Top Hatters Kitchen & Bar
The beautifully designed space reflects our exciting and well prepared menu. While the menu and space invokes a high quality dining experience, our friendly, warm service will create an approachable atmosphere that will have guests returning to us as a frequent affair.
Interesting and eclectic menu. Delicious cocktails (I tasted three tho only had one to myself). The server knew the menu well and was enthusiastic about recommending. Overall great experience. Will be back.
Creative and exquisite presentation of bursting flavors in every dish. The cocktails were expertly mixed to arrive at a perfect balance. It was an unexpectedly amazing culinary experience from the first drink to dessert in a serene, yet exciting setting. San Leandro just got its best restaurant! Enjoy!
Already have recommended to friends & plans to return! Absolutely loved it.
Delicious food and drinks! Staff was attentive and friendly. Patio seating was wonderful, they have heatlamps if you get cold. Can’t wait to go back!
Solid but not special.
Super fun neighborhood find for San Leandro /. Unique bar food with upscale presentation.
I absolutely love this place and have been there twice now bringing different people. I really may start to dine there more often. The flavors and attention to detail are outstanding and the service is wonderful
A true gem in San Leandro! Delicious food, original drinks, and beautiful interior.
Great ambiance and wonderful, eclectic and unique dishes. We tried a few things and shared them. It was all very fresh and delicious. We will be back.
I really like this interesting restaurant. The space is intimate if your inside or out on the patio. The food is pleasingly eclectic and well presented. Good bartender too.
Wonderful and original food. Excellent and friendly service. Beautiful location and interior. Only the music needs improving.
this was our first visit to Top Hatters and we love that there is someplace close to us that serves such inventive and delicious food. Our server was amazing and she really made the dinner something special, she was talkative in the right way and you could tell she took pride in what she did - which she should have, she would have been perfect in a michelin starred restaurant!
We had two requests/suggestions for the food and she took it in stride and made it happen for us. First, we asked for one of the desserts to be gluten free (I know, special snowflake and all, but I need it) she said the chef refused changes (and it does say it on the menu) but she got him to work with us and the dessert was delicious. I do understand wanting to not change things and if I'd had a choice, I'd have rather eaten that delicious crumb (my husband got it so it wasn't a total loss) but we deal with it. Secondly, I had the octopus (which I LOVE). The dish was a tad dry but not from overcooking so I asked for a bit of olive oil - well that changed everything - it just needed a little fat. So, please chef - give it a touch of fat and the dish will sing!
Otherwise all was great - my husband loved the savory donuts (a little TOO good he said), I loved the messy sweet potato nests with shrimp.
We will be back!
Saturday night- restaurant not full- confirms I am not alone in my disappointment.
I am hopeful the owners will recognize and change their menu deficit before it is too late. So many are so caught up in their concept that they do not see that it is not brining in the customers to sustain let alone turn a profit.
Menu was a joke. . Pretty with no substance. Poorly developed. We left for another restaurant after our “dinner” as we were so unsatisfied and hungry!
I hope they can get it together and create a sought after menus before it is too late- San Leandro needs good restaurants!
Staff was wonderful and the aesthetic is inviting.
What a gem! We are so thrilled to have a restaurant with such great food and excellent service in San Leandro!
It's a nice addition to the neighborhood but the prices dont match the food. $74 for rice and a few slices of brisket is over the top. It is tasty but can be fatty with overcooked edges. Some is the really delicious items like the octopus with potatoes and olive pistachio pesto are yummy but the artistic serving was too small with 5 tiny bites of octopus and lots of potatoes. The place is lovely from an ambiance perspective but they need some window shades. Blinding sun in our faces had us leaving before dessert last time.
Had a few hiccups with our order but the owners of the restaurant came over personally to our table and apologized for the mixup and comp us two of our dishes and gave us dessert on the house. The food that we did have was delicious and we will definitely try this restaurant again!
Lucked upon this gem while looking for a local restaurant with outdoor seating. We had no expectations walking in, but were immediately taken in with the welcoming combination of bar space, inside seating and outdoor seating. The place is refined, but also respectful of the space it took over. We sat outside and they had plenty of heat lamps. The noise level was perfect for our group, lively, but it was still easy to have a conversation.
The three of us had the chopped clams, pate, garden greens, ricotta doughnuts, and grilled octopus. Each plate was flavorful and unique and left us quite satisfied. For dessert we had the doughnuts and the panna cotta along with the coffee and it was a great ending to a great meal.
We also enjoyed some of the cocktails: Negroni Derby, Newsboy, and Bourbon Beret (my favorite).
Incredible food with inventive menu and recipes. Very friendly staff and inviting ambiance. Menu changes regularly d we can't wait to try again next time. Good value too.
This was my second time at Tophatters. First visit we ate at the bar, and service was excellent, as was the food. The second visit was disappointing - very slow service and while small plates were delicious, the off-menu special was not - whole cod on a bed of rice with some gelatinous sauce tasted as bad as it looked. The noise level made conversation nearly impossible, as there were two very loud people at the bar. My companion spoke with them and asked that they tone it down, and she was thanked by other diners who also found the noise distracting and unpleasant. I think the key to success is to consistently turn out good food and change the menu more often than “seasonally” - having been twice I have sampled most everything on the menu - not likely to return until the next seasonal menu is offered.
