We went for Sunday brunch at noon. It was not busy about 1/3 full in the dining room. The service was lacking in, well, service. The coffee took a long time to come and subsequently refilled. Hailed the person who had served us the coffee to ask to place a drink order and she said 'i'm not your waiter' and did not bother to get waiter. I did not order the drink. The food arrived with no jam for the english muffin. Had to ask for it, whereas usually these things are brought out along with the food. I thought it was a bit declasse for this type of restaurant for the raspberry jam to be brought out in a little plastic condiment cup, clearly it had been scooped out of a larger jar. They should have the individual little jars or a better presentation if they are scooping out of a larger jar. The best part of brunch were the breakfast potatoes, crispy, creamy, simply outstanding and plenty of them. Need to polish up the service.
Service was bit slow and spotty despite room being pretty empty. Wine list was depleted. They were out of nearly everything and we had to settle for whatever they had available. However all of our food orders were prepared very well. I'll probably be back to give them another shot, but based on this experience I am not rushing back anytime soon.
AWFUL EXPERIENCE!! Poor service, my boyfriend's plate arrived 15min than mine and we asked the waiter and she was like the other will be here shortly, (I guess we don't understand the same for shortly)...
Don't waste your time and money in go to this restaurant, you have too many better options around.
It's a shame that this place looks so nice, but doesn't have very good food. We ordered lamb and swordfish. The lamb was OK - not worth the price tag - and the swordfish was thin sliced and way overcooked. I would recommend staying at the front bar and not ordering food.
We had reservations on a Sunday night at 6pm. After dinner we were attending my anual holiday party. We was seated at our table and the server immediately came over and welcomed us.
He then said to us that there was no bartender and there was only beer and wine. Myself and my husband all fell over. You are in the city of Boston and there is no bartender. It was no fault of the server but THIS MAKES ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE.
I am out to dinner and I want a martini not beer or wine. We had to leave and go to dinner somewhere else. We told the server we were leaving and he said he hopes we can find a place . ( we went to Abe and Louie’s and it was AMAZING- no reservation the place was packed and we were sitted right away because we go there often) when we left the girl that seated us didn’t even say a word. This was a bad experience and we often go here for drinks / dinner and we won’t come back .
How a restaurant like yours has no bartender is completely ridiculous
I haven't been to Towne in awhile. We have gone there for dinner a few times upstairs and it was very good and had a nice time. This past Sunday we were there for Brunch downstairs in the back dining room with my niece and her boyfriend. It was a very nice experience: good food, service, atmosphere. It wasn't very expensive but we didn't have any drinks. We would go back. When it's warmer out in the summer they have outside seating and a band playing during brunch. We have listened from the public seating in the open area in front of the Tesla showroom. We definitely want to go back this summer for brunch and probably won't wait until then.
Experience was generally good but we would have preferred to know when booking that we would be in the bar, not the main restaurant which had a large corporate event. Bar area is chilly on a cold night (which ours was) because when diners open both doors to the restaurant, the wind sweeps in. Even the hostess was wearing a coat. Bar is noisy, but she did turn down the music so we could chat at our table.
We have visited Towne Stove and Spirits twice now because of it's convenience to the Pru and other activities nearby. Both times the hostess has been unfriendly, more of a rushed IHOP feel on a not so busy night, as well as the server was completely awkward and indifferent. He even took my appetizer plate while I was still eating. The food was bland at best. I ordered Lobster fra Diavlo which I have not had before. It was $32 and had barely any lobster meat in it. The entire visit was very disappointing. I will definitely not be rushing back anytime soon.
The food was fantastic but our waitress was very unattractive and left us alone for long periods of time even though we had been finishing our drinks. They were out of the first two wine selections I want wanted but explained they were running thin because they were renovating and offered me a better bottle for that price which was the right thing to do.
When I made reservations, I noted my allergies, yet that wasn't addressed whatsoever. So, I said something to the Server and went over my allergies in detail. I asked him about three entrees that I was considering - he came back after speaking with the kitchen and told me the kitchen could make me any of the three and accommodate my allergy. Unfortunately, the dish didn't come as prepared. Of course, I sent it back and requested a Manager. After a lengthy discussion, the kitchen made me up a different side to go with my steak - I was confused on why this wasn't discussed prior. My Hubby was already done with his entrée by the time they fixed it - although the Manager did offer to comp the steak and our drinks, we declined. We had a Gilt City G.C. that we decided to use as we didn't want to come back again.
