Welcome to Toloache (pronounced toh-lo-AH-tchay), chef-owner Julian Medina’s contemporary Mexican bistro located in the heart of the Theater District. Toloache is named after a flowering plant famed in Mexico for its use in love potions. We hope that when you dine with us you too will fall under the spell of chef Medina’s creative cooking, which incorporates seasonal and natural ingredients and more than a dozen types of chilies. Our festive, two-story space features a guacamole and ceviche bar, a wood-burning oven, and an exceptional tequila list, along with elegant decorative elements imported from Mexico. We looking forward to seeing you soon.

Toloache-Midtown Ratings and Reviews
This place was surprisingly difficult to find. In the rain, the neon lights just blurred together and we walked by it twice. Once there, they gave us a table downstairs which was really crowded and noisy. We got the chicken quesadillas (which were very small for the price) and a chicken dish. The highlight was the cinnamon tart. It was $10 (again, way overpriced) but the ice cream that accompanied the tart was wonderful. I thought it was just "ok" nothing really special.
Toloache is a must every time I'm in New York. They have awesome Guacamole, Taco's, Enchilada's, Margarita's and lot's of other authentic dishes. Reservations are a must for this restaurant because it's packed every time I dine here. Can't say enough to recommend Toloache you'll just have to try it.
I am a vegetarian, but I have come back to Toloache several times for two reasons: the Trio of Guacamoles and the Quesadilla de Huitlacoches. The Trio is still outstanding. It demonstrates how much delicious variety there can be in a simple dish like guacamole. The quesadilla is another matter. It was always a small quesadilla but deliciously worth the price. Now it is miniscule and most of the plate is taken up with arroz and frijoles: not what I want or am willing to pay that much for. Oh, well. It was nice while it lasted.
My husband as I came here after reading good reviews about it; however, we would not recommend it. The seating is very close, assuming that's why the music is so loud-so you can't hear your neighbor's conversation. Our waiter was pushy and borderline rude. You have to pay for chips and salsa. And they don't have traditional Mexican food like fajitas or flour tortillas for that matter. If you're looking for something different, like fried grasshoppers, then this is your place. But if you're looking for traditional Mexican food, not so much.
We went at 5:30 before a show, and the place was packed. They were wonderful about knowing when we needed to get out the door, and I suspect many other tables had the same schedule. Would definitely go again at a normal dinner hour to see if its somehow less busy.
Had a great meal. The service was outstanding. We were seeing a show at 8pm, and had reservations for 6:30.... we were a little worried we would not make the show. I let them know when we checked in we were seeing a show and our waiter was amazing. We were out in plenty of time and did not feel rushed. Can't wait to go back. Try the Miso Black Cod...so good.
Toloache serves up delicious upscale Mexican cuisine. We were in the city for a show on Broadway and wanted something more unique than some of the chain restaurants that surround the theater district. Toloache was the perfect spot for our special night out.
We unexpectedly had what was possibly our best Mexican meal ever! Fresh, authentic and flavorful. We enjoyed traditional guacamole (average chips), carne asado tacos con queso ( UNBELIEVABLY GOOD!), Pollo (chicken) Toloache as well as Camarones(shrimp) Toloache. We wish we could have eaten more- especially from the extensive taco selection (2 per order). The service was attentive and helpful. Our only regret was not opting for desssert. We won't make that mistake next time!
The food was great but the ambiance and service left a bit to be desired. The tables upstairs are packed very close together and there isn't much space for the servers to move around between tables. It took a bit of time to have our drink order placed than it should have and I was disappointed that even though they knew it was my date's birthday they didn't do anything special or recognize it. For the price, I probably won't be back.
When we travel to New York, we try and eat here at least once! It is a favorite. We had the guacamole and chips, the seviche and then shared the paella. The seafood in the paella was really wonderful especially the octopus. We even had the Maiz dessert which was unusual and also wonderful. A really great meal!
We were in NYC for a few days and searched for nice restaurants near times square. This was the place we eventually decided and I'm glad we did. The staff was very helpful and welcoming even though we were a few minutes early and had a 1 1/2 yr old kid that I forgot to mention while making the reservation. The food was also great and we enjoyed our time there
Fabulous, reasonably priced, stellar staff, absolutely delicious food. Alejandra the hostess made us feel right at home. The veggie paella and the garlic shrimp and the cinnamon tart were all spectacular, as was the delicious sangria. A great pre-theater dinner place, as we walked just a few blocks to see the spectacular musical, Come From Away, about Newfoundland and 9.11, from our dinner. A gem. Thanks to the staff.
I love Toloache. It's one of my favorite restaurants to visit when I am in New York. The food os constantly amazing. I always order my favorite dishes such as lobster tacos and Toloache Shrimps. The margaritas are great. Specially el Maestro which has peach juice. The quesadillas are also great. New dessert made of corn. It's super nice to go after the Theatre.
