Service was good. Just had appetizers of 2 tacos each. Ordered chips and salsa was surprised they did not come with the table. Delicious food just pricey.
Great Mexican food. Very authentic . Heavy on the spice.
Very loud. Decor very nice .
Food and service excellent
The food was good but they should off Er a greater variety
The high noise level does
Not enable any level of Discus
. TAbles set up it too clos
E, impolite service
Great food. Very crowded so not that relaxing. Recommended for pre-theater but otherwise very loud and crowded.
We had a very difficult time at Tolache-Midtown. My mother finds walking stairs painful, yet they refused to seat us downstairs, even though tables were available at the time. Their reply to our request was, "You should have put that down when you made the reservation." Well, we had no idea the restaurant had stairs~! The whole attitude is dismissive of the disabled and older people. Once we were seated, the noise level quickly ratched up. We had a very difficult time getting our waiter's attention throughout the meal; if fact, it was difficult getting anybody's attention. The wait staff have perfected the art of not looking at the customers. The food was delicious, but I won't return because of the service and rudeness.
Found this place based on positive reviews, but it was also recommend by our hotel. We got the guacamole, short rib bone marrow tacos, enchiladas and plantains. Everything was amazing especially the tacos!! I wish we had this place in Los Angeles.
The food tasted good enough but the portions were small for the high price. I also immediately got sick with multiple trips to bathroom after my meal so that’s a little worrying. It may have been a fluke but I wouldn’t go back and risk it. The service was very good and attentive. It was a little cramped.
Wonderful atmosphere, great food, and friendly, efficient staff.
We were a small post-matinee party for a birthday dinner, and were happily allowed to be seated before the final guest had arrived. They offered an array of delicious margarita, "mezcalita" and other cocktail options, which were welcome mood uplifters after seeing King Lear with Glenda Jackson, leaving us all a bit emotionally drained. Soon, our delicious drinks were drained as well, and conviviality reigned. I think any aficionados of Mexican cuisine would find themselves very happy here; an appealing blend of the most typical dishes and innovative cuisine using Mexican ingredients. We started with the trio of guacamoles (mild, medium and spicy); all were delicious, and I particularly enjoyed the medium, garnished with fresh pomegranate seeds! We explored the many menu options from exotically filled tacos to salads to my favorite, a dish they called Arroz con crema -- essentially a Mexican risotto topped with exceptionally flavored and prepared seafood. Desserts were also interesting, varied, and delicious. I will definitely dine here again -- and I hope soon! Note: I also most heartily recommend the Mezcalita de Piña; a spicy house specialty, and so delicious that it became many guests' second drink!
It used to be a really nice place to eat, but this time was awful. Slow service, my meal was ( skirt steak ) was tough and raw. Disgusting
Great value for a pre theater meal. Creative menu at a reasonable price
Favourite meal of the trip!! The food was outstanding. We had the 3x ceviche which was the right side of zingy, but the Tacos of Brisket and then Lobster were exceptional.
However what was really impressive was that the waiter when taking our order actually suggested we had ordered enough food when we went to order a main course too! He was absolutely right and it is so rare for a restaurant to do this and stop you over ordering (and either wasting the food or making yourself uncomfortably full.)
It meant we actually had room for a scoop of coconut ice cream afterwards which was also delicious. Would definitely recommend!
Food and service were good but we had a reservation and still waited over 20 minutes to be seated. Nearly missed getting to our show on time as a result. There was a line of people with reservations waiting for tables. They seemed very disorganized. The girls who greeted us at the door were not friendly and acted like all of us waiting for tables were an inconvenience.
The service was very very slow. Pre theatre the place is packed. Wouldn't it make sense to hire an extra waiter and bus boy so I didn't have to get up to flag someone down?? Waited way too long for drinks and food.
Authentic Mexican food!
Love the food and service! One of our favorites for over a decade!
Good for pre/post theatre without the pre/post feel. Solid food and drinks.
We were disappointed with our visit, the tacos were extremely small for the amount that they charged for it. It was also very cramped in the restaurant and very loud. The table had to be moved in order to get to our seat, and you had to almost scream in order to talk to each other.
Food wasn't that good, bland tasting. Overpriced. Carne asada way too rare. Drinks way overpriced. Definitely will not visit again.
Pre-theatre dinner...first time here and thoroughly enjoyed the restaurant. Was there on a Tuesday evening and the place was energetic. Food was VERY tasty and service was great especially for a theatre district eatery. Will be back...
