We have been to Toy Soldier a few times, and have always enjoyed each experience. Franz and Lio always make sure that we have an amazing time there with interesting food and wine selections with a fun ambiance. We have met some great people there too. Cheers!
Nothing good to say about this restaurant. Seeing the restaurant empty at 7pm on a Saturday night should have been a clue.
Menu was enticing, it was what lured us to Toy Soldier. However, the reality of the food was a real letdown. Steak was over cooked and salmon was under cooked. Waiter must’ve been having a bad day, as he had no personality. Seemed like it was a bother to be serving us. Oh well! Our money is their loss! Won’t be heading back there, ever.
Good basic service and food
The jalapeno, asparagus, crab pasta was awesome and I would also highly recommend the lobster "escargot". The staff was very accommodating of our schedule and all request. Felt like we were in a best friends kitchen all food was completely made to order and came out piping hot and fresh.
When we arrived, we were seated in the quiet upstairs dining area. That quickly changed. It appears that a party had been scheduled for the upstairs dining area. Our quiet birthday celebration turned into a boisterous event with our being the odd couple stuck in the middle. The other diners in the room left quickly. If the management knew a party was coming, why did they put other diners in the room?
The food was ok but the portion size and flavor was not worthy of the price. The service was slow - they were more concerned with serving drinks to the insatiable thirst of the party guests.
Our server Kenya was amazing and the food was great, although it was very loud in the resteraunt due to purple at the bar
While the crab pasta dish that I got was good, the bread that they brought to the table was cold as was the butter, so you couldn't spread the butter and the bread was tough and hard to eat. They need to serve hot bread in the basket and offer room-temperature, spreadable butter.
I was dining solo before a show at the Curran and got the mussels to start (whoops—it’s definitely meant for two) and the bass as the entree. Solid food, accommodating and prompt staff, and cheerful vibe all around. Would recommend for a small group gathering.
We were a group of 8. We enjoyed the bar, the vintage feel, and the food was excellent. We agreed that this was the best meal we've had in SF. We'll definitely be back. The only negative was that it is a bit hard to find, but WELL worth the search!
It was quite loud.
The bread tasted like it had been previously frozen or left out to get stale. The bread on my burger was dry and there was too much of it. The parm fries barely had any parm on them.
The cherry in my manhattan was a marachino, not luxardo.
The pear cocktail, that was delicious.
The chocolate mousse - excellent.
Everything on the lunch menu here is tempting. Our party loved the crab sandwiches, and the beef stroganoff was declared to be the best ever tasted.
The service was very friendly; the decor is fantastic. We will definitely return.
Went here for a work lunch and it was *delicious* - the food was outstanding, although the menu was pretty slim. The server was a bit aggressive and talked back to us after we asked "too many questions" which was honestly quite offputting. We had a large party and thus a mandatory tip %, so apparently this means we don't deserve good service. Otherwise, good food and ambiance.
Had a nice dinner with an old friend here from out of town. It's in a delightful spot a little alley with a heated outside patio out front. So there's somewhat of a European vibe, the food was very good and the waiter was attentive and had some good recommendations on wine and what to eat. All in all a very strong performer.
This is a great little Bistro in an alley. The Host was very welcoming. Food was very good. .y client's salmon sandwich looked deelish. Waiter was just okay, although the Busboy was great
Went for lunch. Food was great!
Perhaps the room was too dark for us, but our group liked there overall.
The food is delicious, the service is warm, friendly and knowledgeable, they have a full bar and great wines, there's just so much to like. Looking forward to many more enjoyable meals at Toy Soldier!
My only regret is that I waited too long to try it. Great service, amazing food, cool spot. Highly recommend.
Tasty food. Fast lunch and easy to settle in. The service was efficient, but a little blunt. Like slamming the bill on the table. No bedside manner there! Anyway, I have been a couple of times to Toy Soldier and find the food delicious. Meatball appetizer is great.
Little too much bread on the sandwich. Little hurried on the service. Pretty good also otherwise.
