Frank X. Tolbert’s life-long passion for chili inspired him to write his world-famous book “A Bowl of Red” 50 years ago. He founded the Terlingua Championship Chili Cook-Off in 1967 and joined forces with son Frank 2 in 1976 to open the first Tolbert’s Restaurant in Dallas, with daughter Kathleen helping manage starting in 1977. Kathleen, with her husband Paul Ryan, selected Grapevine’s historic Main Street as the new home of Tolbert’s in 2006. The tradition continues as Tolbert’s Restaurant & Chili Parlor features classic southwestern cuisine with our signature Bowl of Red, using the same recipe developed by Frank X. Tolbert and his son. I was able to make a reservation in a very quick and timely fashion. I was also able to adjust my time that worked best for our group. This was my first time eating at Tolbert’s. Great food!! Great atmosphere and the service was superb yet quick! Thoroughly enjoyed. Highly recommend and will return!!

After visiting, we feel this restaurant might better serve smaller parties. The chili, which most of us had before our main meal was great! But the main course was less than exciting. The dishes were either cold or burnt. It was good food and I'm sure with a small table it would be great, but the kitchen's time management was not on par.

After living in the Grapevine area for a long time, we realized we had never been to Tolberts. We enjoyed the food and we have always enjoyed Downtown/Main Street Grapevine. We will be going back for more.

We had a great date night at Tolbert's. The reason we decided to go to Tolbert's, honestly, is because I began competing in chili cook-off's this year and HAD to have some chili from one of the icons of the chili cook off world. So, yes, we had some chili... but we shared only a cup because we wanted to try other items of the menu since it was our first visit. We ordered beers and the sampler appetizer. Everything on the sampler platter was amazing!! So flavorful, some spicy and some not so much. I don't normally like as spicy as some items were, but they had such great flavor that I couldn't stop eating them. My husband had chicken fried steak with okra and mashed potatoes (he added all the pepper you'll see in the picture) and said it was all great. I had the catfish with grilled asparagus and mac & cheese. I'm always a little leery about asparagus because I like it with a little crunch to it and most places I have tried it don't keep the crunch. My asparagus was perfectly cooked!! The catfish was great, nice crunch on the outside and tender and flaky inside. Kevin, our server, helped us with the beer selection based on what we normally like. He was friendly, attentive and knowledgeable... three musts in my opinion for a server. We will definitely return and, hopefully, with a few friends. OHH, almost forgot!! The music was awesome as well, and not overpowering or intrusive like at some other places. The volume was perfect.

Excellent food, gluten-frer menu, and the service was fantastic. Our server was Kevin. He was knowledgeable about the food, offered suggestions and did not rush us. Also he was knowledgeable in the local area.

First time, tried it from Open Table on business trip, very good overall, and small down town area was a nice setting. Nice menu choices and did try and enjoy their famous Chili

Went there to see VLB perform. The venue is very good for small audiences. The chili was not up to the level I would expect for supposed competition chili.
