I would recommend Townhouse to a friend but with a caveat. The location is good. The simple menu is fine. The service was very attentive, although the hostess seemed in a hurry. The only issue: the time of day. This place probably hops at lunch and happy hour. The problem was we were there for dinner. Other than some folks at the bar, at one point we were the only table in this very spacious, high-ceilinged place. Even then the noise from the few other patrons was obvious.
It worked for us because we were a group of five old friends who hadn't seen each other in years, so we were more interested in catching up than the food or the ambiance. But, if you want to get the most out of a quite satisfactory, probably fun place for drinks and a good simple meal (They have a quinoa bowl special each day!) come for lunch or happy hour - not dinner.
Sat outside and our waitress was great. So friendly the food was super tasty and our entire group had a wonderful experience.
Delicious food and excellent service
We lunched here on a Friday at noon, when the place was pleasantly busy with a steady flow of office workers. Our server was prompt and attentive. The drinks menu is very interesting, with fine levels of taste in their cocktails (we had the Cloud gate and the Three-Day Weekend). The tomato soup of the day was fresh and flavorful, chunky with bits of tomato. For our food, we had the carnitas tacos (very nice, lots of pork) and the Jambalaya (without shrimp due to allergy, which was readily handled), which had nicely fresh ingredients. Overall, the food is good and fresh. We will go again.
Best restaurant! Lovely, welcoming, considerate staff. Food was out of this world. Casual and not overpriced. What a find!
Nice venue, good food and service. A bit noisy as acoustics are not great. For me probably better for one on one lunches/dinners than a larger group. Definitely will be back.
Had been there once before & was not that taken with the food. Much better the second time. I had the shrimp tacos. Delish.
How do you make a greek salad taste awful? Dressing was pink, olives didn't even taste like olives. I seriously thought I was going to be ill after eating a quarter of it. Not a good eating experience.
Tom, thank you for leaving this review! We apologize for the experience you had when you dined with us. At Townhouse we hold ourselves to a high standard with the ingredients we use and the food that we serve. We will be sure to pass these comments on to our staff to help avoid things like this happening in the future. We hope to see you again in the future.
It’s was good food came out fast and fresh. The clients enjoyed the shrimp tacos, calamari, hummus plates, and i had the turkey club. I usually hav ether turkey burger but i wanted to try something different and it was just as good.
Nice place overall- a bit loud. The food was fresh and delicious. The mussels were outstanding. I’d go back.
Good business lunch site. I ordered the Greek Salad with Shrimp - it was good, but could have had a little more dressing. Service was good and outdoor seating was great on a nice summer day.
Fine. Not great. Difficult to meet allergy accommodations. Nothing special.
Good place, good location, good food, that gets crowded quickly.
Great spot in the loop with a lot to offer. Friendly service and the prices are what you’d expect in this area. Definitely will be coming back!
Great place, great food & service, just very loud and tough to have a business conversation
Great place to visit and enjoy lunch. Townhouse has a variety of dishes to choose from along with a tasty cocktail menu. Thank you Townhouse for the enjoyable experience.
Nice place the food was good along with great service I would go back
Would benefit from noise absorption upgrade.
The service was a little slow when I went on my lunch hour. Overall, a nice venue for lunch with several food options. I tend to frequent this location at least once a month with a friend.
Good for lunch during working hours, but too loud to have a conversation easily.
Good food, nice quantity. A little loud in the inside, but not terrible.
The food was tasty and pricing ok.
Outside seating. Needed one more server!
My salad was truly straight out of a bag.
We are very sorry that you did not enjoy your experience. We can assure you that we only use fresh produce in our salads. We do hope you will join us again soon.
The food was great and the ambiance was awesome as were able to sit outside yet are waitress seem bothered and failed to inform
Us that each substitution would come with a charge!
Service was excellent! But the food...tried the urban greek salad with chicken. The chicken was extremely dry and the salad lacked flavor. Tab for 2 with tip (no cocktails, apps or desserts) was $55.
