Great overall experience! It did not disappoint! I have wanted to go for awhile and was visiting my son who goes to IU. We were able to get same day reservations which was a plus. We both enjoyed the food, ambiance, and friendly staff. We ordered 2 appetizers: shrimp cocktail and the Saganaki cheese. Both were very good. For dinner we had the Grilled Chicken skewers and Salmon. Both were excellent. For dessert we had Baklava and fried donut holes that were both scrumptious. I can’t wait to take my husband back sometime. The only criticism I can comment is that there was a party of 12 at the restaurant at the same time so our meal was quick before they ordered but our dessert took awhile and it ended up being a 2 hour dinner but i didn’t mind because it was quality time with my son.
Disappointed in the amount of food and the overall experience. The server admitted that a large party was being served but even with the massive delay, no special accommodations were made. Servings were so small, that we ordered dessert, which was half frozen. Still hungry after that. Other tables were also complaining. Pours were small with the drinks. Ordered a beer that had so much foam, it settled to 3/4 of a serving. Expensive meal to leave dissatisfied.
Our recent experience at Topo's was awful. We had been there before and had pretty good food and service. We had a reservation for four and were promptly seated, but in the bar, which was crowded and loud. After a long wait, our drink and starter order was taken. At that time, we asked if we could be moved to one of the open four tops we could see in the dining room, but were told no because they were being held for those with reservations! We spoke to the manager and explained the we too had reservations, but were again told no. After being seated for a little over an hour, we received our drinks.
After another 30+ minutes (without the appetizer being served or opportunity to order our main courses) we found the manager and asked for our check. She promptly brought it and made a big show of not charging us for the undelivered appetizer and comping the two soft drinks we had consumed (i.e., requesting "only" $23 for the two mixed drinks we had received in over an hour and a half). As we were leaving, she said she would reverse the $23 charge since we were clearly unhappy, but when we received our credit card bill yesterday it was still there. We weren't surprised.
We walked across the street to Scottie's, where we were promptly served a good meal that almost got us back on our schedule. The server was great and the food and drink was a good value.
(Note that the 1 star rating for food is meaningless, but required to submit the review.)
Wonderful location and ambiance, but food was nothing special and not worth the price. Drinks were great.
We had not been back to Topo's in a while because of some bad past experiences with service and food. Friends wanted to try it and so we agreed to meet them there. This time, they were not out of anything, the food was served hot and on time, and the service was attentive--perhaps because we were the only diners in the restaurant. When we were ready to leave, the hostess and servers had all disappeared, so we went into the coat closet, got our own coats, and left our claim tags on the podium. Some other customers entered as we were leaving and asked us where the hostess was and then showed themselves to the bar when no one appeared.
This is my favorite spot for a date night in Bloomington. The location is in a beautiful old house with a lovely patio for when it’s warmer outside. The food is delicious - especially the spicy hummus and the shrimp dish.
So, my girlfriend and I love Topo’s. We’ve been wanting to go back and finally found the opportunity to go on Valentine’s day, so this meal was highly anticipated by us and we had high expectations. Since our first visit, we have visited many more fancy restaurants and have begun to understand what is considered a good dining experience. First off, the service at Topo’s is phenomenal. I called ahead to ask if I could bring in a bouquet of flowers for my date and they accomodated me without hesitation, even finding me a vase to use as I am a college student who doesn’t necessarily have vases lying around his apartment. Furthermore, they sent me home with a vase, which was an extremely unexpected kindness to me and my date. I couldn’t have higher regards for their service.
HOWEVER, we started by ordering two appetizers. One of which, the waiter came back and told us they didnt have the shrimp for their calamari, but that they could serve it without it. We accepted. Both dishes were still very good. The calamari being the surprising favorite over the octopus (our previous favorite). Then came the entrees. First, my date ordered the lamb, which the waiter had to tell us they were out of that night. He then later came back and told me they were out of the tiger shrimp. Essentially, on Topo’s very restricted menu they ended up being out of more than half their entrees. My salmon (one of the two specials, they were out of the other special) was decent, but not the meal I was looking forward to having that night. My date had the New York Strip, which was very underwhelming, as I also tried it. Dessert was good, but they were out of the carmel it was supposed to be served with, honey was a good substitute. I felt bad for our waiter having to tell us all this, as his service was phenomenal relative to the situation he was put in. One of his tables even stormed out of the restaurant. ON VALENTINE’S DAY THIS SHOULD NOT HAPPEN. The management failed miserably on this night.
