Topo's 403 Ratings and Reviews
Top notch food and atmosphere. We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner at Topos. The drinks were fabulous, the cuisine creative, and the atmosphere very pleasing and relaxing. We loved the location in a historic old home just off the courthouse square. We will definitely be back!
Very disappointing- we have been going to TOPO’s infrequently for a few years. The last two visits have made us decide not to return. Tonight the Lamb Shank was flavorless and the Steak was over cooked, sent the steak back and a few minutes later another “over cooked” steak was served to me. Medium Rare was requested and there was no pink to be found anywhere on the beef steak. The waiter and hostess were pleasant, great table and the desert and coffee was excellent. The bill was over $200 (we did have a bottle of wine) but for that kind of money I expect the food to be prepared correctly as ordered and that it be tasteful. We got neither tonight or the last visit a few months ago. We will be searching for somewhere else to dine in Bloomington.
A bit disappointing this time. We are long time and fairly regular diners at Topo's. The ambiance is very fine, as always. Our server (Britt) was excellent and very pleasant. The food was a disappointment, however. They did not have several dishes we wanted so most of our group of four settled for second choices. The chicken dish was bland and uninteresting, the pasta dish underwhelming, and the appetizer just ok. Prices remain higher than appropriate for Bloomington. We will return and hope for a better experience.
Service was not good. The older lady training our waitstress had no idea what she was doing. Could not properly open a bottle of wine. Our wine glasses were dirty. Portions were small. Not authentic. There was also no music. The bartender did no know anything about the craft beer she was serving. Cocktail took too long for there being very few people in the bar.
Really disappointing experience. I ordered two glasses of wine. The first (house Greek red) was barely drinkable it was so far gone. The second glass (a Cab) was just as bad. The food was unremarkable with one appetizer (Fritto Misto) basically uncooked. The service was uneven throughout the meal. I ended up paying in cash because our waiter disappeared after delivering the check and didn't return to pick it up with my credit card. It is a nice setting and they're new. I'd check other reviews to see if I'm an outlier. Maybe I just caught a bad night.
Ill start off with the good, the building itself inside was beautiful. It was a very cool style, basically a house with high ceilings. All the food except for the village salad was bad. The feta in the salad was delicious and the tomatoes were wet flavorful. The pita and dips were extremely over salted. The spanikopita was very mediocre. The chicken dish with rice that I got as an entree was so bland and I sent it back immediately, but it wasn't still on the bill until we had to ask for it to be taken off. The bartender didn't know what a shirley temple was so he gave me some sort of Coca Cola drink and when I asked for an actual shirley temple he just put grenadine in the old drink then poured it into a different cup. The bar was right in front of my table so I was able to see all of this. Overall it wasn't worth it.
First of all, it is a Greek restaurant without any Greek beer. No bottled beer at all. Two out of the thee appetizers, they were out of. Same situation with entrees.
No real Greek experience, they don't even light the cheese at the the table. If you are eager to celebrate 'OOpah!!', you won't get it here.
The burger was actually bitter. The salmon rare, not opaque. I sent it back but it never showed up again.
The bechamel sauce was runny and broken. Nothing was done with authenticity.
Could be a great experience but sub par all the way around.
We joked that we wanted to ask for salt and pepper for the table, but thought they may be out of that too.
Unfortunately we had a terrible experience . Service was incredibly slow and they were out of the first FOUR entrees we tried to order. The restaurant has a small menu to begin with( though everything sounded delicious) and was not crowded the night we were there so it was beyond frustrating that they were out of so many items. We overheard another table complaining about the same thing( not sure how a restaurant is out of ice cream for dessert???). Won't be going back
Always top shelf service and food. Portions perfect and always a treat for the pallet. If you dont know what to get ask the staff...it is all great so you cannot go wrong. Best hidden gem in bloomington. Thank you Topos for always going above and beyond. Feels like home each time we drop by.
Food was excellent. Service was very friendly and worked hard to make things right, but seeming disorganization in the kitchen led to very long wait times and the staff was clearly inexperienced: finished plates sat in front of us until we pushed them aside and stacked them ourselves and waiters did not seem very familiar with the menu. We were sat in a small central room, which had a constant flow of staff, detracting from the ambiance. I've sat in the back room before and that was much more pleasant.
Topo's 403 was selected for our 45th Anniversary dinner/celebration. The restaurant met our expectations for a quiet evening of celebration. We enjoyed the varied menu options and the quality of the chef's preparations. The price was relatively high for a local restaurant, but not unexpected.
Topo's is one of only a handful of very nice, upscale restaurants in Bloomington. The food is always terrific, inventive, and memorable. On this occasion, the service was friendly but inattentive and somewhat slow. I'm not a snob, but when paying for a nice meal ($250 for four, including drinks, appetizer, entrees, and shared desserts) you generally expect slightly better service. Our water glasses remained empty for long stretches of time, our emptied plates sat untouched at the table for 15 minutes after we finished our meal, and our waitress disappeared from sight for long periods as well. We were outside, which sometimes can be a problem if a server is juggling indoor and outdoor tables. But there were only 6 tables occupied outside and not many more indoors, as far as I could tell.
Again, the food is absolutely amazing from beginning to end. They are friendly, and it's wonderful location in an old house. I was just surprised to not have top notch service.
