About Toloache-Midtown

Welcome to Toloache (pronounced toh-lo-AH-tchay), chef-owner Julian Medina’s contemporary Mexican bistro located in the heart of the Theater District. Toloache is named after a flowering plant famed in Mexico for its use in love potions. We hope that when you dine with us you too will fall under the spell of chef Medina’s creative cooking, which incorporates seasonal and natural ingredients and more than a dozen types of chilies. Our festive, two-story space features a guacamole and ceviche bar, a wood-burning oven, and an exceptional tequila list, along with elegant decorative elements imported from Mexico. We looking forward to seeing you soon.

The place was packed on a sunday evening and therefore it was extremly loud. Really hard to have a conversation. Food was decent but not great. Service was professional and efficient.

Toloache has been much better in the past/ they were very busy but overlooked a lot of details that left us with a subpar experience.

This is a neighborhood gem! Hostesses, servers & manager did a great job handling the pre-theater, Friday night (of a holiday weekend) crowd with professionalism & a smile. We tried several small plates & everything was delicious- including the sangria. They know what they are doing which is why we keep coming back. Bravo!

Too tight a table. No privacy at all. Also so dark—couldn’t read menu without using light on our phones—and we weren’t the only ones. And giant tv cheapened the ambiance. Food was tasty but small portions. Did not like the ceviche at all. Margarita and guacamole were excellent, tho. Service was timely but no personality or interest in creating anything but a mediocre experience. Wouldn’t go back.

Great service- unobtrusive- interesting take on Mexican food- all dishes tasty and beautifully plated. Warm setting, nice decor. Tequila list looked fabulous.

My husband and I had dinner at Toloache before a show on a Friday night. The restaurant is beautiful, the service was perfect, and the food was outstanding. We enjoyed the lively atmosphere, but diners are seated pretty closely, so if you're looking for quiet or privacy this isn't the place. We'll go back to Toloache on future trips to NYC.

Staff is amazing. We come here every time we are in town, which is only once or twice a year, and they always remember us and treat us special. Food is so good. Trio of guacamole is a must, as is the tortilla soup. We were there for restaurant week this time and did the special menu. It did not disappoint. Like all NYC restaurants it is packed tight and noisy, but it is a festive atmosphere and never too overwhelming. Definitely try this place if you like Mexican food.

great place for a pre-theater meal. very loud and cramped quarters. hostess staff was not very welcoming but the wait staff was great. food was excellent and drinks perfect. tacos were only two small ones on a plate for $15 and the guacamole portion was very small for the money. otherwise, a great meal and they got us out quickly.

Loved the hacienda decor and the food was great. We had shrimp tacos that were crisp and flavorful, the bass and skirt steak. Service was great, not at all rushed. We were there for pre theater and during restaurant week--I would absolutely go back. Only issue was it was freezing downstairs. The weather was quite cold out and the door system they have didn't cut it. Ask for upstairs or go in warmer times!

The place is nice and cozy and has a live vibe. Unfortunately it being my first time here our waiter was awful. We were sitting for at least 20 mins before he finally came over. When we asked how is it the table next to us got appetizers and they arrived after us he said "you looked so involved in conversation" - which is odd for a restaurant! Yes, we're engrossed in conversation and waiting to be served. He was very slow and wasn't very pleasant. That in & of itself will make me think twice before I go back or recommend anyone. Service plays a huge part in your restaurant experience!

We have frequented Toloache numerous times pre-theater in the past 1.5 years. It's an absolute standard for my friends and I....margarita loving, guac craving crew. Must haves with every visit the fruit guacomole with warm chips. They could just give me a spoon and leave me for the evening! Fresh made to every order. I like mine without onions and this is a godsend. Margaritas are totally on point and the house version at $13 is fair and actually has adequate amounts of tequila to make it worthwhile. Last visit during theatre week yielded a yummy sea bass (?) three course dinner including their delicious flan and lobster soup. Everything flavorful and served at the proper temperature....I like my hot food hot. (and that's not the service you get at all ny restaurants!) Speaking of temperature....it was FREEZING outside the night of our last visit and inside temp was PERFECT. not to hot...not too cold (a difficult task considering they have two levels of dining open to each other) Add to that Attentive service that was not overbearing or pushing you out the door but mindful of your curtain time. We will continue to patronize this place for some time to come! Makes it hard to try others when you know you'll get what you need/want here. :)

We came for lunch during NYC Restaurant Week. We had the lobster soup, the quesadilla, the rib eye steak, the salmon , and the flan. All were OK in fairly generous portions. The food was a solid B+ but we were hoping for even better. The tastes didn't seem Mexican but rather American or Continental. The service was fine although it took a long time for our entrees to come even though we were the first people in the restaurant.

I was so pleasantly pleased , we went to meet up with friends after seeing a play. The food was not your typical Mexican fare. It was creative and delicious. I did not have one negative criticism. I will say it was a bit pricy but that would not stop me from returning

We recently had dinner at Toloache Midtown and were terribly disappointed in the experience. Portion sizes were incredibly tiny; they pack you in like sardines; and the noise was deafening, making it nearly impossible to hold a conversation. That said, the food was tasty and our water glasses never went unfilled. With all the other choices in the area, we definitely will not return.

Went there on Saturday for a Restaurant Week trial, the staff were nice and friendly, but the dishes were a bit too salty for us. The starter of Tacos de Camaron was very good, but the entree of salmon just OK, not bad but nothing fancy either. We wanted our steak medium-done, but it came well-done. We didn't ask them to redo it, but were somewhat dissappointed. A picture of the entree of chicken and a picture of the interiors were uploaded here.

My mom, sisters and I went here before seeing Wicked yesterday and it was amazing. We were really early but the hostess seated us anyway (1/2 hr before our reservation). They had just opened so we were the first ones in the restaurant. We got the guacamole trio which was so yummy, margaritas were delicious. The waiter even made my sister in law’s margarita non-alcoholic since she’s pregnant. They were so knowledgeable and helpful. Best part it’s right next to the Gershwin theater which was awesome and convenient. Would definitely go back again! I wish we had one in philly!

My daughter and I had lunch here during 2018 Restaurant Week. The food was exceptional. The only down side is we seemed to have a table that was not assigned to any waitstaff After my daughter flagged down a waitress (who actually admitted that mother got be the case), the meal went swimmingly and we left stuffed.

Tried the restaurant week menu-lunch. The food and service were good. The restaurant got packed quickly at lunchtime on a Thursday. I'd recommend make a reservation, and come on the earlier side of lunch to get ahead of the crowd. Overall, a good experience. Nothing noteworthy to mention. I would recommend you try this place once.

This restaurant was recommended by a friend and did not disappoint. The food was amazing....the best Mexican food I have ever had. I started off with a shrimp taco and followed this with a restaurant week special called 'entrana' and finished it off with a tres leches dessert. Everything was superb. There was flavor with every bite. The combination of ingredients used were truly unique. The restaurant was moderately busy due to the lunch hour, and they had more than enough staff on hand to ensure the level of service was maintained. My glass was always full.
