About Toloache-Midtown

Welcome to Toloache (pronounced toh-lo-AH-tchay), chef-owner Julian Medina’s contemporary Mexican bistro located in the heart of the Theater District. Toloache is named after a flowering plant famed in Mexico for its use in love potions. We hope that when you dine with us you too will fall under the spell of chef Medina’s creative cooking, which incorporates seasonal and natural ingredients and more than a dozen types of chilies. Our festive, two-story space features a guacamole and ceviche bar, a wood-burning oven, and an exceptional tequila list, along with elegant decorative elements imported from Mexico. We looking forward to seeing you soon.

Once the person orders food , Tolache should serve chips and guacomole or salsa prior to serving meals. It keeps the appetite open for more .

I would not recommend this restaurant, but clearly many like it. We are not into dining in a "sardine-like" atmosphere. Packed one up against each other. Absolutely no opportunity to have a conversation between the blaring loud music with speakers everywhere and two HUGE TV screens all taking up any "ambience" that might otherwise be there. Really disappointed. We were told it was "gourmet mexican"and w e had steak that had a delicious sauce but was "rubbery" --even at medium rare.. at $30 for each entree. Wish I'd had a taco or something more difficult to mess up. Service was fine even though the place was SRO they did not rush us, but waiters were overwhelmed/ exhausted looking. Hostess sat us down and then immediately came back and took our menus away--completely overwhelmed. We had to waive her down to get them back.
I know there are plenty of people who like this scene--crazy frenetic and impossible to hear anything anyone says but its not to out taste. If the food had been outrageously good I might consider going back, but there are too many other good places in the neighborhood to need to.

My second visit to Toloche' didn't disappoint!
Margaritas are delicious, as well as the chips & Guac.

They may actually have THE BEST FISH TACO I've ever ordered!!

Quarters are tight...have a reservation.

Great food and service, but extremely loud place that made it very difficult to maintain a conversation.

The only reason we dined there is because it’s right next to the Wicked show and we have two little kids. Food is ok. Nothing worthwhile mentioning. Standard Mexican menu. Two things I would mention and hope the owner of this restaurant will make improvements to it: (1) placemats are dirty and disgusting. Don’t use it or wash it. The only place I am willing to eat with dirty placemats is at my own house. (2) fix the broken front door that won’t close. The cold air would just gushing in because the door would not close.

Went here for lunch while we were staying in Midtown, so it was a super convenient location. I had read that there aren't a lot of great restaurants in the Theater District, but this restaurant was referred to me but a friend and I thought the food was delicious! Really great flavors.

The guacamole, jicama salad and plantains were excellent! It was great to find someplace authentic in Times Square area. Minimal vegan options though (but I was happy and full)!

Not your usual Mexican, more like Rick Bayless. Interesting mix of flavors. I found the waiter's descriptions and recommendations to be spot on

Was too cold far away from front door to enjoy as much as we should have...ate lunch with coats on, as did guests around us. Food and service were stellar, though price was a bit high, even for NYC standards, but with brutal cold atmosphere inside, had to eat fast and get outta there. Would've stayed longer and likely not cared about slightly too high of prices...use some of your profit to pay for heat in restaurant!

Had a reservation, however were not seated for approximately 20 minutes after the time, there were clearly tables upstairs that were available. Food was very good, especially the guacamole. Waiter was attentive and orders were correct. Would visit again.

The restaurant clearly overbooked and had a line of people waiting for their reservations that weren’t honored for half hour and the hostesses were completely detached and quite rude with the exception of one that actually realized the urgency of having people wait that long in a pre-theater time period.

Love Tolache! I've eaten at Tolache many times - especially before or after the theatre. Always good food (and drinks). Highly recommend for a fun atmosphere, friendly staff and authentic food.

I wish I had found Toloache-Midtown sooner! I live in Hell’s Kitchen and walk by this place all the time, but for whatever reason never stopped by—assuming it was more for the tourist and theatre crowd. It was, however, a wonderful experience!
The spicy guacamole and chips were very tasty and authentic. They have a wonderful assortment of cocktails and wine, with a a dozen different excellent margaritas that are reasonably priced and incredibly tasty—with good ingredients and not too sweet.
The carnitas was fabulous! I’ve never had better, with tasty vegetables and sweet corn cake. My friend’s shrimp, that was a chef’s specialty, was also very tasty, with a wonderful sauce and spaghetti squash. Everything was fresh and healthy!
I wish I had discovered Toloache-Midtown sooner, and I will definitely be back!!

This was our fourth visit to Toloache. It has become one of our go to spots when visiting NYC. We continue to love the food and great service. The tacos are amazing. Simple but delicious ingredients combined to make the best tacos you've eaten. And I know about tacos - I'm Mexican! The drinks are always good, plus a very nice selection of tequilas and mezcals to try. We will continue to visit this place!
