Like most restaurants in touristy areas of Hawaii, this one has OK-but-not-great food and is generally overpriced. The various margaritas are well-made. An irritant was an additional $2.00 charge if you order your drink straight up and not with ice. Pretty cheesy. The best value might be a cocktail with a couple of appetizers.
This is a great restaurant - great food - great service - great ambiance. We always enjoy our meal at this restaurant. The food is innovative and presented beautifully.
best margs on the island! so good we went back two nights later :)
Tortilla Republic was long a favorite. The Upstairs was a lovely place to dine, quieter than the downstairs, and even the food and drinks seemed better. We used to eat there weekly during our month-long annual stay on Kauai. We were saddened to see the Upstairs is no longer. We ate there this trip and found the food less special than before. Yes, it is still good food, but no longer up to the old standards.
Kealoha was a most awesome server. Her recommendations were spot on and she was always there to see to our needs. Thank you so much for making our experience so enjoyable. We started with the quac with Applewood bacon bits which, along with the homemade chips was very tasty. This starter paired well with our margaritas. My wife had the Skinni made with reposado, lime, orange, and ruby red grapefruit. I had the Purist—reposado paired with Cointreau and organic agave nectar—which was so good I had to order a second. The real treat of the night came in the form of the special my wife and I shared—an ample piece of monchong covered with a bed of jalapeño, onions, and other peppers, with a sweet chili sauce. Our server recommended the jalapeño mashed potatoes with our fish, which was a perfect compliment. A little heat in both the fish and mashed potatoes, but not over the top heat. Too full for dessert, we gladly accepted a coupon for free churros on a return visit. Located in the Kukui’ula Shopping Village near the roundabout in Poipu, we recommend TR highly.
Great food, fun place. Been there many times. Tortilla chips are fabulous.
was disappointed they no longer had the upstairs resturante
Sadly, not the same experience we had here two years ago. Service was good, people were friendly. Food was good but not great. The kids loved it but not the adults. Drinks were good but the restaurant has gone downhill somewhat over the years. We won’t be back anytime soon.
Service was outstanding. Food was served fast and efficient, very delicious. Definitely worth going back again.
Tasty mexican food, great drinks, great happy hour prices, and a nice but casual atmosphere- what more can you ask for? A solid choice.
Fun spot with good food and service.
Fantastic 10 out of 10 would recommend!!
Service was lousy and feel like was ignored. Spent $200 for an hour for 6 people but requests were ignored and items in order left off.
Best Mexican Style food on Kauai. Nothing like a "Perfect Margarita" to complete your evening. Great creamy tomatillo sauce on the Enchilada Suzias or the Seafood version. Great Guacamole! Visit and enjoy, you won't regret it!
Food was once again excellent. Food was slow to the table but got better as the meal progressed. We will definitely come back as this is one of our favorite places to eat on the island.
If you book a reservation make sure it isn’t for a high top. The arrangement of these tables are an afterthought and there is not enough space in between tables. At different points throughout the evening , other patrons and the hostess tripped over the table or chairs while trying to slide in between two of the hightop tables.
The placement of tables might as well be out in the parking lot, since there is no real barrier between the walkway, stairs to the upstairs restaurant, or the menu for the other restaurant.
The atmosphere was terrific. We made a reservation and they took us immediately. The food was mediocre at best. I wanted to like it, but it was extremely bland. I was very disappointed with my Enchiladas Suizas.
We really enjoyed our visit! Katie was outstanding as our server. The drinks were great. I loved the tortilla chips and nachos.
Felt super rushed
The only place for quality Mexican food in Kauai. Great flavors and good service make this a once a week outing for us. Looking forward to next week and another perfect margarita!
Decent mexican food in koloa. A fun atmosphere. Chips and salsa were good, as well as quesadillas. The margaritas are fresh as well. Only real shortcoming was the guacamole. While not bad, it was just bland and lacking salt. Close location to Sheraton as well. Walking diatance about 15 minutes
We really enjoyed Tortilla Republic! It was my birthday and they brought churros as a surprise after the meal which was so sweet. They were attentive and nice about any substitutions and questions. The food and drinks were delicious.
Yum! Tasty variations of Mexican classics. Accommodating to children. Very good.
Our food came out at different times and when It came out it was cold.
Food was tasty.
The two levels have now been consolidated on the lower level only, and apparently so have the menus. The Maui Mule and the House Margarita were both excellent. The Enchilada Suizas and Vegetariano Bowl were both delicious. Open air atmosphere is great if it's not too windy! We will definitely be back before we leave Kaua'i.
Great food, awesome assortment of Margaritas. Always a must stop when we are on the south side of Kauai.
Lots of unflattering reviews out there but I'm here to say that none of them are true. My husband and I dine at TR each year when we are on Kauai. We had a terrific server who never skipped a beat, great pitcher of margaritas, yummy dinner and the most amazing Mexican Chocolate Decadence dessert. Everyone was really friendly, even Bacon!
Market Day complete with live music just outside the restaurant. Such a fun place for people watching! Staff are extremely responsive and friendly. Easy, casual and food is good!
Food is good but it is pricey for what you get. Great guacamole!!!
Waitress was very nice but new and she didn’t tell us that there was a $27 price difference between the advertised margarita pitchers and the speciality pitchers available (for example the Skinny Pitcher we ordered was $65 versus a standard at $38).
The kitchen didn’t get two orders right (no cabbage on one taco order and no cheese on a burrito order), the food was slow in coming out (waitress apologized saying the kitchen was “backed up”. Tacos (this was Taco Tuesday Night
Such a fun place to watch others during market. Especially so when live music is set up right out front. Good food, service and atmosphere. Wish the upstairs restaurant was still there!
Not happy at all with the food or service. The restaurant has changed drastically from
last year when we had eaten there on our last trip to Kauai. My kids were so excited to go back and we all left so disappointed.
After waiting a while for someone to come by our table our waitress walked over and greet us with “I’ll be with you when I can” and then walked off. Super rude! It would be easier to excuse if the place was packed but it wasn’t. Sadly, our food wasn’t good either. We ordered the chicken enchiladas and steak fajitas but both we gross, so we ended up eating our whole basket of chips along with the guacamole we had ordered. When my husband asked for another basket of chips the waitress informed us that we’d be charged for them. I have NEVER eaten at a Mexican restaurant that charged for chips before. That’s so cheap! Of course we passed, paid the bill and went to get ice cream someplace else because no one ate their food and we had left still hungry.
I highly commend the wait staff at the Tortilla Republic. Despite the fact that it was a very busy Saturday night, the staff took care of us and offered thoughtful suggestions on our meals to suit our dietary needs. Try the churros! They are amazing!!
Not that impressed with the food the margaritas or the stray cats. $15.00 for a very average margarits is too much.
Food was pretty good but tortillas tasted like store bought mission tortillas. Definitely didn’t live up to its name.
Terrance, the manager, was very friendly, engaging and attentive with his guests. Really left an impression! Great job!!
It’s in a strip mall
It was great but miss the upstairs as liked the menu for it better! and was more quiet and romantic.
Great food. A bit pricey but we really enjoyed our meals.