We dined for my daughters graduation dinner, we went early at 5 to avoid crowds. The restaurant was relatively empty, but they seated us outside in a tent with a heater that was not sufficient for the windy cold day. The restaurant did not notify me that we would be in a tent and not in the actual restaurant. We had a table of 6, 2 people ordered the specials which were filets both ordered medium rare. One came out as ordered the other one came out medium well when it was sent back we were told it would take five minutes for a new one, after 17 minutes I asked them to just cancel the order. During the 17 minutes the waiter did not come back to the table . After the order was canceled no one from the kitchen nor management came to our table. During this entire time the restaurant was still relatively empty . No discounts nor compensation were offered. The five people of the six that ate dinner felt the food was terribly overpriced for the quantity and quality of food.
We had been looking forward to visiting Topos for a long time. We went to celebrate our son finishing his first year at IU. The soup was seasoned unbelievably spicy for a tomato base. They were not totally prepared to answer questions about gluten. (The chef hand-wrote notes on a menu--mainly writing what was "nut-free.") The lamb chops were delicious, but the portion was quite small--our son ended up eating again later. The dining room temperature was cold. Maybe we would try it again for lunch.
Many holiday buffets have only one or two items that are outstanding. On the Easter buffet at Topo's absolutely every item was delicious. And it was nice to have lamb rather than ham! A Greek buffet was a delight. Enough of a good buzz among the patrons that it gave it a holiday atmosphere.
Great cocktails, attentive service and excellent food. I had the Harissa Salmon and it was delicious. The olive oil cake for dessert was also very tasty. Portion sizes were just right, did not leave feeling stuffed, just satisfied and happy!
My daughter & I enjoyed a quiet dinner outdoors. My daughter is a vegetarian and also gluten free. She said the Lentil soup was delicious and hearty, and the beet salad was very good. I had the 403 burger, which was very flavorful and yummy. Our service was excellent during the meal. We are likely to go back again, and have already mentioned it to others.
There is no restaurant in Bloomington with more potential than Topo's 403. The building is beautiful and the menu is interesting. We were quickly seated in a really nice private room with a window. We started with great drinks, and pita with three toppings - all were delicious. We were not that hungry, so we ordered a salad and entree to split. The salad was good. The entree was where things started to go wrong. We ordered a stuffed eggplant which was served lukewarm and was incredibly small - one small slice of eggplant stuffed with barley for $20. We ordered dessert which took 30 minutes to arrive, and as we were leaving, we noticed that the restaurant was not that busy, so I'm not sure why it took so long. The waiter was very nice and the ambiance was beautiful. I hope they continue to improve and that the restaurant experience and menu rises to its potential. I look forward to returning and giving it another try.
If it weren't for the portions being so small I'd give this restaurant 5 stars. Unfortunately, we left the restaurant and walked straight to a food truck to eat another meal. If you're ok spending high prices for small portions it's worth the meal. Sadly, I wouldn't go back.
My husband and I were having dinner at Topo's 403 for a late Valentine's celebration. Our waitress was excellent, helpful and attentive, but not bothersome. The historic home is charming and romantic, but would be excellent for business meetings as well. The food was authentic and fabulous! I've been to Topo's a few times before, but the food was even better on this visit. We were told the menu had been re-done. I can't wait for nice weather when they bring live jazz to their amazing patio! I highly recommend Topo's 403!
Everything was delicious, particularly the octopus appetizer. Service was friendly and attentive. My spouse and I were very comfortable in the cozy, quiet booth in the back of the restaurant. I'm not sure how comfortable or quiet one of the larger dining rooms would be, not having sat in one.
This is my favorite Bloomington restaurant for dinner. I was with a group of ten for a parents weekend and will definitely be back. It is located in a restored historic row house style home and the renovation oozes with charm from the enclosed wrought iron gate to the exposed brick walls, transom doors/windows, hardwood floors and crown moldings. It's very charming. The menu is Greek or Mediterranean style. We ordered the grilled pita appetizer with three dipping sauces it was served warm and fresh from the grill and was delicious. The salmon dish came perfectly prepared with a light sauce and several in our party thought it was exceptional. The stuffed eggplant was also a favorite and beautifully presented. Although the ambience made for a special evening and the food met and exceeded our expectations, the service was slow and a little disorganized. Overall, this was a great evening and I'd highly recommend. Just hope they can work out some of the service issues. Side note.. the bar area was beautiful with a sophisticated and classic look with a modern touch although we did not sit or dine there. Looked like a great place for a date night.
Our experience started out great. We were greeted by a very friendly staff member who immediately helped serve us drinks and discuss the menu. I wish we could have kept him as our waiter. We did not see our waitress for at least 25 minutes. She had zero personality and not extremely apologetic for taking so long to come to our table. We had an appetizer of shrimp and feta it was delicious probably better than my entree. Once my food came it was luke warm at best. When I'm paying $25 for an entree it should be hot. They did reheat it which was nice but ruined the shrimp. Needless to say I don't know if we will return.
The food and ambiance were excellent, and we will go back, without question. It was a very slow night, and quieter for that reason. Seating is in separate rooms, and the other party was in a different room, but were still surprisingly audible - I don't know if it would be noisy with more customers.
The one downside was that the service was surprisingly slow (after waiting at reception for three or four minutes, we had to wander through the restaurant to find someone to seat us, though we were on-time for our reservations, and the waiter was nowhere to be found during our meal), despite not being busy - but the staff were otherwise friendly and professional (if the slowness doesn't negate 'professionalism'). The less-than-present service did not detract significantly from what was otherwise a really nice dinner out.
