Most of our food was delicious. When the beignets arrived for dessert, however, they were raw inside. The restaurant did bring us another order, but those were overdone. Our server was very nice, but they seemed a bit understaffed, as they forgot our tater tots order as our appetizer and didn't bring it until we asked for it and our entrees were served.
Delicious - love the tots. Our server was attentive.
Our waiter was very nice, but clearly over extended serving too many tables as he was hard to catch. Our chili arrived lukewarm and the mac & cheese was cold to the touch. To their credit they comped the Mac but the rest of the meal left something to be desired.
Visiting my son at GWU always includes dinner at Tonic. Great food, great service and the perfect location.
Love this restaurant and their extreme amount of tots!! Went for brunch and it was great! Got the bottomless mimosas and Chloe made sure our glasses never went empty. Got the toffle
Burger and was very very impressed! Will go Back again
This is a great little place to hit up if you are in the GW neighborhood, BUT if you don't care for crowds, go at an off time. Evenings and weekends are tremendously busy, and also quite noisy. Food is always good and they have some flavorful and interesting takes on "usual" foods (ex: their BLT is quite different but quite fine). No parking at all in this neighborhood, but the Foggy bottom metro is only a couple of blocks away.
College town pub. A friend recommended that I dine here while I was visiting the D.C. area. We had the tater tots for an appetizer. It’s was a very large portion as an appetizer. Nothing exceptional about the tots though. My pulled pork sandwich wasn’t bad. Upstairs dining area was very, very loud.
Food wasn't that tasty--soup was luke warm and the Salmon sandwich wasn't good. Waiter wasn't attentive. Wouldn't go back.
We were a party of 3 and all our entrees were really good. I had the oodles of zoodles with salmon and it was excellent!! My husband had the Mac n cheese burger and it was cooked just right and not too much Mac n cheese to make it hard to eat. My son had the cheese pizza and ate every bite. One warning ... if u eat here on a cold day, do not sit next to the windows or outer walls because a major draft comes through. Either ask for an inner booth or wear extra layers!
Great location, very cool setting, bar and seating areas. Service was perfectly fine, food was as expected. We will be back.
Another excellent meal. Our server was incredible and even though they were out of Key Lime Pie, he was able to recommend something that I really enjoyed.
And of course the tots were amazing as usual.
Underwhelming. The whole 'tater tot' craze is a bit much. Kind of pricey for being a college joint. Won't be going back.
Nice staff, great food, good happy hour deals. I love the tots!!
Nice location within the GWU, but ow price value proposition.
I liked this place a lot. Understand, I was there twice in 24 hours. On Friday night I led a party of 10 for dinner and they gave us a big booth upstairs. It was fine. The food was very good, if not gourmet quality. Very tasty. Service was superb from the young man that was assigned to us. The next day I needed a place to sit at a bar and watch sports, and they had just the thing, downstairs. Three TVs so I saw all the games I wanted. Although we sat longer than I like (and longer than acceptable) on arrival, the friendly bar maid more than made that up to us. The cocktails were well tailored and tasty. We ate at the bar and the food was all fine. This will be my go-togin mill and eatery in the GWU area.
The food and service were great. Also, we were seated promptly even though we arrived late, because of traffic (I called the restaurant to let them know we would be late). Traffic and parking can be problematic in that area.
Consistent food, something for everyone, good service. The shroomwich is a great vegetarian option and tasty.
The food was no better than what you can order at a basic chain restaurant. My husband’s medium burger was rare and my salad was missing ingredients. Our waitress had several large parties seated at the same time, after us, and was too busy with them to check in with us. Very disappointing.
Probably inexperienced service. Didn’t think to mention which specials were sold out. Took 4 passes to take our order.
Tonic is definitely a burger bar, and should stick to their strengths. It was very busy and there was only one server for a dozen tables. She did her best, but could not keep up. It took us 20 minutes to get our drinks from the bar, so my old fashioned was watery. It took 40 to get our food, and we only ordered an entree salad, a Mac n' Cheese app and a side salad. The blackened Caesar salad my partner ordered was not great. The salmon was overcooked and the salad barely dressed. The side salad I ordered wasn't the right salad. Overall, it wasn't a great experience.
We come to this place often- great tots and burgers!
TONIC offers a varied food and drink menu, plus an inviting atmosphere. Service at lunch was pleasant and efficient, and I left knowing that I would return. An excellent alternative to chain restaurants and venues right in the downtown area (as opposed to GWU) that are often crowded and noisy. The owners have done a wonderful job with reengineering an historic building as a restaurant location.
I love all the food at Tonics. The server was very attentive and very nice.
Arrived and the hostess forgot to confirm our arrival with Open Table so later I received a message that we were a "no show" for the reservation. Once seated, it took several minutes for a server to pay attention to us. (At least he did arrive with water.) Since it was our first time to Tonic, we asked for his recommendations and ordered the "tots" as he suggested with the dipping sauces. Ordered long-island iced teas for drinks and the seared salmon with spinach and potatoes for dinner. The tots were cold, dry, and overly fried and the dipping sauces had been sitting so long a film developed over the top of them. Taste factor was mediocre at best. The drink was mostly ice - very disappointing considering the $11.00 cost. The salmon was flavorful, but small. The potatoes were cold. The spinach was delicious. Our bill ran $70+ and I was less than impressed with the lack of staff personality/timliness and overall food quality. Good location, but would never return.
The staff was great, friendly. We sat upstairs which was really inviting.
Nice local spot for good pub-style food.
Salmon burgers and Mac & Cheese both great. Quiet spot on 2nd floor was great for conversation. Will return again and again ...
My group of 18,loved Tonic's!
Mr.Brown, the manager, was very accommodating to our group.
Our waitress McKenna,was exceptional!
Food was cooked the way we wanted and drinks were perfect!
Great happy hour drinks. Had a problem with one of our orders, manager corrected it right away. Great service.
Very nice evening. We sat outside on the terrace, the staff were very, very friendly. Our meals were delicious.
Everything was very good!
The place was very busy for happy hour, but our reservation put us in a quiet spot upstairs, which was perfect. Our server was a delight and terrific. Everyone enjoyed their food choices and the “Tater Tots” especially.
We sat outside so it wasn’t too loud. Inside we wouldn’t have been able to have a conversation. Food was pretty ordinary bar food. Waitress was nice but seemed inexperienced. Didn’t know what kind of sparkling water, split up the bill wrong, but tried hard.
I haven't had crab cakes in a long time. I tried the this time around. Best crab cakes ever!
Always great food and service - great place to see GW students and Alum
Back to college
I have been to Tonic a number of times over the past 3 years, since my son is a student at GWU. I recently was there this weekend and was told by the waitress that they adopted a new 1 substitution policy, in which you can only substitute 1 item. I ordered a burger that came with onions and mayo and told the waitress that I didn't want onions or mayo on my burger. She instructed me that my ordered counted as 2 substitutions and that I had to choose between the two. I told her that this policy was ridiculous since it would be easier to withhold these items and I was not substituting items. After arguing with her for a minute, she said she would speak with the chef and returned back and said it wasn't a problem. With so many other choices in DC, I would rather go to a restaurant where I can eat what I want and how I want it prepared as to a restaurant that dictates you must eat it as they like, not as how the customer likes it!!
Great food! Had the burger and it was very tasty. My favorite was the drinks. I had the G&T and it was amazing. The entire experience was outstanding. Food flavor and presentation was great. Service was also very good. Loved the ambience with books on the shelves with a “Bring a book, take a book” concept. Would definitely return!
