Welcome to Toloache (pronounced toh-lo-AH-tchay), chef-owner Julian Medina’s contemporary Mexican bistro located in the heart of the Theater District. Toloache is named after a flowering plant famed in Mexico for its use in love potions. We hope that when you dine with us you too will fall under the spell of chef Medina’s creative cooking, which incorporates seasonal and natural ingredients and more than a dozen types of chilies. Our festive, two-story space features a guacamole and ceviche bar, a wood-burning oven, and an exceptional tequila list, along with elegant decorative elements imported from Mexico.     We arrived early and were seated almost immediately, so that was an immediate positive. However, it took approximately 15-20 mins after we ordered our drinks to finally receive them. The mojito was largely underwhelming and tasted more like mint-flavored water with no alcohol. When it came time to order our food, the wait time was much shorter. I was looking forward to having a side of sweet plantains but I was informed they were no longer available. The food was pretty average including the tres leche I had ordered. Overall, it was a pretty average experience. It seemed like one waiter was servicing the whole restaurant which created long wait times. Maybe I’ll revisit another time, but I was largely disappointed.

    Cozy modern Mexican with creative dishes like their famous quesadilla with huitlacoche and truffles. Try their micheladas (with clamato!) too. Great location by the Gershwin.