Very poor! The worst $100 meal I have ever had. I will not recommended Tool's 403 to anyone. Entrance is not well marked. Food was not seasoned at all. My steak was over cooked and I was left with a butter knife to cut it up with. Our table was in a hallway. To top it off it was Valentines Day... Horrible.
Fabulous Ouzo drink and other drinks. great salad. surprisingly delicious steak. look forward to next visit
Very disapppinted in our first time dining experience at Topo's. We were almost done with our appetizer before our drinks arrived. The time between course was at least 15-20 minutes. I ordered coffee and it came and it cold. All in all, it was disappointing.
First time here...will definitely be back. Wasn't very crowded, therefore very quiet.
Ambience was nice. Service was excellent. Food was very tasty and well-prepared.
Wine list is considerable. Dessert was excellent. Parking convenient. Staff was appreciative and nice.
Wonderful food and excellent wine choices in all price ranges. The staff is always exceptional and just the right amount of friendly. This is a great place for business and romance! Hard to find that combination.
We had a wonderful NYE dinner. It was our first time there, and we will be back!
Great food, great selection, great wine. Love their bread.
My wife, daughter, and I enjoyed a casual dinner here and will probably return for another. The only thing I can think that would improve would be to have a nice bread served with the olive assortment which was at the table when we were seated.
Great place for a delicious dinner and drinks for a special occasion or as a treat. Absolutely wonderful lamb and beet salad. Nice size portions. Upscale place with good service.
We made our reservation through Open Table and noted we were there for a celebration; the restaurant arranged a small, private back room for us. The food was delicious and we really enjoyed having the room to ourselves.
Top notch food and atmosphere. We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner at Topos. The drinks were fabulous, the cuisine creative, and the atmosphere very pleasing and relaxing. We loved the location in a historic old home just off the courthouse square. We will definitely be back!
Good food and top notch service as always. We try something diffrent each time and each meal has been fantastic. We dont visit each week, but we do dine there on a regular basis.
We love Topos' back room for quiet dinners with friends and family.
Very disappointing- we have been going to TOPO’s infrequently for a few years. The last two visits have made us decide not to return. Tonight the Lamb Shank was flavorless and the Steak was over cooked, sent the steak back and a few minutes later another “over cooked” steak was served to me. Medium Rare was requested and there was no pink to be found anywhere on the beef steak. The waiter and hostess were pleasant, great table and the desert and coffee was excellent. The bill was over $200 (we did have a bottle of wine) but for that kind of money I expect the food to be prepared correctly as ordered and that it be tasteful. We got neither tonight or the last visit a few months ago. We will be searching for somewhere else to dine in Bloomington.
A bit disappointing this time. We are long time and fairly regular diners at Topo's. The ambiance is very fine, as always. Our server (Britt) was excellent and very pleasant. The food was a disappointment, however. They did not have several dishes we wanted so most of our group of four settled for second choices. The chicken dish was bland and uninteresting, the pasta dish underwhelming, and the appetizer just ok. Prices remain higher than appropriate for Bloomington. We will return and hope for a better experience.
After the game, great place for dinner with the family!
Service was not good. The older lady training our waitstress had no idea what she was doing. Could not properly open a bottle of wine. Our wine glasses were dirty. Portions were small. Not authentic. There was also no music. The bartender did no know anything about the craft beer she was serving. Cocktail took too long for there being very few people in the bar.
The only disappointment was I made the reservation for outside and when we arrived the owner was having a birthday party for 10 people and we were denied the garden...lots of room out there..I doubt our 8 adults would have been an intertuption..
Really disappointing experience. I ordered two glasses of wine. The first (house Greek red) was barely drinkable it was so far gone. The second glass (a Cab) was just as bad. The food was unremarkable with one appetizer (Fritto Misto) basically uncooked. The service was uneven throughout the meal. I ended up paying in cash because our waiter disappeared after delivering the check and didn't return to pick it up with my credit card. It is a nice setting and they're new. I'd check other reviews to see if I'm an outlier. Maybe I just caught a bad night.
Ill start off with the good, the building itself inside was beautiful. It was a very cool style, basically a house with high ceilings. All the food except for the village salad was bad. The feta in the salad was delicious and the tomatoes were wet flavorful. The pita and dips were extremely over salted. The spanikopita was very mediocre. The chicken dish with rice that I got as an entree was so bland and I sent it back immediately, but it wasn't still on the bill until we had to ask for it to be taken off. The bartender didn't know what a shirley temple was so he gave me some sort of Coca Cola drink and when I asked for an actual shirley temple he just put grenadine in the old drink then poured it into a different cup. The bar was right in front of my table so I was able to see all of this. Overall it wasn't worth it.
