Tipsy Parson Ratings and Reviews
The hostess was welcoming to this very homey restaurant. Decorated similar to a parsonage might be, it is inviting. Our server was great. He was extremely accommodating. We were in the back room and although the play list was great , we wanted a little quieter when dining. No problem.
We started with hush puppies - excellent choice and followed it with fried chicken. The portions are beyond generous. The chicken was moist and good. We saw some salads coming out and they also looked very generous.
The piece de resistance is dessert. We shared the sorghum cake. My partner is from the south so sorghum is a kind of molasses sugar. The cake was delicious, like nothing that I’ve ever tasted. Sweet but not too, sort of molasses but not really just incredibly good.
Had a delightful family brunch on a rainy afternoon. Two of us arrived early and were seated in the (small) waiting area and served complimentary coffee while we waited for the others to arrive. In spite of it being a busy Saturday afternoon the waitstaff was attentive and professional throughout. The food was filling, tasty, and flavorful. Love the Biscuit Bomb and the grits! We were all quite happy.
Tipsy Parsons is one of those rare restaurants where you can keep coming back week after week, year after year to find that whomever greets you at the door, pours you a drink at the bar or serves your dinner, you are happy that you’ve Again returned for dinner. After twenty five years of living in nyc and spending so many nights in restaurants for business or pleasure, I have to say, I love Tipsy Parsons most.
I enjoy how the warm, people here actually care about what they do for a living. It’s rare.
I love the atmosphere at Tipsy Parson. The food is always wonderful and the service excellent. My only complaint from my last visit is that the noise level was beyond unbearable. We sat in the back room. It was full. We could hardly hear ourselves. We even had to repeat our meal orders because it was too loud for our server to hear. Wonderfully, as the evening waned and the back room emptied, the noise level became much more bearable.
Decent spot with southern influenced comfort food. They recently changed the menu, so be aware that the menus on their website [or Seamless or OpenTable, etc.] might not match the actual menu. We came for Chicken & Waffles, and alas they didn't have them.
The Biscuit Bomb dishes were great, definitely their pièce de résistance. The coffee was a little overpriced, at $5 a cup [with refills, granted...] So if you gulp down the coffee, you might have to flag your waiter/waitress often. Other than that, great place!
Warning to those with food allergies. Tipsy Parson has great ambiance and delicious food, but we were really disappointed when we went for dinner and the waiter and kitchen staff failed to heed our warning that we had a nut allergy at the table and served us a salad with walnuts mixed in throughout, despite the fact that we asked specifically for those nuts to be left out of the salad. Not seeing the nuts, my friend took one bite of his food and began having an allergic reaction. We notified the waiter, and he checked the ingredients of the meal and told us there were no nuts in the food and said, "I'm sorry you're not feeling well." Knowing that my friend was having an actual allergic reaction and not just that he was feeling unwell, we looked more closely at our salad and saw the nuts. We told the waiter and he took the salad off our bill, which was kind, but given the potential harm to my friend had he actually eaten any of the walnuts, I wish the waitstaff and kitchen had double checked the food before it was served to our table. Will not be returning.
While we have been here several times this was our first visit after a slight rearrangement of the entrance area - which works. The foos was great - the service attentive and given our theater tickets thoughtful - great wines by the glass
The only downer is when the back room has a large group forget about social conversation - indeed our next visit we will opt for the tables by the bar which we usually avoid because of the noise
The staff and management at Tipsy is stellar. One year ago my wife and I and 15 of our friends and family celebrated our wedding. One year later the people at Tipsy were falling over themselves to make our anniversary perfect. Any night of the week is superb st Tipsy. And they will go the extra mile if you let them there is any kind of special occasion. Their manager that night said to me “we take this stuff seriously” as she was giggling and handing us a free dessert. We will be spending every anniversary at Tipsy Parson. No doubt!
We had a great brunch here on Sunday. Only downside, we were sat in the adorable window which was great until the hostess stand area filled up with brunch goers hoping for a seat. My view of my husband and the window seat were great, my husbands view of the groups of people and nothing else? Not so great.
not sure if something was going on in the kitchen -but my friend and I both got the fried chicken and it was extremely salty and had a strong vinegar flavor. I like salty food but this was too much. the biscuit, while flavorful, was also extremely salty. slaw was just shredded cabbage with zero mayo, etc to make it actual cole slaw. For the price I expect better quality food.
Let me preface this review with the fact that my wife is a chef at a reputable NYC restaurant and I have the utmost respect and admiration for those who work in this industry. I have been to this restaurant many times and my experience was always great. However, that was not the case during this visit. It was a late brunch reservation (3:30), and I imagine the kitchen was trying to switch over for dinner service. That is the only reason I can think of for why the service and food were so poor. We tried to place an order for drinks and apps, and were told we needed to place the full order at the same time. So we did, repeated the app order, plus gave the entree order. Our entrees arrived about 15 minutes later, and the apps did not. We inquired, and the food runner had no clue. Then our server came to check on us (which typically means all the food has been delivered), and we inquired again. His response was "oh, you wanted those as apps?" I asked if they had even been fired (in the kitchen), and he said he would need to check. Which clearly means no. I said "if they aren't fired yet, we'll just cancel them" and he said he would take them off the check. As opposed to what? Leaving something on the check we never received? In addition, they ran out of iced coffee, the "poached egg" on the avocado toast was overdone (yet somehow slimy), and the scrambled eggs on the mushroom toast had clearly been sitting out for an extended period of time. Our empty plates went uncleared for over 15 minutes, even though we were 1 of 2 tables in the entire restaurant and they had 6-8 staff wandering around. In general, it was disappointing to say the least. There was absolutely no ownership or apology for anything. If you're going to take late brunch reservations, patrons should be provided the same level of service as the early birds.
A wonderful dinner with family in town visiting. Delicious entrees including fried chicken and Mac and cheese. The hush puppies and fried pickles are a must! Our waiter knew we had to leave for our concert and was efficient with our order! Can’t wait to go back!
