When my son comes to visit me from Long Beach CA we always look for an interesting new restaurant to try. We enjoyed an exceptional meal this past Sunday evening accompanied by most attentive service. Portions are generous...go with a big appetite and set aside time to slowly relish every bite. A true gem serving authentic Hungarian cuisine
no greeting by management. server did not know wines or much about foods. very heavy sauces. absent management.
Amazing food and service, intimate setting and wonderful violin music. Owner was very accommodating and friendly, allowing me to taste Hungarian wines. An outstanding experience!
We had rack of lamb, filet, cabbage rolls, fois gras, eveything was delicious. loved the fresh bread and cheese platter before dinner. service was crisp, and we had ine glasses replaced with each xdifferent wine we tried. highly recommend.
Exceptional service, food and value. We will make this a regular stop.
We were a party of 4 and everyone was pleased. Nice wine selection and lovely staff
We've been here multiple times since they opened. The food is always delicious and the service excellent!
Tokaj was not what we were really expecting. While the food was good, it was more continental than Hungarian. Of those I dined with one had grouper on linguini, one a veal chop with potatoes and vegetables and the 3rd duck with rice and vegetables . All were good, but aside from the cabbage with the duck, nothing seemed Hungarian.
A terrific new restaurant in sarasota with fabulous food and a staff that’s as friendly as having dinner with family
Will be there again in one week
Don’t miss eating here. The food was exceptional
Four people eating four different dinners We all loved everything. Plus the portions were very large. Wonderful violin player to set the mood
my dish (roast duck) was superb, not least because of the accompanying red cabbage and potatoes. unfortunately, my wife was not so happy--her pork was not tender, and we ended up sharing my copious portion of duck.
the wines were quite good and reasonably priced. the violinist could have been a nice touch, but his songbook was banal. all that was needed was the traditional Hungarian repertoire, but that was nowhere to be heard.
finally, the much-anticipated esterhazy cake was, alas, not very fresh. there's a good restaurant waiting to emerge here, but it failed to do so last saturday.
A neighbor gem with pleasant atmosphere and good service.
If you are looking for a charming, quaint and intimate restaurant with excellent food and service Tokaj should be on the top of your list. Our meal and service will be remembered for a long time. The pork tenderloin served on truffle toast and topped with foie gras was as tender as any tenderloin I have ever had. The seafood risotto was impressive with its large portion and jumbo scallops and writing this review makes me want to return tomorrow.
It was our first time dining at Tokaj and all of us enjoyed the evening. The food was delicious and the service excellent. Good value.
Best kale salad in Sarasota without question!
One meal very good, one came cold. They quickly replaced cold meal. Nice place, will try again.
A great little find! Lovely little restaurant with great food! Some Hungarian selections but many European/Mediterranean choices. Had the Hungarian pate - it was delicious! Just like we had in Budapest. Friendly staff; enjoyed out evening.
Excellent Hungarian food, very authentic. Service was also excellent. We tried several Hungarian wines and all were great!
Had a fabulous meal...salads were divine. We had the Caesar and the Kale. If you are a vegetarian the Vegetarian Risotto was delicious...tofu was nicely seasoned. My dinner mate had the roasted duck and he raved about it. We had a nice dry Hungarian white wine ...Irsaia Oliver wonderful. The only thing we wouldn't order again was the walnut, Eszterhazy Cake. We just didn't like the taste or texture. No worries, there are several other desserts to try when we return.
I was impressed with the restaurant. The chef has some great offerings. Its hard to find good Fois Gras. Theres is authentic. Their other entries were also very good. We had Mussles, Fantastic, a pork loin, fantastic The veal chop was very tasty and large. Presentation perfect, preparation perfect, Bread good and hot, No complaints.
Going again this next week
Exceptional service and intimate atmosphere complete with a violinist. Cheese plate was amazing served with bread and fruit and candies walnuts. Salads were delicious - arugula for me and spinach for husband (which had THE BEST STRAWBERRIES EVER). We had wine by the glass and though list was limited there are some strong reds. The service is exceptional and we will return—yet we would choose different dinner entrees. Although I had the cabbage rolls which were indeed tasty I would opt for my first choice of salmon! Husband chose the linguine with clams and would not chose again but would like to return for the lamb! Husband could not pass up desert - had the crepes with whipped cream and blueberry- delightful! We are enchanted by this new restaurant in gulf gate and will definitely dine here again!