We thoroughly enjoyed our food and drinks: my mojito was excellent; It’s something I’ve ordered in many restaurants. The guacamole was prepared with just the amount of heat we requested. I had the shrimp Toloache, and loved it. My husband had fish tacos- they we very good! Due to the pre-theatre time, the restaurant was jammed and noisy. But they managed to have excellent service anyway!
I chose this restaurant to celebrate Cinco de Mayo while in NYC on vacation. It’s a two-story restaurant with a small bar area. The tables and sitting area are very tight and the noise level very high. The hostess will not seat you until your whole party is at the restaurant. There is very little room to wait for your table as the bar is crowded. We were shown to a table on the second floor once we were altogether. Our server never introduced himself. Pet peeve! The service from him and the runners was very good. Chips and salsa are not complimentary. Huh? In Chicago, that automatically comes out without asking for it...or paying. We started with margaritas and three ceviches...octopus, tuna belly and hamachi. They were outstanding. I ordered the ensalada de langosta, which was a salad of kale, lobster, avocado and quinoa. Very tasty and good-sized portion. The other entrees ordered by the guys I was with were very small portions; although the taste was good. They asked for the menu again to order something else because the size was so small. Example the two tacos in an order are street size and there is nothing else on the plate. No rice, no beans. The desserts were fabulous - I suggest trying one or two. If you want good flavors, don’t mind a loud cramped place, then I’d recommend this restaurant.
Was my son’s 13th birthday AND Cinco de Mayo!! Loved the live Mirriachi band. Had a reservation and got seated right away, great table. Place was busy with a festive atmosphere. Enjoyed by the whole family.
We visited Toloache-Midtown while visiting NYC from out of town. It was Cinco de Mayo, and the restaurant was decorated very well and there was a mariachi band playing. It was very loud, but I assume that had much to do with it being a holiday. The food was wonderful, but quite small for the price.
Superb restaurant! Great combinations of food! Excellent service! Mariachi band to celebrate Cinco de Mayo was perfect!
Booked reservations online shortly after making plans for a long weekend stay in the city and very glad we did! This place was mobbed due to being Cinqo de Mayo - the small lobby was standing room only with people waiting for a table or spot at the bar and they were turning people away in droves. What a great Mexican restaurant in the heart of the theatre district! A mariachi band came in and set up and began playing shortly after we were seated and they were fantastic - what a great touch! The Chef Selection margarita was well worth the extra cost and were a perfect blend of tequila and lime juice and went perfectly with the guacamole we ordered as an appetizer. My wife went with the carnitas con mole and it was out of this world delicious! I had the enchiladas borrachas and hands down they were the best restaurant enchiladas I've ever had. We finished with the churros dessert which consisted of homemade churros with both a Mexican chocolate and a caramel dipping sauce - wonderful! Highly recommend and would definitely return the next time we're in NYC.
great place to have a large group
Wonderful Cinco de Mayo brunch experience. Top notch service with attentive enthusiasm. For a real treat enjoy the Frutus Guacamole!
Food and service was great. Decorated nice for cinco de mayo. Cute place!
Great spot for a group celebration. Lots of energy in the building. Good food. Attentive service.
Too loud and bad service, but excellent food
I remember the food being better in the past. Quality seems to have slipped.
What a find! Thankfully we made reservations and they accommodated us switching it not one but two times. The food was amazing and fast...the restaurant filled up so fast after walking in to a virtually empty restaurant. Delicious tacos- the brisket ones were so good and my friend who got the fish tacos said they were the best she ever had. Loved the salsa and guac as well. Yum, we will definitely be back!
Excellent food and service
Although food was tasty, portions are more like tapas and therefore pricey. My husband ordered an entree that was not any bigger than appetizer
Felt very authentic and food was amazing. Service was quick and friendly.
I return to Toloache regularly as in never disappoints. Great offerings in drinks and food. While almost everything is top shelf, it's hard to understand why the rice and beans of all things, are flat and the rice seems to be instant. Next time, I'm replacing them. Tried the Cafe de Olla for the first time, and was delighted, same for Canela, we departed from out traditional churros which are wonderful.
Surprised how good this place was the place being in a tourist hot spot. Good food and drinks, very loud as its quite a compact restaurant. The only issue we had was the price of the food which was way above average for the area.
The food and service were both fantastic. We loved it!