First of all, it is a Greek restaurant without any Greek beer. No bottled beer at all. Two out of the thee appetizers, they were out of. Same situation with entrees.
No real Greek experience, they don't even light the cheese at the the table. If you are eager to celebrate 'OOpah!!', you won't get it here.
The burger was actually bitter. The salmon rare, not opaque. I sent it back but it never showed up again.
The bechamel sauce was runny and broken. Nothing was done with authenticity.
Could be a great experience but sub par all the way around.
We joked that we wanted to ask for salt and pepper for the table, but thought they may be out of that too.
Unfortunately we had a terrible experience . Service was incredibly slow and they were out of the first FOUR entrees we tried to order. The restaurant has a small menu to begin with( though everything sounded delicious) and was not crowded the night we were there so it was beyond frustrating that they were out of so many items. We overheard another table complaining about the same thing( not sure how a restaurant is out of ice cream for dessert???). Won't be going back
I enjoyed this well-kept secret of a gem. Celebrated my daughter's birthday. The preparation was pleasing both to the eyes and the palate.
Always top shelf service and food. Portions perfect and always a treat for the pallet. If you dont know what to get ask the staff...it is all great so you cannot go wrong. Best hidden gem in bloomington. Thank you Topos for always going above and beyond. Feels like home each time we drop by.
Food was excellent. Service was very friendly and worked hard to make things right, but seeming disorganization in the kitchen led to very long wait times and the staff was clearly inexperienced: finished plates sat in front of us until we pushed them aside and stacked them ourselves and waiters did not seem very familiar with the menu. We were sat in a small central room, which had a constant flow of staff, detracting from the ambiance. I've sat in the back room before and that was much more pleasant.
Topo's 403 was selected for our 45th Anniversary dinner/celebration. The restaurant met our expectations for a quiet evening of celebration. We enjoyed the varied menu options and the quality of the chef's preparations. The price was relatively high for a local restaurant, but not unexpected.
Visited during a low traffic summer day with it being the second day of their new menu. The service was excellent and they were passionate about their new options. Wish I found this place earlier, as I tried almost every other Bloomington dining experience before getting here.
Topo's is one of only a handful of very nice, upscale restaurants in Bloomington. The food is always terrific, inventive, and memorable. On this occasion, the service was friendly but inattentive and somewhat slow. I'm not a snob, but when paying for a nice meal ($250 for four, including drinks, appetizer, entrees, and shared desserts) you generally expect slightly better service. Our water glasses remained empty for long stretches of time, our emptied plates sat untouched at the table for 15 minutes after we finished our meal, and our waitress disappeared from sight for long periods as well. We were outside, which sometimes can be a problem if a server is juggling indoor and outdoor tables. But there were only 6 tables occupied outside and not many more indoors, as far as I could tell.
Again, the food is absolutely amazing from beginning to end. They are friendly, and it's wonderful location in an old house. I was just surprised to not have top notch service.
Had dinner with colleagues there on Saturday night. The grilled octopus appetizer was good, but the entree (burger) was only okay. I added a side salad. OMG, that salad was way too salty. I couldn't take it at all... overrated restaurant
We dined for my daughters graduation dinner, we went early at 5 to avoid crowds. The restaurant was relatively empty, but they seated us outside in a tent with a heater that was not sufficient for the windy cold day. The restaurant did not notify me that we would be in a tent and not in the actual restaurant. We had a table of 6, 2 people ordered the specials which were filets both ordered medium rare. One came out as ordered the other one came out medium well when it was sent back we were told it would take five minutes for a new one, after 17 minutes I asked them to just cancel the order. During the 17 minutes the waiter did not come back to the table . After the order was canceled no one from the kitchen nor management came to our table. During this entire time the restaurant was still relatively empty . No discounts nor compensation were offered. The five people of the six that ate dinner felt the food was terribly overpriced for the quantity and quality of food.
We had been looking forward to visiting Topos for a long time. We went to celebrate our son finishing his first year at IU. The soup was seasoned unbelievably spicy for a tomato base. They were not totally prepared to answer questions about gluten. (The chef hand-wrote notes on a menu--mainly writing what was "nut-free.") The lamb chops were delicious, but the portion was quite small--our son ended up eating again later. The dining room temperature was cold. Maybe we would try it again for lunch.
Good quality and preparation were both well below expectations