We had a party of 20 and I was able to make a reservation easily. They checked to confirm the reservation and also called a couple of days later to see how everything was. The food, wine, and drinks were great and very reasonably priced. We were seated in a great, private area upstairs. It was the perfect place for our event. The server did a great job handling our group and was nice enough to take photos etc. Definitely a spot I recommend and would return to.
Great service and food, cocktails were perfect too. Will be back next time we are in the city
Great selection of different foods. Lobster escargot were delicious!!!
Friendly service. Food came out piping hot and nicely plated. Drink service was a little slow but still acceptable. My first visit. Will go back.
I love this place to meet up with my girlfriends and have a nice intimate dinner. It’s also nice for a date night (try and get a table up stairs) !!
You can check my more detailed review on TripAdvisor. That said, we would definitely return to this hidden find on Belden Place in SF. We actually heard positive comments on this place on both Open Table and Zagat. Apparently, it's relatively new. It's located on this walk street (small, narrow). It's one of a number of side-by-side small restaurants on this street. Think Maiden Lane on a more budget level.
The food was quite tasty and well prepared. We had the grilled salmon, braised short ribs as entrees. We highly recommend them. Toy Soldier's website describe themselves as "american comfort" and we think it fits the description perfectly.
If you are lucky, on certain days and dates they offer any bottle of wine for half off when you order one entree. If you order two entrees, you get two half off bottles. This was really a great feature for us. With or without the half off sale, we would still return and highly recommend it to others.
Interestingly, we made our reservatoins on Open Table website for 4:30 PM. When we arrived, the staff initially told us they weren't open until 5:30 PM? When we mentioned that we made it through Open Table, the reply was to the effect "oh...they were supposed to fix that".
Service was the main concern. We were repeatedly asked for our order with very slight intervals, then it took much too long for food to arrive, given the light attendance in the restaurant. Our waiter disappeared and we had to ask several others for help. Food was good, tho'.
Excellent food, nice ambiance, good service. All around great.
Really good food, nice selection on menu, comfortable seating, good service.
Went for a business lunch with a few colleagues - was one of only two tables seated upstairs. Restaurant is in a beautiful old building and the patio out front looked like a fun place to sit. Service was attentive, but I found food pretty mediocre. We shared poke, parmesan fries and meatballs as appetizer. The poke was served in little taco shells with avocado and tasted a little off to me so I didn't finish mine; the meatballs were a little tough, and the fries were fine, but nothing special. I had the fried chicken sandwich, which was only OK - giant roll was too much bread for the amount of filling and coleslaw used too much mayo for my taste. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great and there are too many better options available.
Enjoyed lunch at this fairly new restaurant for a ladies lunch. Shrimp salad was lovely. The crab spaghetti was tasty.
Great decor. Friendly staff. Quick service.
The food at Top Soldier was fantastic! We both had the sea bass with lobster sauce on risotto with prawns. I’m still thinking about that dish two days later. Will definitely go back to try their other dishes.
The only downside was the noise level. Some very loud tables and we had a hard time hearing each other. Might choose to sit upstairs next time.
Given the noise comments, I was concerned, but our booth by the bar was quiet. I had deviled eggs and the soup of the day (pea) with a side salad. Both were yummy. And the service was just right for a business lunch: attentive but not invasive.
Team dinner with about 16 folks. We had the upstairs to ourselves. The menu was great for the varied tastes of the group.
A new, welcome standout on Belden Alley. Toy Soldier has become my go-to business lunch spot in the Financial District for a mid-priced good meal - just the right balance between casual but upscale. Good service, they give you enough time to enjoy the meal but are prompt to clear and bring the check. Fantastic burger, I hear the Fried Chicken sandwich is great
Overpriced for what it is. The food lacked flavor :(
We sat i doors because it was packed outside and very loud
Invited a couple coworkers to try this spot out. Great location downtown, great food and wonderful service. New ownership has made positive changes since the last owner from years ago when I went to this spot. Thank you.