Really atypical experience. A lot of people must have called in sick or something. Lunch took 1.5+ hours. Water/ice tea was never refilled, food was not even lukewarm when it came. My server was running non-stop, but no one was ever around. This on a day when I really had to get going.
Bill, thank you for taking the time to provide us with your recent experience at our establishment. We sincerely apologize that your visit was not as you were expecting. Our staff works hard to ensure that all guests have a wonderful experience, but it seems that we missed our mark during your visit. Please know that we will be sharing this information with our Staff and Management team in hopes that this does not happen again. We hope to have the chance at impressing you in the future.
Very average food. Drinks were just not made by someone who knew enough or cared enough to make a good cocktail. Very very loud.
Pre wedding weekend family dinner. Food was excellent.
Too loud for a business conversation.
My salmon was the best - the coconut curry really worked with the bok choy. Nick, our server, was lovely too and the cocktail names are hilarious like "Whatchu Talkin' Bout Willis.
Service is bare minimum and robotic, which falls short when there's a huge delay in the kitchen. We had to ask for bread...which then came as toast & butter, maybe made from day-old bread? My salmon add-on was not worth a dollar let alone $8. But still no apologies, no freebies or heck, just some old fashioned friendliness to ease the experience. Management needs work!
Very well presented. Staff is friendly and the food is delicious. Very little noise and the crowd appears educated. Will be returning to try different dishes.
We had chicken noodle soup as an appetizer. It was very good but had lots of shells in it. I had the crab cake blt and it was very tasty. He had the jambalaya and finished it but wasn’t as good as expected.
We ordered mussels that had a sauce that tasted like barbecue sauce. We sent them back and our server handled the issue very well. For entrees my friend ordered the Cuban and I the scallops. The Cuban was very light on meat and extremely salty with not even a hint of mustard. The scallop dish was very good, but it only had 3 scallops which seemed too small a portion for the $27 price. It was more like an appetizer.
The restaurant itself is attractive, open and airy, unfortunately the air frequently had a gas/fumes smell that ran through it. I'm not sure where it was coming from. Perhaps poor venting from the open kitchen, but it was rather unpleasant when it caught your nose. Especially while trying to eat.
Our server was the only truly 100% positive part of the dining experience.
Amy, thank you for this response! We are sorry that your dining experience was not satisfactory. We strive to give our guests the best dining experience possible and it seems we missed the mark regarding the food. We are glad to hear that your service was exceptional and we do hope that you will give us another shot in the future.
1st time I had been to the Townhouse Chicago. The food was EXCELLENT. My friend and I ordered the grilled salmon and crab cake sandwiches. Then we shared. Can't tell you which one was better, they were both great.
My only criticism would be they need some sound deadening materials. It became extremely loud as the restaurant filled up for lunch. I would expect some noise, but it was hard to hear a conversation. Then again, we so busy enjoying our meals that we weren't talking!
Will be back!
Conveniently located to the Chicago lyric opera house. Great service and reasonably price.
We loved Townhouse. The inside is super noisy, so eating outdoors was perfect. Brisket flatbread was fabulous. So was the salmon sandwich. It had a beet spread I the bottom and was topped with greens and an aioli (I think). Very different and delicious. Happy hour $6 glasses of wine made it a perfect pre-Lyric dinner.
Wonderful food and atmosphere!
My husband placed our food order and let our server know that we were on a schedule to leave for the theater in about an hour. During that time, we got our drinks and an appetizer, but our food had not arrived. So, 65 minutes later, we were forced to leave before we ever received our meal. It was very disappointing. - and I was very hungry throughout our theater show, because I had not eaten any of the appetizer - I was holding off until my entree. - Again, very disappointing.
Thank you for sharing this feedback with us! We are terribly sorry that your dining experience was not enjoyable. We strive to make every customer experience a great one and it seems that we dropped the ball here. We do hope you will come back so we can show you what we are really like.
