I really wanted to love this place, but it just didn’t meet my expectations. The service and staff were excellent..friendly and attentive. My drinks a blueberry margarita, was a bit sweeter than I anticipated, but still good. Chips and salsa (not complimentary) were good. Chips were warm and salsa was more like a sauce than a true salsa. What was disappointing was the paella. Paella should be made to order and cooked in a paella pan. Mine was served on a plate...I have no idea how it was cooked. The seafood, especially the shrimp, was over cooked and tough. The flavor of the rice was okay, but this was NOT paella. It was rice with fish on a plate. For $34, in what is supposed to be an “authentic” Mexican restaurant, I expected better.
Food was fabulous but hostess continued to move table in order to squeeze more people than could fit into an empty table e.g. table sits 4 but squeeze 6. Hostess just moved the table didn't ask first apologized second. If going before a show - go early
Great place but very loud.
Great food; great service-- tables are VERY close together and only one bathroom. But the food was soooooo good I would go back in a second.
Last two times we have come to the city we have visited. Excellent food with a great vibe. Dependent on the type of crowd it can be very loud (especially upstairs) so be ready to talk loud to your table mates. A small price to pay though.
My husband and I were visiting our son and had dinner at Toloache before the theatre! Excellent at usual!
Food was phenomenal and is the reason I will return. Service was ok, but I think the server was under the impression that we wanted our entrees to come out as two different courses, but we ordered everything together so that we could get to the theater on time. So, unfortunately, the items we were looking forward to most, we had to cancel because we did not have enough time to wait. Tables are very small so they do not fit a lot. The tables are also so close together that there is no privacy- we heard every word of our "neighbors" conversations that we wish we did not. If it weren't for the food, I probably wouldn't be interested in going back.
Great avocado appetizer and a very creative stuffed pumpkin offering as well. The cod main course was fabulous.
Great dinner before going to the show Wicked. Convenient. The food was delicious, and service very attentive.
Went here for pre-theater lunch. Arrived early for our reservation but were seated right away. Very convenient to the 50th Street subway stop on Eighth Avenue. The food was good and especially liked the avacado fries.
Great food, friendly & quick service, and the atmosphere is nice too.
Great food and service, the food is very inventive and different from other Mexican eateries
Very small portions but delicious. The noise levels were a bit too high for me, but a great place for a younger crowd who aren’t there to talk a lot.
We went there to celebrate the Mexican Independence day with a couple of friends, there was Mariachi and we had a great time, food and drinks.
I’ve been coming here for years, best Mexican restaurant in NY. Great amazing staff and you can’t find a better cocktail and Mezcal list. Can’t wait to go back, thanks guys!
Everything was excellent. We easily made reservations through Open Table and were seated immediately when we arrived a few minutes early. Drink orders were taken quickly and were fantastic (red sangria, frozen lime margarita and traditional mojito). We split the guacamole trio and each had a different meal: lobster tacos, chicken tacos and the brunch dish, JM huarache. We definitely will be back!
Food was great and the guacamole was outstanding! Great for late night dining after a broadway show.
Sixth time there. Tortillas need improvement. Very crowded. I’ve always liked but this time was underwhelming.
Great staff and superior service are only matched by the magnificent kitchen. This restaurant is so much fun and the food and drinks are fantastic. Whether ceviche or quesadillas which are better than you will ever imagine or the main courses like the cod, you will have the best time for certain. Just go and enjoy yourselves
Toloache-Midtown's location in NYC's Theater District makes it ideal to get a meal before attending one of the many shows in the area. In fact, they will ask if you will be going to an event when seating you--which is a good thing if you want to arrive in a timely manner. We were seated in a second level which overlooks the main floor but doesn't offer much of a scenic view, and the seating for two puts you quite close to other coupled diners. The waitstaff was quick to bring us guacamole and chips along with our water and to take our drink and food order. As more people arrived the noise level began to rise but we were able to converse without raising our voices. Our appetizer was a hamachi ceviche prepared a little differently than I expected (i.e. on the dry side but with a sauce on the side) but still good. We both ordered the lechon (pork) plate with veggies and a corn custard which was really good and tasty. Dessert was crepas de cajeta (layered crepe) and its sauce made it a treat.
I certainly recommend to travel here via walking or public transportation as street parking is near impossible and the lots can be costly. Dress is casual. And note: straws are no longer offered or available!
All in all, a very nice evening at Toloache before the show!
Toloache has been a favorite for years. Creative consistently tasty food. Service and atmosphere never lacking. Lunch or dinner it’s a winner!
We recently had a pre-theater dinner here and were in and out in plenty of time to make our show. The staff is well-prepared to deal with the theater crowd. Our food was tasty and nicely presented. My fish tacos were delicious, as were the grasshopper tacos. We sat on the first floor, which was a bit crowded and noisy, but we enjoyed our dinner and would come again for a pre-theater meal.
We liked this place very much. Somebody from a near by Hotel recomended us this Restaurant. A good choice. Would go again.
We had Great service and were seated quickly. The food was authentic and fantastic
We had lunch/brunch here before a show. We arrived as they were opening and the manager was incredibly attentive. She brought us water and took our drink and appetizer order. Even refilled our water and checked I throughout the meal. Both my husband and I said from the drinks (their skinny La Flaca margarita ) to Their enters it was the best we had all weekend! Mexican done perfectly! I had the short ribs and pork belly taco which were tender, spicy and amazing. The steak and eggs my husband had sweet done perfectly. Go.. go now
Food is amazing and staff takes care of us.
Also the Margarita is really good!
Not worth what you pay
Our second time here, enjoyed it the first and wanted to return. It was as good as before, excellent guacamole for starters and churros for dessert, with various large plates for dinner, all tasty. The cocktails, and Mexican coffees, were awesome. Sitting upstairs is a bit quieter, but downstairs is fun as well. There is always a good vibe here, a fun place to be.
This is a unique, cute place close to theaters. The menu is very unique - the cheese quesadillas were basically and cast iron skillet of melted cheeses with mushrooms with flour tortillas on the side.
I love Toloache. I DO NOT LOVE WHEN WAITERS RUSH ME TO ORDER. Other than that, I always enjoy going for dinner.
Food was amazing! Guacamole was some of the best I’ve had and I’m from California!
We've been looking for great Mexican Food in NY and happened onto Toloache. We had a great meal, great drinks and great service. We will most assuredly be back as soon as we can.
Always a great place for a quick lunch meet up! Lechon tacos are my go-to!! So delicious! And service is super fast!
The food was delicious as always. We told our waiter that we needed to be finished in time to get to the theater. We were graciously accommodated.
Cramped, noisy and as authentically Mexican as a London bus. Cold Brussels sprouts (no kidding!) which I only ordered out of curiosity. 75%of the beers were unavailable. Rest of food was lukewarm, tasteless and hopelessly bland. Carrots too hard to take a fork. Massively overpriced. USD81 including non-optional service charge for 2 main dishes and tap water. No other drinks (I gave up trying to find a beer they had in stock). No other dishes except the aforementioned stone cold ball-bearing sprouts. Absolute pish. Worst and most expensive food by far that we had in 5 days in NYC. Apart from the above, everything else was OK. Toloache? Ball-ache.
Good food and service. In the heart of the theater district so very convenient.
Great food !!
Great food. We had to wait 10 mins despite reservation. Server was in a hurry and could not wait to hear out the order.
Always great food!! Waiter asked about food allergies and was knowledgeable!!
Always a solid choice for upscale Mexican food in the the theater district. We have met some fascinating people- at the next table!
