Toloache Thompson St.
First of all, the hostess could have cared less about us. I had made notes that it was my husbands birthday and that we would like a quiet table upstairs.. she said the upstairs was closed (10 minutes later and before we were even waited on, the hostess started seating people upstairs. She really did not care where she sat us and seemed to have an attitude. There was only 1 waitress working and she didn’t even come to our table for 10 minutes to take a drink order. She was very rushed all the time and rushed us to take our orders. The food was good, the flavors were nice. My calamari was over cooked and rubbery. My husbands black cod was very good he said. If he service wasn’t so lacking we’d probably go back again.
Four friends celebrating two birthdays was our excuse to visit Toloache Thompson St., and everyone was glad we did. The food is definitely a cut above ordinary run-of-the-mill Tex-Mex; the drinks are interesting, delicious, and well-made; the service is friendly and attentive; and the clientele is diverse. There are options for vegetarians and vegans, as well as plenty for omnivores. Toloache is a bit pricier than similar restaurants, but I think it's worth a few extra bucks for the quality and variety of the ingredients.
Toloache on Thompson is by far one of the best meals I've had in Manhattan! The bottomless brunch was a great value and the food was unique and flavorful. I had the Suadero (braised brisket) tacos and the Rojo guacamole. The tacos were infused with a delicious blend of traditional Mexican cuisine spices, and topped with an interesting, yet subtle horseradish crema - every bite was heavenly; the guac was a delightful blend of fresh avocado and just the right amount of chipotle seasoning, not overstated one bit, then paired with a queso fresco that is out of this world! Attentive service, perfect portions, tasty food - I loved this meal and highly recommend it!
I am super picky when it comes to food, but this place was FANTASTIC! We ordered the shrimp quesadillas, plaintains, and the Veracruz paella. Everything was so ridiculously fresh and delicious, not oily, or fattening; as I've experienced with some mexican restaurants. I would go back in a heart beat. The wait staff was so attentive, the venue was really lively and great music was playing. There was a really nice bar you could sit at, if you just wanted drinks. I only had wine, but don't doubt the cocktails would be great. This is definitely in my top 5 favorite NYC mexican restaurants.
Fine for young people. Too crowded and noisy for older clients.
Good for drinks. Food was small portions and decent.
Overall the meal was good - only one vegetarian main entree, but it was pretty good. Drinks were small and expensive. Service was great. Lighting and ambience downstairs was nice, but upstairs lacked the same ambience.
It’s always an amazing time at Toloache (west village). Everything about this place is wonderful. I’ve been here several times and this. I wanted something special for a get together with a very dear and wonderful friend. Needless to say the Ceviches were delicious and beautifully presented. The main course I think is the Tumbada??? Is an amazing Mexican version of Paella is outrageously decadent! The flavors are pure joy with well blended proportions of seafood to compliment the spices and seafood. Not one piece overpowering the other. My friend Janine and I had the same meal and she enjoyed her white sangria. I had the Toloache house drink, very nice and smooth. Finally we had the churros which came with a milk chocolate and dark chocolate dipping sauce. Perfect because I’m a milk chocolate fan and Janine loved the dark chocolate. After hours of catching up on our lives and wonderful food we realized how much time we were there and how comfortable the staff made us feel and not pushing us out. Thank you Toloache for a wonderful evening!!
the BEST waitress... and that sets the tone for the meal. Unusual /unique take on Mexican food.. loved the crickets!!
Our server Itzel was AMAZING. Poli the bar tender is also amazing making the drinks. This is my favorite restaurant, where I like to celebrate all holidays.
Uptown or down, we always enjoy the food at Toloache. Big group this latest visit with a variety of dishes and everyone was happy. Everyone has a different definition of "spicey" and my bar is pretty low. Was told a couple of items were not spicey but found that they were. Not enough spice that I didn't enjoy them but will definitely ask to dial it down next visit! We will definitely be back!
I went for a holiday dinner with my friends. We were seated upstairs. I believe the restaurant was understaffed for a busy holiday week and there was one server for the entire upstairs. Our server was great at dealing with a group of annoying girls who altered their food, but service was slow, not because our serve was bad, but they were just understaffed. Food was delicious.
Enjoyed it! Went for my SOs birthday and we both loved everything about it
Awesome overall. Don’t grow too fast like Rosa M
Thanks for great food and service. The salmon was OUTSTANDING!!!
We love this place, and the one on Thompson is great and very cosy; really great tacos. Staff are lovely too.
Nice ambiance. Food and service were very good. Would definitely return!
Wonderful food and margaritas! Guacamole, lobster tacos and pork tacos are all must haves!
Excellent weekend brunch! Loved coming here with a big group of friends for day drinking.
Good food. This location caters to the NYU campus and happy hour time slots are very loud and crowded but service remains high.
We loved Toloache in Greenwich Village. The food was excellent, and our server Jennifer was very attentive and organized. We sat upstairs by the window. We will definitely be going again.
Took forever to get our food, about 50 minutes. We got drinks and appetizers (guac). We also got tacos (2 small tacos), enchilada (overly sauced -- I know enchiladas are supposed to be drenched in sauce but it was not a good sauce) and a mediocre salmon platter. Would not come here again. Spent $155+ for 3 people with drinks, apps, and entrees, which is normal for NYC but will not come here again not would recommend.
Good atmosphere, good food and would recommend for Mexican. Better than most Mexican and better than the ordinary tex mex variety.
Food and service good, but it was very loud. Good for bdays
Automatically charged a 20% gratuity. The corn on the cob was TERRIBLE! Don’t bother going! Service was choppy and constantly being pushed around as staff went by.
Very tasty food, great margarita selection, service could not have been nicer on all levels.
Went here prior to going to comedy cellar in MacDougal. Had great tacos and margos prior to a show we actually missed. Should t have had that extra tasty margarita. At least it was worth missing the show. LOL
Good cocktails but appetizer and entree portions are very small so perhaps this works better for drinks with appetizers rather than dinner.
I spent a while researching good Mexican spots in the village for my birthday dinner and I regret picking Toloache. The waiters paid very little attention to us and weren’t able to answer questions about menu items. The guacamole and chips were good, but our entrees were very underwhelming. I wouldn’t go out of your way to come here, especially for a special occasion.
The staff was very helpful and welcoming and accommodating to our party. Great service, great food, was very happy to celebrate my birthday here.
Food was delicious, especially the calamari and grasshopper tacos. Service was average. I would recommend to a friend
Delicious upscale authentic culture-comfort food❗️
Delicious meal at Toloache Thompson! I highly recommend the tacos de camarón.
Great food and brunch deal, highly recommend
We were a large party (about 10) so we were seated upstairs - would have preferred the ambiance of the downstairs level. Great food, great option in greenwich village, for slight more 'upscale' mexican food. Highly recommend.
Way too expensive for what you get. And it’s about quality. Just wasn’t there
Different service here as to oppose to the theatre district location.
Our waitress was so sweet and helpful. We had a great time & everything was delicious.
Came for lunch during Restaurant Week. Jennifer was very friendly and attentive. Food was delicious. Our entrees (his chicken and my beef) were very well prepared -- and especially generous! We'll be back with our friends who, like us, look forward to good Mexican food.
