Tortoise Supper Club Ratings and Reviews
Great spot for special occasion or date night. Steak and meatloaf were good, but not spectacular. Soups were delicious (I had the lobster bisque and friends said the french onion was very good). The service was outstanding, and live jazz was a great addition to the ambiance.
Dined here for my husband's birthday dinner while visiting Chicago. The atmosphere was great, good bar, generous pours. We were seated promptly at our reservation time, which was appreciated. Lots of choices on the menu. We ordered oysters and steak tartar for starters, very good. My husband had the special (Saturday night) prime rib, he highly recommended it! I had the Brookshire Pork Chop with smoked cheese grits, & grilled asparagus which was also very good.
We finished up by ordering his birthday dessert, Key Lime pie. ;-)
The waitstaff was attentive, the food delicious, the restaurant packed with patrons. Glad we found this gem in the River,North area. Will definitely recommend AND return again.
What a hidden gem this place is! You can't imagine from its facade how richly appointed it is inside. Explore all the rooms as you make your way to your table or the bar. Go when the live jazz is on and don't worry about holding a conversation at your table. Every dish is skillfully prepared, using the finest ingredients inventively. Whether it's just you two or a group, you'll enjoy every moment--and savor it later.
We had an unbelievably fabulous experience here last night. Everything was perfect from the moment we walked in the door for our 8:30pm reservation. My husband ordered the Whiskey Sour and I had the Blood Orange Harpoon both drinks were classic but original at the same time. Our server Luke was fantastic. He even made great recommendations of what to do while we were in the city. Dinner came and my husband had the Pork Chop. It was expertly cooked and the smoked cheddar grits were delicious. I ordered the Chicken and the cilantro chili sauce was killer. For dessert we had the Peanut Butter Pie. It was decadent and rich but not overpowering. We are in town for only a few days but we are definitely headed back there before we leave!
Was disappointed in the wait time for server to come to get drink order - also at where we were seated. Very large party at bar for holiday gathering which was extremely noisy for 1st half hour until they sat down. Both client and I had requested left overs to go, when I got home they did not put everything in the to go box - really poor service.
The lobster bisque was sensational and the highlight for most of our group. Entrees were mostly very good except for my wife's salmon, which was raw in several spots. We would have sent it back had we not become invisible to our server once our meals were delivered. Desserts were excellent but not enough to bring us back. Beautiful place that was nicely decorated for the holidays. Our waiter showed no emotion or personality all evening.
This restaurant is a gem. I found them by accident and had never heard of them. i would highly recommend for business dinners or a party occasion. The team at the restaurant is excellent, very attentive and friendly. The food was served hot and the team was proactive about making sure drinks were filled. 5+ Stars!
Celebrating a special occasion with my wife became a really special treat with our dining experience. It's a beautiful restaurant reminiscent of the heydey of supper clubs. Behind the beauty is an experienced team of restaurant professionals who know how to provide a superior dining experience. The steaks were the best I can recall having in a very long time as were the accompaniments. Our server Chad, was attentive and made sure our needs were met. You could have a conversation without shouting and the meal was properly paced unlike many restaurants who seem to want to quickly feed and get out. I will definitely be returning to the Tortoise Supper Club when I return to Chicago. It's a lovely restaurant and it's obvious the owners and staff take great pride in serving their patrons. Thank you Tortoise Supper Club for a superb dining experience.
Our late afternoon Thanksgiving buffet at Tortoise Club exceeded expectations, from the quality materials to the excellent drinks to the great service including coat check and valet. Seafood station was awesome. The prime rib was out of this world. All bases were well covered!
Spent Thanksgiving at Tortoise Club and had a wonderful time. We needed to change our reservation time at the last minute and they graciously accommodated us with a smile. The atmosphere was perfect for a holiday. Drinks were great and the food was actually terrific. We have eaten at several of the holiday buffets in the city, including the Langham, the Drake and the Signature Room, and Tortoise Club tops them all. Every dish stood on its own and all were terrific. Highly recommend.
We had a party of 11 for Thanksgiving - our family tradition is meeting in the city for a high-end meal! We did the Signature Room at John Hancock last year and the Tortoise Supper Club just wasn't as good, especially for a big group, or on a busy day and here is why: it was hurried, harried and much, much too crowded. We arrived ten minutes before our reservation and had to stand around for 20 (side note at John Hancock we were able to grab drinks at the bar ahead of our table being ready). Waiting itself isn't fun but I hate being jostled and sadly, the only place to wait is standing stacked on top of each other in a narrow hallway spilling into the restaurant as over-stuffed guests try to exit, wait staff huff passed and the proprietor of the place himself bumped and jostled me several times without so much as an "excuse me" and the hostesses acted put-out by the entire ordeal. Our table was way too close to other tables (fair disclosure, I am 120 pounds, this isn't a ME issue) and while our waiter was an absolute hero other staff seemed more annoyed with the presence of a large party, or gasp, a FAMILY, on Thanksgiving. NOW - I will say the food was terrific (I ate lots of fresh vegetables and delicious seafood plus two slices of some incredible pumpkin pie) and the place looks snappy (the Tortoises are cute and the old-Chicago feel is fun) but I expect a certain level of respectful treatment at a high-end restaurant and that was missing at this place. Maybe try on a less busy day which they will certainly have if they treat guests this way.
This was our first visit to Tortoise and we loved it! The restaurant was beautiful and the Thanksgiving buffet was incredible. Very impressed by the staff as they all seemed to be very happy about working on a holiday. Made for a festive meal. Sasha was our server and she did a tremendous job of anticipating our needs. Will definitely be back!
What a great place! One of my family members had a birthday and I decided to plan it here. The staff greeted my everyone in my party with kindness and they gave us a great booth to sit in. There was a live 3 piece band playing in the back room that was just loud enough to hear while still being able to clearly hear everyone at the table. My wife is pregnant and they offered a non alcoholic toast for her during the birthday celebration. Our food was phenomenal, we all ordered the 8oz steak filet which came with vegetables. It was just the right amount of food with a side order of mashed potatoes. The Washington Cabernet on the menu was an excellent pairing with the steak.
It’s hard to find a throw back place that gives the same kind of service you would expect back in the 70’s. I would recommend this place to anyone that wants an upscale place with live music and excellent food. Cheers!
We celebrated our anniversary this weekend. The food was excellent and the service was outstanding! In addition, they served a memorable Old Fashion. We enjoyed the atmosphere and appreciated how special they made our evening.
We are looking forward to our next visit. Do not hesitate to eat here if you have the opportunity.