First visit for us. I think they are pretty new in town. Food was an absolute cut above. Prices are not cheap but you get what you pay for. The chilean sea bass was outstanding and the shrimp was delicious and the lamb chops cannot be beat. Lovely owners. Good reasonably priced wine list. We were there early. The violinist was great. It wasn’t over powering music but lovely background music. We were able to have a great conversation. An overall fun experience. As far as that Gulfgate area goes, I think it’s the nicest place to have a special meal and quality food. Heading back there next week with friends. Enjoy 😊
We just got back from budapest and missing hungarian food. Tokaj is amazing its like a family member cooked our dinner. We had 2 glasses of hungarian wine Had a cheese appetizer each had a salad and we both ordered stuffed cabbage for dinner and had he sampling for dessert Everything was delicious It was a little pricey at $105 So we will have to go on special occaisions
Good food Friendly staff
The rack of lamb is outstanding! Actually, everything on the menu is great. The service is attentive without being annoying. We will be back soon.
Great authentic Hungarian food by an excellent chef in a nIce atmosphere!
What a treat! The owners of Sunnyside Cafe SRQ have outdone themselves with this dinner only special restaurant. The care Tomas takes in the preparation of each meal is worthy of any big city restaurant. It's small, intimate, cozy. The special mangalica pork dish was so delicious as was the enormous rack of lamb. All of us enjoyed the entire meal. Don't miss the Hungarian crepes which are not like any crepes you've ever had, we could have eaten them as a meal. And finally the walnut cake, despite the fact that we were all full, was a perfect ending to a fantastic meal. My friends and I will be back.....soon.
We were very pleased with our entire experience. Solo violin was pleasant and not obtrusive. We shared the mussels with our friends and they were fresh with a tasty garlicky broth. There rack of lamb special was plentiful and perfectly prepared. Wife's seafood risotto was completely consumed which is unusual for her. One of our friends has a gluten problem and they were very accommodating. She had the black grouper and loved it. The final dish was a pork dish and based on comments also was excellent. We ordered the dumpling and crepe and they threw in a slice of cake. All very good. Corkage was $10 - very reasonable. They have only been open for two months so were not full. Prices were not cheap but a good value compared with other restaurants in Sarasota.
Eva warmly welcomed me and my friend. This was the first time at this restaurant...it is new to Gulf Gate...but there is a sister restaurant , Sunnyside that serves delicious breakfast and lunch on the other side of Sarasota. The space is intimate...about nine tables with white tablecloths and the full array of glassware and service. A live violinist played during our meal...charming.
The food is top quality. My friend and I both had the Mangalica pork tenderloin......not just any pork...special Hungarian breed that is especially delicious. This is a menu that is Continental in tone but there is something that most people will enjoy.
The service was attentive but not intrusive.
We loved it and will be back.🎉💕🥂
A pleasant surprise for a new restaurant. The food was exceptional and the service attentive and friendly. My wife and I were completely satisfied with our dinner (except for the calorie count). I would recommend Tokaj to anyone looking for a great dinner.
Fantastic food. Wonderful owners.
My wife and I visited Tokaj for the first time February 17th and loved our experience. The location was the former Solorzanos Italian Restaurant which we frequented often and decided, on a whim, to try Tokaj. We were not disappointed with the cuisine and most importantly the personal service which we were accustomed to with the owners of Solorzanos. I encourage all Sarasota area residents to try Tokaj. We promise you will not be disappointed.
Interesting mix of Hungarian and American plates. Would like to try their Sunday Hungarian specialties.
We tried Tokaj tonight on a whim, and are glad we did. Nice, intimate place... a low key and very good violinist on a Saturday night, and friendly, non-hurried service. But the food is the star here. We had the burrata with caramelized peaches and sun dried tomato jam: really nice. Then split a fresh, light and tasty kale salad, also just right. Entrees were a pistachio crusted Black grouper with a garlic and oil topped linguini, and the Tokaj pork tenderloin in a dill paprika sauce topped with fois gras, both very good. Roasted brussels sprouts with the tenderloin were super fresh. Compact wine list featuring three wines from Caymus, and a variety of Hungarian wines. Desserts looked great, but we were full. Next time, farmers cheese dumplings with dark chocolate is gonna happen. Recommend you give Tokaj a try!
This was our first time at this establishment, and we'll definitely go back again. The food was delicious, with large portion sizes, and both of. us were stuffed by the time we left. It's definitely a little gem when you're in Gulf Gate and looking for more high end dining.