Finally a restaurant that one can recommend to foodies! This is a culinary oasis in the middle to San Leandro and Castro Valley's gourmet desert. Everything about this restaurant is first class from the architectural details to decorating to food, service and the owner.
Small plates that we shared. All very tasty but the oxtails not the best-a little dry but nice flavor. Will return with another friend(s) to try other dishes.
The place is a welcome addition to the neighborhood. It's fine dining a la SF; the food is very interesting and combinations are tasty. However main course choices are limited so you might want to check the menu first. Appetizers and small plates are particularly good, with a good cocktail menu and a few nice wine and beer choices. It's small, so reservations are recommended. Style is modern and casual. Service is helpful and attentive. It's pricey for a neighborhood place but worth it for something special.
Delicious food, great service, I bet it would be really nice out on the patio, too. Will definitely go back to try the brisket.
The food is awesome, as is the concept. We had a reservation for 7pm on a Friday night. We were seated at a table right next to the door going out to the patio. We asked to be seated at a different table because it was cold and noisy where we were, but the restaurant was packed. Our server was very warm and welcoming, explains how the food would be served. But then we had to wait a half an hour to get our drinks. The food was slow coming out of the kitchen. They apparently forgot one of the dishes we ordered, so after we finished we had to wait another 15-20 minutes for the final dish to come out.
We will return, because of the food, but will give it some time to get the chaos in order.
2nd time here and was disappointing with the table service. Last time we sat at the bar and they had less people to serve. This place is hopefully still learning and figuring it out. That said, the price point and level of service are not aligned. If you want to charge elevated prices you need to back it up. There’s a mismatch with price and product at the moment.
Very eclectic and intriguing. Limited menu, could expand it a little bit. Great ambiance and aa friendly crowd. Will definitely come back. Welcome to San Leandro.
Nice to see a restaurant like this in San Leandro. Fine dining.
Amazing food and friendly staff, can't wait to return
Top Hatters is a terrific addition to the area and the word is spreading. The food and bar are great and the space has been beautifully redone. They have a very nice patio that will be terrific in summer but it also has heat lamps. The owner is very nice and the kitchen team does a great job.
While the place is attractively curated, and the menu intriguing, the delivery fell short. Our service was terrible. we waited over 1/2 hour for food, and then again 30 minutes for the check before we asked for it. The most attention we recieved was from one of our food runners who took the time to describe the sweet potato nest and how to eat it.
All in all, I found the food to be bland, and the dish I enjoyed most out of 5 was a lentil plate.
I wouldn't return which is a shame given how lauded this arrival is on the San Leandro dining scene.
Great experience - my family can’t wait to go back there again!
Inventive and finely prepared dishes. Warm and inviting vibe. All this, yet casual and fun.
Ms. Vu has, in one step, jumped to the head of the pack in San Leandro -- not that the competition put up much of a fight, as the city has long been where restaurant dining has gone to die. Good for her -- and good for us! She may never get a Michelin star, as nobody folds your napkin when you go the restroom, but who cares? The service is friendly and attentive. The vibe is great. The menu and wine list are exactly what it should be: short, well-thought and solid. Top Hatters Kitchen has an identity. It came into being knowing what it is but is also ... aspirational. If you want a burger or otherwise mediocre dinner, San Leandro has no shortage of choices. If you want an interesting and delicious dinner without leaving town (thank you for that, Ms. Vu), you now have an option: Top Hatters. I'd love to see them offer a short course tasting menu once they have their legs under them. Local foodies, you won't be sorry you went.
Very impressive for a brand new place. We have followed the development of the space with anticipation and Top Hatters did not disappoint! The oxtail and grits blended together deliciously. Loved the unique salads, too. The lemon ricotta donuts...oh my! It is in the high price range...we will be back!
The food was delicious. The service workers were knowledgeable about the food and beverages. The noise level was just at the right level and the owner was very friendly.
The food and drinks were delicious. It has a cool atmosphere but the tables are a little too close together to have a private conversation.
This restaurant is a happy place!! From the super cool blue tile at the bar, to the outdoor area, the vibe is as pleasing to your eye as the food is to your palate! The hand crafted cocktails are amazing, try the Negroni Derby. Start with root chips...you won’t want them to end! We had Hen of the Woods with a soft boiled egg.. super delicious! Yams and cucumbers...double yum! And finished with ricotta donuts and dipping sauce!!! So so good! Locally owned. Great spot! ❤️
Great concept, loved trying the different flavors.
Specialty drinks were delicious- Panama Straw!
Gorgeous environment, love the cocktails, the food is different from anywhere else I've eaten. Love to have something so unique in the 'dro! Definitely recommend trying lots of things - the tissue bread is so yummy, the salads taste fresh-picked and have unique components, lots of different tastes and textures to everything. Remarkable how good it is while still so very new.
