Burma (modern-day Myanmar) is a Southeast Asian country nestled between India and China, rich in diverse cultures and vibrant culinary traditions. Burma Joy celebrates these bold, flavor-packed dishes that beautifully balance savory, tangy, spicy, and fresh.

Founded by Burma-born owners Kalvin and Poe, the journey began in 2019 with Top Burmese, a virtual takeout-only kitchen in Northwest Portland. Built on authentic, made-to-order home-style cooking and genuine Burmese hospitality, it quickly gained a devoted following and introduced many guests to Burmese cuisine for the first time.

Today, Burma Joy continues that mission through a lively, welcoming dining experience featuring traditional and modern Burmese dishes, weekly live music, and warm hospitality. Recognized by The Oregonian (Best New Restaurants), Forbes, Willamette Week’s Top Eats, and EATER Portland.

Lamb served with butter rice (made with ghee) was nicely seasoned and tender. Mango chicken with side of white rice was also very tasty. Samosa appetizers were crispy with a spicy sauce that made our tongues tingle pleasantly. And the amber ale was visually appealing and mellow in the mouth.

I love this place! Unique fresh food. Everything is always so delicious. Lauren always provides excellent service. You cannot go wrong with Top Burma Joy!

It was our first visit to Burma Joy and we loved it. The interior is beautiful and the food matches it. We ordered garlic noodles with tofu, which was excellent, and a chicken curry dish which was also delicious. Drinks and dessert were excellent too. Loved meeting “Ray,” the server robot! Our human server was very helpful and knowledgeable. We will be back!

Delicious food and friendly, efficient service. Trio of appetizers was great, lamb curry was savory and tender, salad was full of bright flavors.

It was really great. My only critique was the use of robot bussers rather than an actual worker to deliver food. Our waitres was amazing though and very attentive!