But, that wasn't everything that was wrong. First, the restaurant was relatively quiet with quite a few servers and assistants on the floor, yet I ordered a red sangria - out came a white wine, not a sangria. Of course, I sent that back and waiting awhile for the correct drink to be made. Also, how does a restaurant run out of Still Bottled Water, yet they didn't have this available (Saturday night). Also, the Server took my drink order, yet never asked my Hubby what he wanted .
Ground Pepper - had to request - wasn't offered when salads were served. The pepper shaker was empty. The server had to get a new one. So, then the Server put pepper on my salad, but again didn't ask my Hubby if he wanted some as well - I had to interject and say something - although our server was new, the service was overall very poor.
When Towne Stove and Spirits first opened and for a few years after, it was a fun place to go. Not anymore - the restaurant is like a ghost town on a Saturday night. My prediction is this restaurant won't be around much longer - way too many problems.
Do yourself a favor and skip Towne Stove and Spirits.
Wow. What a night of mistakes. First the servers delivered our starters to the wrong table. When they corrected It, my half dozen oyster starter came with five not six. When dinner came, my dining partner’s plate was so scalding hot he burned himself. The pain was coupled with the plate completely over cooking the salmon. Why would a plate of salmon ever be that hot? Did they microwave it? The server was made aware of this, apologized and nothing more. My dining partner asked for a different less overcooked salmon on a normal plate. It took about 20 minutes to get the replacement, long after I finished my meal. The sever offered no apology for the food. No apology for my associate’s burned finger. Didn’t even offer to comp the salmon or maybe comp us a dessert. One of the most clueless and ridiculous dining experiences I’ve had in forever. I travel for business all the time and to all who do I highly recommend you go next door to Eataly or Capital Grille on the opposite side. Simply horrendous and frankly embarrassing for a business dinner. Never again!
Went here for my 30th anniversary. Absolutely nothing special for a very expensive place. we left hungry and had to get a piece of pizza. We always have our salad with dressing on the side. They put the dressing on when we asked for it on the side. No bread came with it. Meals were 36-43 dollars. Tasted good but we left hungry. no mention of our special anniversary.
This place must be closing. They sat us downstairs in the dingy lounge because they stop serving in the nicer restaurant upstairs at 830 (845 res on a Sat night in Boston and not busy?) . The place was dark. The martini was bad despite a revision. The food was very good, but the ambiance was terrible. This used to be a happening fun place, but now its dead and sad!
I haven’t been to Towne in years. This was my favorite restaurant in Boston: I loved he atmosphere, the food is great, the service was impeccable and I always had a great time there. This time, I brought friends early on a Sunday because we had plans afterwards. We were the ONLY people in the restaurant. It was odd. The whole experience really missed a bustling atmosphere. Also, the music was weird - kind of soft rock maybe? I don’t know. Seemed like it turned in to an “older” crowd restaurant, which I wouldn’t have expected.
My friend's meal was inedible and had to be sent back. Meat was burnt on the outside and literally raw on the inside
Only 1 other table full in large dining room and we were placed so that I was looking directly into the kitchen. With a reservation we were placed at the worst table in the entire dining room. We ended up at a table that was noisy due to the bar.
The lack of patrons was an indication that others have had a similar experience.
It is worth noting that the inedible entre was graciously switched for another option.
With so many great options I recommend passing on this restaurant.
We we're sat by the window as asked which was great. It was a lovely night and got to see a pink sunset over Boston. We orders the lobster popover which was very yummy with 2 small half tails stuffed inside and honey. Boyfriend had the rack of lambs which were 3 pieces. Nicely charred even I had a couple of bites. I ordered the Long Island duck. It was supposed to be medium but on the rare side which was fine with me. Overall dinner was delish. Price was on the higher end but occasionally it's nice as a treat. Service was excellent.
I won't recommend this restaurant because it fell short on every measure of a good culinary experience. There was only one server for the entire restaurant, there was no bartender, the espresso machine was broken, and the food was greasy and lackluster. The manager did comp us a round of drinks but it wasn't redemption for the overall bad experience. Furthermore, my husband and I didn't feel well about an hour after the meal. Save your $, time, and health by avoiding this venue.
