About Toloache-Midtown

Welcome to Toloache (pronounced toh-lo-AH-tchay), chef-owner Julian Medina’s contemporary Mexican bistro located in the heart of the Theater District. Toloache is named after a flowering plant famed in Mexico for its use in love potions. We hope that when you dine with us you too will fall under the spell of chef Medina’s creative cooking, which incorporates seasonal and natural ingredients and more than a dozen types of chilies. Our festive, two-story space features a guacamole and ceviche bar, a wood-burning oven, and an exceptional tequila list, along with elegant decorative elements imported from Mexico. We looking forward to seeing you soon.

We had a reservation but were kept waiting at the entrance for just a little too long-with zero recognition from the hostess that they couldn't actually accommodate our reservation at the time. Food was delicious once we sat down, though we had to shout over the noise to have a conversation at lunchtime. Spicy margarita is terrific and if you have two you won't care that you can't hear your companions.

Great food, nice atmosphere. Would have rated the overall experience higher but when the bill came we noticed that we'd been charged $28.00 for two sides of guacamole that came with our free bowl of nacho chips. No mention by the waiter that there was a charge or how much. For a party of four we were also charged an automatic tip of 18%. No mention of that anywhere on the menu. I'm a good tipper, but i found it offensive that i wasn't given the option. As our Uber driver was waiting for us, we didn't challenge either point. It left a bad taste in our mouth.

My daughter and I visited the Toloache Restaurant because it was her birthday and we love Mexican food. From the begining, I let the staff know that I am in the city to see the broadway performance of "Wicked" so they made sure we received our food timely. As far as the foodm it was well seasoned and so tasty. The staff was very pleasant and wanted to make sure that we were happy.

We would definitely come back again!

Perfect spot for a pre-Broadway show dinner! Had the guacamole trio. Best guacamole ever had! Absolutely loved the traditional. Will definitely return!

We loved Toloache! Really good Mexican (Oaxacan?) food. They take traditional dishes such as carnitas or enchiladas and give them a boost - a little different then you would get at other Mexican restaurants. The guacamole is made fresh for each table, and it was some of the best guacamole we've ever eaten. We had several desserts, all good. I would recommend the dulce de leche ice cream. Finally, they have a great margarita menu, with the tropical being especially yummy. Our server was excellent and took very good care of us. We will go back!

The food is overall decent. The guacamole and chips are very good. We had the fish tacos and they were not particularly tasty. In the past, I have had the shrimp tacos which are much tastier. The rice is okay. Desserts and the breakfast menu is particularly good (have had on previous occasions). When they are busy, you need patience for the service. I have been there 3 times and would probably come back for drinks and guac.

Great food, great service! Not your typical Mexican restaurant; Central Mexican cuisine rather than Tex-mex. Great guacamole and tequila dishes.

This is the second time we have had a pre- theater dinner at Toloache-Midtown. The staff does an amazing job of making sure you can relax and still get to your show on time. The food is great, our ceviche, bronzino, and tacos were all fresh and delicious. The restaurant is very convenient to the theaters.

Toloache is one of the premier Mexican restaurants in New York City, where few restaurants excel at Mexican food. Great margaritas and delicious chicken enchiladas make for a memorable evening.

The food was very good. The ambiance was a bit too noisy and we were disappointed with the cocktails we got at the bar. They looked like inventive and interesting drinks but tasted weak, watered down even. They were expensive also.

One of the most horrible restaurants we went to. We asked our heavyset female waitress (mentioned gender and body type to identify who the waitress is) if they had nachos since it was not listen on the menu, she said yes, took our order, but brought us chips and guacamole separately. I asked her that is not what we asked, only after THEN she told us they didn't have nachos. She started treating us in a really ugly and nasty manner. She did not like me and my boyfriend right from the beginning. While I cannot say for certain but she seemed homophobic. She didn't come to our table right from the beginning but after we sent back the wrong order, she completely ignored us even after we flagged her down several times. The most horrible service ever! I'm never going back there again! I still left a more than 20% tip though. The food was mediocre, by the way.

My brother dined here recently and had a decent meal; he did warn me about the noise level and the crowding of tables, but it was nothing like what I experienced. The couple sitting next to us could hear every word we uttered, and we were privy to their annoying conversation. Given the steep prices of the drinks and the food, I'd have thought we'd be made to feel more comfortable. Even the guacamole, which was touted to be exceptional, was mediocre. I will not return there again, and I will make sure I warn others.

Just okay. Still looking for a good NYC area Mexican restaurant with edible queso. This wasn't it. Good was so so. Like most Midtown restaurants, the tables are very close together and the noise level is very high. The location was good. Nothing was bad. Just not a place we will be anxious to return.

Bar staff and manager ("Arrmento") were excellent and very hospitable. ("They kept the tequila flowing!"). Ceviche, quacamole and other appetizers were very good, However prices are high for cocktails. Big tourist crowd.

This was a great central location to get to for our dinner party. The service was great, very attentive and aware of allergies that were put on the initial reservation. If you're not that hungry, the tacos are a great option, there are only two. I had the fish tacos which were delicious!

Toloache proved to be this surprise hit of our Thanksgiving weekend trip to New York. We went to more expensive restaurants while there. But 3 out of 4 of us thought Toloache was the best meal we had in NY. Our waiter handled my wife's need for strictly gluten-free options (she has celiacs) very well.
