About Toloache-Midtown

Welcome to Toloache (pronounced toh-lo-AH-tchay), chef-owner Julian Medina’s contemporary Mexican bistro located in the heart of the Theater District. Toloache is named after a flowering plant famed in Mexico for its use in love potions. We hope that when you dine with us you too will fall under the spell of chef Medina’s creative cooking, which incorporates seasonal and natural ingredients and more than a dozen types of chilies. Our festive, two-story space features a guacamole and ceviche bar, a wood-burning oven, and an exceptional tequila list, along with elegant decorative elements imported from Mexico. We looking forward to seeing you soon.

Great Mexican (but so much more) restaurant - had the black cod and shrimp entrees and chocolate cake - fantastic! Mescaline cocktails are delicious too. Close to theaters so perfect for pre-theater dining.

I love this restaurant and go there often. The food and service are great. The noise level is unbearable, at least at night. My friend and I had to go to an outdoor seating area after dinner to recover and really talk.

Toloache has been around for a while and is a theatre district mainstay for us. Haven't been in a while and the food has really gone downhill. While it was once fine, the food is now one step up from a Taco Bell. A pomegranate short rib enchilada was inedible. The meat tasted off and reheated and was all gristle. Churros were as crunchy as a tortilla and greasy though the coffee wasn't bad. Service was tolerant of us. Overall, would never recommend and will need to find another mainstay pre or post-theatre.

The guacamole was good but nothing special. We weren't impressed with our dinners. They were just ok and for the price it seemed like they should have been much better. I had the shrimp meal and the shrimp were tough and fishy. My husband had the carnitas and there wasn't much flavor to it beside a plain pork flavor. The atmosphere was fine and the waiter was decent but this wasn't the great New York meal we had in mind for our date night.

I took my daughters here for dinner after the theatre and the location is perfect and Toloache-Midtown serves dinner late. Both my daughters had the black cod and it was perfect -- I should have ordered it as my chicken was just ok.

The food and drinks were wonderful, and our waiter a sheer delight. Only problem was the noise level, which made it hard to have conversation with the friends we were with.

The blackened cod was absolutely unforgettable and the skirt steak could not have been more tender or flavorful. I highly recommend this restaurant, but be ready to pay an average of $25 for entrees and $15 for cocktails.

I love Toloache. It is my go-to restaurant for pre-theater dining. The food is always good and the service is stellar. I only wish their margaritas were a little bigger--one is never quite enough!

One of my favorite restaurants in NYC. It's around the corner from my former office and I've been going there since it opened. I visit everytime I'm back NYC. Their traditional lime margarita with upgraded tequila is sublime as is the made to order guacamole. I ordered the lobster tacos and my colleague ordered brisket tacos. We shared them with an order of fried brussels sprouts. It was the perfect amount of food. Our server was very helpful, friendly and attentive. Although the seating is tight on the first floor and it's a bit noisy, I go back for the food and margaritas. Love this place!

❤️ this place .... great food always and fresh However this particular afternoon the machine broke that makes the frozen margaritas... strange for a establishment not to have another one on hand ... did want another drink but changed our minds since we like frozen ☹️

We were very excited to try the insect taco and we did, great experience! We also had other tacos and plates which were fine but my problem with this place is that the food comes in really small portions & is excessively expensive for just normal Mexican food. Savory food but nothing unique that would justify such prices. We took starters and still had to order twice each for the main dish, with a final bill of $90 per person, a bit frustrating for tacos.

As a long time, devoted fan of Coppelia, I was eager to give Toloache 50 a try when posed with the challenge of finding a decent restaurant in this area of Midtown. While I recognized straight off the bat that the prices were meant for unsuspecting tourists, I was still down to shell out a LITTLE extra dough if the flavor and quality was right. Ultimately, the price tag is just not worth the experience. While the chilaquiles I ordered did taste authentic and flavorful, and the skirt steak was cooked nicely at medium rare, I also paid an insane $22 for them. If you break it down to the ingredients required to make Chilaquiles, there is just NO reason for them to cost this much. Maybe if the portion size was just a little bit more generous. The most expensive part of the dish was the 5 slices of skirt steak, so you basically pay $22 for 15 tortilla chips and some skirt steak. Crazy. You can find equally good chilaquiles in New York for half the price - so GO DO THAT. I also ordered a side of sweet plantains, which again, were decently executed, but overall nothing to write home about. I've had better, and the $9 price tag is totally absurd!! Plantains cost next to nothing and are not complicated to prepare. In summary, only go to Toloache if you are, like me, desperately in need of somewhere to go in this part of town and are low on options. Otherwise, save yourself a boat load of cash and go to one of the many other delicious Mexican restaurants in this city.

Had a meal here to celebrate our engagement and let the restaurant know prior to our arrival. We were treated fantastically and given complimentary prosecco to celebrate. The food was beautiful and service was great. We would definitely visit again and would recommend the restaurant to friends. Thank you for making our dinner special.

Had a reservation for 815 - but the place was packed and was not seated til about 830. The service and people working here were great though. The food was not so much though. The guacamole was supposed to be spicy and was mild at best, and the avocados were NOT FRESH. You can taste that taste when they go kinda brown but they still used them. The Queso Fundido was really good, and the mushroom quesadilla was tiny, more like a flatbread, mostly empty and the taste was not good at all - worst item of the night and most expensive too. The brussel sprouts were really good. I might come again, but would not get the quesadilla or the guac here.

Great authentic Mexican meal before the theater, just a couple of blocks from the Longacre. Was quiet when we arrived around 5:45, but was really lively with a long wait within an hour. Make a reservation and enjoy !

Last Weds evening reservation for 4 people at 6 pm.
We were seated upstairs & there were several tables of 2 or 4 people dining already. Within 45 min , large groups were surrounding us .. the noise level became almost deafening. It was so difficult for us to continue any conversation and we finished our meals and left not interested in Any additional drinks or dessert.

We had a great meal, portions were great, the guacamole was super fresh, the service was awesome and I would go back in a minute. Food quality exceeded expectations and, it's right in the theater district. Special Guacamole, 2 full entrees, 2 separate sides and 4 drinks. 112.00. tip not included. For Manhattan that's great.
