our expectations - fresh and flavorful.
Food was great and the host helped a whole lot. Still not sure whether there was a waiter assigned to our table. Several employees mingled all night at the back - not clear who was a waiter vs busser -??
Luckily the host walked by as he was seating other tables, took our order, got me another glass of wine, etc. Somebody came by to ask about dessert and to provide the check. not sure it if that was the same person both times. either way, the food was yummy. invluding the fennel salad, lamb gnocci and tiramisu. Didn’t see the bill but the b/f said it was too expensive for not a very much food. His main was the chicken breast w polenta, and it did seem much less than my gnocci
All the pasta is made in house and delicious same thing for the desserts. Shaved pear pizza was amazing as well as the butternut squash ravioli.
Stefan the waiter was outstanding. We had dinner than he found us a spot for the live jazz
Loveeee! This place is incredible. Come for all of the cozy feelings and yummy food!
The restaurant was empty when we entered for a noon reservation so I was a bit concerned. Our server greeted us almost as we sat down. We ordered pizzas and pasta. Everyone said they liked their choices. We had the eggplant panini, baked orecchiette, spinach tagliatelle, shaved pear pizza and spiced salami pizza. The pizzas has nice thin crusts, just the way I like it. Clean plates generally are the sign that people liked their food. By the fine we left the restaurant was packed.
Food was great! Service was great! Value was great! Wished they had more of a selection of wines by the glass, especially for an Italian restaurant.
Picked Tratto for its proximity to an event and was pleasantly surprised by how nice the bartenders were and how good the food was. Will definitely return.
Nice place for a meal with tasty food, great service and relaxed atmosphere. Will return again.
Location in Theater District is great. Menu has good variation and wine list is solid.
Service was excellent and prices are very reasonable for SF dining.
One of the best truffle pizzas I’ve ever had! Will be back.
Went here with my husband for dinner and every single dish we got was on point. The meatballs and cauliflower appetizers were perfect and we each ordered the ravioli special with some sort of artichoke and lemon zest sauce and it was amazing. Light and flavorful. Highly recommend this place, just make sure you get a reservation because the walk-in wait is ridiculous. Oh, and request a table away from the door. It’s cold out there.
Delicious pasta in a great atmosphere. This was our one "fancy" dinner (we're young) while in San Fransisco and it was pretty amazing. The warm olives were delightful, both pasta dishes we ordered were just perfect and the mousse torte was out of this world (in fact, my only regret was we also ordered a tiramisu and if I could go back we would have ordered two tortes).
Found this place last minute and we are so glad we went! Ambiance was relaxed and elegant without being pretentious. We ordered some fantastic cocktails followed by some great food. Many pastas are made in house and the gnocchi was out of this world. Value for the food was hard to beat and GET DESSERT! The Italian donuts were amazing and worth a trip just for them.
In San Fran on vacay. Chose this for dinner our first night in. The tight seating left me a bit closterphobic but the hostess had no issue moving us to a better table. The service was outstanding, the food came out fast and hot and we truly enjoyed our meal. It's a bit noisy and tight but worth it!
Very loud and a limited brunch menu on the weekends. The service was good.
