Toloache Thompson St. Ratings and Reviews
Had dinner with a friend, all the food and drinks were great. We saw at least 3 birthday parties during our meal, so this place seems like a good spot for larger gatherings. The tables are sort of crammed together upstairs and I was bumped by wait staff at least 5 times (on each side of my chair) so don't go here if you can't handle being close to everyone! They were very busy on a Saturday night and the service was a little spotty (we had our guacamole to eat for awhile before anyone took our meal order, had to ask for our check a few times, etc.). Overall I'd go back, good location and great meal.
Won’t be coming back here. After we paid, our waitress came to our table asking if everything was ok. We said yes. She said “well you’re supposed to tip 18-20%, and since I was given such a horrible tip I want to know if I did something wrong.” That takes some nerve, especially when the tip was 15%. Service wasn’t outstanding, so I found nothing wrong with this. Either way, waitress was extremely rude and I will not be coming back.
We decided to go to Toloache Thompson St after the 82nd street location was booked. I am 8 1/2 months pregnant, and they insisted on seating us upstairs. After trekking up the steep staircase, they wanted to seat us at a table at the very top of the stairs, in the way of the waiters and patrons coming up and down. We refused the table, so they sat us at another table. About 5 minutes after we started eating our appetizers, a manager/host came over and said he needed the table for a large party and we had to move to a different table in the back of the restaurant. We were not given an option about moving, nor were we compensated in any way for the inconvenience. The manager/host did not even say thank you, despite me having to push through a rowdy crowd of people to get to the table. It was so loud my husband and I could not even have a conversation. We will not be visiting this location again -- horrible experience.
The black cod was amazing melt in your mouth. The portions could have been bigger though and I was surprised the tip had been added to the bill and we were only a party of 3. This is a real turnoff for me. I don't remember seeing anything indicating tips being added automatically. Not sure if I'd be back.
Went before show at the Skirball Center. My friend and I each had one order of tacos and then another order of tacos and a quesadilla. Great flavors and a lot of food. Service couldn't have been better. We were there at 5 pm so not noisy. I've been to the Toloache in the theatre district and will definitely go again.
Everything was perfect until the lead host or manager, whoever she was, asked us to leave or go to the bar so that they could turn the table for another reservation. This is terribly tacky and not a way to treat your paying customers. We had a reservation, had drinks, etc., so they definitely got their money’s worth. From the time we sat and left, was under or at 90 minutes. Would never go back to this location.
Good mexican food (for New York) in the heart of Greenwich Village on Thompson Street. They have some unusual items, like grasshopper (as in the insect) tacos. The style is Veracruz - a little more tomato saucy than northern Mexico. They also have a good selection of seafood and vegetarian dishes. I'd go again.
There is a lot of up selling going on here. It's my belief that the food should speak for itself and not require the wait staff to continually try to get you buy more ora more expensive version of what you ordered. I had their 'special' Blanco Oro margarita ($15), tasted like any other margarita, nothing special but the price.
My wife and I have been to this restaurant four times in the last twelve months... we basically visit the restaurant every time we are in New York City. We truly enjoyed our first visit back in 2016, but since then both the service and the food have disappointed us. Our last visit was a poor experience. The waitress basically had no listening ability and the food was the worst of our four visits. Don't get me wrong... the food is fine, simply nowhere near the level it once used to be. Message to the owners: let this be a warning that proper attention is required at your Thompson St restaurant.
My wife and I were very unimpressed with the restaurant. The restaurant offers a vegetarian menu which we liked but there is no distinction made between appetizers and entree items. Our waitress made no effort to tell us the quesadilla and tacos we ordered were appetizers portions. Based on the prices, we assumed they were entrees, but we were sorely disappointed. Also, what Mexican restaurant does not provide complimentary chips and salsa?
We likely won't be going back again.
My companion complained bitterly that the meat in her steak tartare wasn't good.
She also asked to be told if the food was going to be spicy since she doesn't like
spicy food. She was told it was not. She thought the mix for the steak tartare was spicy and the accompaniment to the salmon was too. My feeling is if you don't like a little spicy don't go to a Mexican restaurant! I had the salmon which was perfect, did not find accompanying veg spicy, but could not quite understand why the salmon was on a tortilla. The "flan" was excellent.
I've been to this location twice and both times I had the same great quality of service. The server was very pleasant and made sure to attend to the needs of the group. I took advantage of the Sunday brunch drink special (amazing value!) and the server was mindful of the time and tried to give us a heads up when the time was nearly up. The food is always tasty and the ambience is also a positive. I will definitely be going back soon!
